*** The Official Elite: Dangerous Thread ***

Well, I've just spent 3 hours trying to get back into this, seeing as I have a lifetime pass and Odyssey looks interesting.....but it's still so wilfully inaccessible, and doesn't respect your time at all.

It's baffling how they've made the interface so horrible to use....I spent the best part of an hour trying to get my HOTAS setup in a usable state, and never really achieved it. Died a few times unexpectedly trying to do simple missions.

Gave up with that and started doing passenger runs. Did a 20-jump trip with a tourist then I discover there's yet another deliberately inaccessible UI to learn how to use. Presumably this FSSS was farmed out to an outsourcer which would explain the baffling control setup.

Can't be arsed with it any more, no doubt my schlep across galaxy will be a waste of time now the mission will expire before I get a chance to spend a few more hours reading user manuals.

If the alpha was anything to go by then it's all about to get worse too.

I played a lot in beta and thought it would be reasonably easy to get back into it, but I'm amazed at the mess they've made. Just obstacle after obstacle between you and doing anything remotely interesting. Mostly the use interface to be fair but also the systems that have been shoehorned in so badly.

if I ever lost my config file I think that would be it for me, takes so long to set it up and then to relearn everything after a long break. But if you can be bothered to do it, go through tutorials and relearn, I find it works just fine. Maybe the issue is that the game gets more complex with every update which makes returning to the game more of a challenge.
What areas in particular are you finding a pain?

Yeh the controls setup is a pain in the rear. I've had the game remove all of my config a few times now, so I won't even bother trying to setup the HOTAS now. Last time I played I just used the default Xbox controller profile to fly about with some mates for a bit.

The new Odyssey content looks unappealing too, not seen any really positive comments about it yet. So think I'll stick with Elite being a casual fly around with mates every now and then and stick with Star Citizen for when I want something more indepth.

Ohh the Elite UI....its special and the fact its been butchered so console players can use a keypad is joke. Switching to mining mode etc etc.

Not sure if you knew but the config file for bindings can be found:
C:\Users\XXXX\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Bindings

I always have a copy stored so I can drop it in when I reload it. If the bindings have changed file name, let's say from 3 to 4. I just rename the one I have and that seems to work, then make any adjustment to the new controls where necessary. Like you, I have been burned to many times with Key/HOTAS bindings.

I've got most stuff setup on my HOTAS but it's still not 'right'...I'm sure I had a good config back in beta where I could fly well. I'd love to see how they've managed to get a joypad to work, might have to try it.

Will give it another bash today. Got a busted knee at the moment giving my grief so my patience levels are minimal. Will watch some videos on the FSSS...although I was trying it yesterday and the controls didn't seem to work.

I just wish the UI gave useful feedback. I picked up a tourist missions, it said 'take X to ILD-1044 Fumarole, Epic Mountain Range, and Battle Of Whatsit'. ILD-1044 isn't too far, nice, I'll crack on with this. So I head over there, find the fumarole, spend 15-20 mins googling to figure out if I have managed to complete that first 'visit' or not because there's no feedback on the mission tracking.....then I realise, contrary to the wording on the mission, that each of the different POIs is in a different system, not all in ILD-1044 as the description suggests....and I had a 150LY trip to make to the next one.....then I ran out of time for the evening.

I wish someone would make a decent space sim that wasn't as player-hostile as ED, as much of a joke as SC, or janky as X. I'd love something like Freelancer again...

I reckon SC will get there in time. It's obviously very much unfinished, but there's a huge amount of gameplay potential underneath. If you ignore the negative comments along the lines of "oh look, they're adding more expensive ships to buy with real money" and instead follow the dev blogs there's nice progress being made. Sadly going to be a while before it's a fully complete game.
Agreed with the frustrations of the missions in Elite, so vague what you need to do on some of them!

I think once I've read the scanning manual, doing passenger missions and scanning everything for exploration will keep me occupied for a while.

I just want something chill to play rather than Apex Legends.....need to get over the hump with ED.

Is Odyssey still not going to support VR?

Odyssey will not support VR on foot but they are working on it ,so rumour has it.

If you watch some of the YT streamers (like D2EA) that have been live testing the Odyssey Alpha, they have a fair amount of information direct from FDev, as DD has said, It will support VR in all the same aspects as Horrizons and the developers are working towards making Space Legs VR too but its a way off yet.

The odyssey alpha had lots of issue where the universal back button just failed to work so stuff had to interfaced with using mouse input rather than simply using assignments setup on my HOTAS, similarly some UI panels opened with a base selection, others did not, there was just a complete lack of continuity about it all because it's clear that stuff has been shoehorned in without any regard to making it act the same way as the current UI does and that's without going into the complete mess that on foot controls are.

I'd rather stick needles in my eyes than watch youtubers, so thanks for the summary! :)

I did eventually manage to finish my passenger trip, had a couple of mil by the end of it, so upgraded to a dolphin. Slowly getting back into it.

Remembering how good the beta was in my DK2 has got me wanting to order a Quest 2 now though....

Yep I am interested to check it out as I wasnt in the Alpha, although I appreciate it is still a work in progress but we have waited so long for this.

servers will be rammed?

Launch day bugs I expect, plus server load etc.

I didn't get to play the alpha, and while I kept tabs on it so I know what to expect, I didn't watch any full mission playthroughs or anything as I wanted it to be a bit fresh. I won't get off work until late anyway, so hoping that everything is live and ready to play by the time I get my daughter to bed.
