*** The Official Elite: Dangerous Thread ***

Well seeing as the original was my most played game on my Amiga A1200 (along with Sensible Soccer) and after waiting for 4 years I finally picked this up on sale with the Horizons and Commander pack for £15. I've picked a T-Flight X Hotas from a mate and will go for a test flight over this weekend.

I come across a T-Flight X config which looks pretty useful for a first-timer like myself.

Are there any starter guides that people found particularly helpful or is it just a case of diving in and crashing a few ships. ;)
Do all the training missions which are on the start menu. Some are voiced as well.

As Bigmike says, do the training missions and keep doing them until you are comforble with your HOTAS set up. If you change your buttons to better suit your game play, always take a backup of the custom bindings file so that you can always have it available. Otherwise can be quite a pain having to redo them.

I have an original X52 and the only time I use the keyboard in flight is to use a couple of macros for docking and SCB/Heatsync combo. Otherwise it’s all HOTAS until nav any nave work or in station. I would not be able to play the game without it and it really does make it fun.

I bought it on steam for £9, I loaded up the game, created an account, but it wouldn’t not activate, I entered the code to verify but nothing happens.

Steam says i have played for 48min, so I have spent 48min typing codes into a stupid box to get the game to work, refund request pending, I was looking forward to this

Don't give up I seem to remember being in the same boat when I first got this as beta backer. Try a quick google as there's something silly going on.

Many thanks to you both. I will heed your advice. I've downloaded VoiceAttack which I suspect I will use for non critical things like landing gears etc.
The last time I played Elite I ended up not going to my first ever job in the Civil Service - I shall be a bit more restrained now. ;)

Lol
Voice attack is brilliant
I use for
landing gear
Deploy heat sink
Shield cell
Chaff
Target next route system
Next target
Select next/previous weapons group
Engage hyperdrive
System/galaxy map

And a bunch more.
The Voice packs on sale are amazing and work with voice attack however I use a freebie one (https://www.alpha-orbital.com/kics). Not necessary but great for immersion.

I also think some of the 3rd party tool like EDDiscovery is great to have running whilst you play. I am not 100% sure if needed now since the new update however

One mini tip if you are literally just starting, chopping and changing FITTINGS on your ship costs you nothing, by that I mean you can sell something like a pulse laser, and buy it back for the same price as you sold it. I.e. there is no credit loss on selling fittings, like some kind of tax or something. It means you can strip your ship, try a new loadout, and if that doesn't work out, you can sell it all and buy back the original fittings with no net credit loss. You obviously would need the credits up front to buy the alternative gear though of course, if it is higher class stuff.

Later on when you start to engineer fittings to improve them, you will be more wary about selling stuff and instead will probably want to put engineered fittings in storage, but by then you will have enough credits to not be bothered about buying new fittings without flogging the old ones. But at the start of the game there is no need to be wary of trying a new loadout to see if the style appeals. Chopping and changing actual ship hulls however does incur a net 10% loss of the cost of the ship being sold, which you don't ever get back if you change your mind and want to go back to your old ship, so bare that in mind.

above is good advice... also IF you ever do decide you want to sell a ship hull (personally i never do i still have all my ships :) ) but if you strip it down to the absolute bare bones before selling up, you will lose the least amount of cash (because of what Martin said above, you get full wack back for modules BUT if you sell the whole ship in 1 go you will losr 10% off everything.

ohh and if you want to buy expensive stuff, try to buy from Li Yong-Rui systems.

(Ray Gateway at Diaguandri is one of my favourite places) as you get 15% off all ships and fittings there, and they have a good selection. There is also a black hole in this system if you want to see one)

Just aquired a T-Flight HOTAS X - going to try the key bindings provided above and actually try and complete the combat tutorial now.

I haven't been back to Elite for months but having played the heck out of X4: Foundations I get a strong hankering to go again.

The flight model is just sublime plus playing in VR is another level.

Just started again myself as I think I got a bit miffed that Horizons was a paid upgrade when it was released as the vanilla game was still quite empty. Deleted my player account too with several million credits and fully upgraded ships so I'm back to 1000 CR but I can see quite a few changes even to the base game. Plus I bought Horizons for cheap about a year previous but never tried it.

Going to get back on feet and will try the VR too for a few fights.

Yeah I have an account, I made it when I tried to get it to work. My refund went through, I bought Contractors VR instead. I’ll have a look at ED next time it goes on sale

Just bought this, I don't have a HOTAS but do have an Xbox controller, guessing it would be earlier to use my controller for now over M&KB?

Edit: Also, do I want to launch Horizons or the normal game?

Edit2: How do I get past this "Email Addresses do not match" when making an account?

Edit3: Made an account on frontier store first and it's all sorted now.

Launcher Horizons, no reason to launch the base game once you've got the addon content.

Yeah seemed to bet the default on the launcher, spent 2 hours trying to figure out where to buy a passenger cabins from, until I realised they are class 2 mods, (think that terminology is wrong).
So much to learn, flying with a Xbox controller isn't too bad either.

Stick with it. Even some of the experienced players are having "fun" with the new UI in the latest update. Stick with it tho and I can't stress enough how good this game is in VR if you ever had a fancy to check out the oculus rift

One of the main reasons I've picked it up is for VR in the future, me and my girlfriend were talking about getting VR when we move next year and this is right up there on the list.

I see the UI is new from the guides I've been watching but doesn't look too hard to get used to!

Complete noob here myself. Can someone explain the difference in Black/Blue/Red/Green text on this setup? it seems to be saying as per Fig 2. that it needs to be both secondary fire & UI Back etc however when i set it up as UI back it tells me warning "JOY2 is already bound to Secondary Fire" - I assume this has something to do with the fact i dont know how to setup the different flight modes as per Fig 5, 6 & 7 Is there a video tutorial on how to configure this setup? Finding it very intimidating at the moment.

It's a shift/combo system. So the black text is the standard operation, the colours then relate to the shift you hold and press at the same time. So, hold 5 (blue) and 1 to boost instead of 1 on it's own being primary fire.

This layout is pretty much the one I have, although looks slightly updated.

3rd post on this page contains a download config file for almost this setup, it is however old so will be missing some binds. If @MartinPrince has a bind file he could share I would also appreciate it :) as then I can get reset to jump back in again!

Ah I’m with you now thanks man. A lot like my old world of Warcraft binds then, e.g:

D = ability 1
Shift +D = ability 2
Alt + D = ability 3

Same concept but with the joystick controls, got it.
