new exploration mechanics
new signal sources
personal codex
new voiced mission templates.

this will last a week,

iirc part 2 in a weeks time is more BGS stuff, then part 3 is mining improvments and part 4 is "new ships". each one is a week long.

looks interesting, thank you :)

NP ... it is not quite the update teased in 2017 with that amazing update to ice planets (look at this concept which the devs were actively aiming for... this has now been pushed back
https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteDangerous/comments/74w7tv/concept_art_of_a_srv_on_an_ice_world/

but that aside it is i think going to be a very impressive update all the same, with a whole new lighting system and night vision for the dark side of planets rather than what we have now.

actually destrucable asteroids that we can blow up when mining looks proper cool
i believe the video at the top is actually in engine.

Judging by the server problems the goto streamers were having last night, I think I will just let them do all the heavy work in showing the new stuff until well late into this 4 week beta test. Truthfully I probably won't even bother with it until it is released proper, I personally am happy for streamers/youtubers to show me the highlights. I do like the look of night vision on planets however.

So the last major patch has dropped...let the excitement bar go wooooooooooooooooooooooooo actualy maybe just woo..... I may just fire it up over the break to see the mining features. (exploration is just dull)

Certain aspects of the exploration changes are nice. And likewise with the mining changes. But it all feels seemingly a tad rushed and needlessly muddled TBH.

For me, at the moment, it's too little too late. So I'm holding out for ED4.0 (6-12 months away?) bringing in something significant such as atmospheric landings with some nice exploration gameplay/views/depth etc.

ps: I really really do not see 100+ people working on this as touted by FD.

Is the First Person Player control aspect in yet, or any time soon? ever?
You mean space legs? I wouldn't hold your breath - We're 4-5yrs in now, and I'd suggest this update is the first real signs of improving core gameplay in many many years. Indeed I'd have to look back to the addition of surface landings (three years ago) to point out my last addition of note.

Anyway, the latest update has at least raised the bar in what FD are introducing IMHO, albeit not a lot. My hope is next year will see the same ethos with some long overdue truly significant gameplay with real depth! (eg: really solid atmospheric landing exploration/gameplay)

Im the same not bothering or around 12 months

I have to say that I'm liking this update, plus with the new ship the Mamba!

Hoping this is the start of a good year for ED!
I played the beta a bit and I agree things are generally much more interesting. I think the UI needs some more work.... Stuff like when in combat mode navigatiomode controls should be totally masked and vice versa (really annoying pressing a button and it saying "wrong mode"
Still I think this will get better in time. I am looking forward to what the next paid expansion brings. Am dissapointed the improvements to ice planets didn't make it in from the reveal back in 2017

Well I ended up in the Iron Claw for using a hatch breaker on a destroyed Anaconda after being asked to scan an Onboard Data Beacon..... No I have no idea either. Anyway that gave me a 400c Bounty which I went to pay off in the station and was stuck in space Priiissssooon 32LY from where I was.... sort of breaks immersion.

Well seeing as the original was my most played game on my Amiga A1200 (along with Sensible Soccer) and after waiting for 4 years I finally picked this up on sale with the Horizons and Commander pack for £15. I've picked a T-Flight X Hotas from a mate and will go for a test flight over this weekend.

I come across a T-Flight X config which looks pretty useful for a first-timer like myself.

Are there any starter guides that people found particularly helpful or is it just a case of diving in and crashing a few ships. ;)
