*** The Official Elite: Dangerous Thread ***

Launch day bugs I expect, plus server load etc.

I didn't get to play the alpha, and while I kept tabs on it so I know what to expect, I didn't watch any full mission playthroughs or anything as I wanted it to be a bit fresh. I won't get off work until late anyway, so hoping that everything is live and ready to play by the time I get my daughter to bed.
There in competition with star citizen who is releasing a new patch and event plus free fly from friday.

Hope they aint sharing the same AWS servers lol

Everyone ready to stretch their space legs tomorrow? I personally can't wait.

Looking forward to giving it a try. However I've played the alpha and the performance was terrible. I was consistently getting around 50-75% of the frame rate I normally get in space/planets and on foot around 20-30 FPS which basically made it unplayable.

It's going to need to improve by orders of magnitude to make the game playable on anything short of the latest high-end GPUs IMO. That's particularly an issue at the moment since it's not like you can just order a new video card! Not at RRP at least!

I kind of gave up on the alpha early on because of this. Did the performance improve towards the end of it?

No it didn't, though it was an old branch without much in the way of optimisations from what FD said, we shall see tomorrow evening hopefully.

Without wading through the numerous posts at the official forum, can anyone confirm regarding the gameplay aspects of Odyssey in particular respect to:
1. Combat - Are you fighting in PvP or PvE, if the former are there going to be rebuys if your ship etc. get damaged and if the latter is it pre-scripted locations and enemies or radiant style encounters wherever you land.
2. Exploration - Is Odyssey purely within the Bubble and other inhabited areas or can you explore out to the rim or up to Beagle Point and still get planetside?
3. Combat (again) - Are the mechanics similar to any other FPS or RPG we can relate to, e.g. Mass Effect or the Fallout games.

Okay, performance has improved but nowhere near enough and it's still full of bugs and inconsistencies lol, to top it off the new hyperspace sequence in VR is very nausea inducing now, that could be a combo with the broken UI elements and a migraine hangover from a few days back though so I'll hold proper judgement for a while.

Just been reading the reviews on Steam - Very Positive so far albeit with few reviews the haters seem to be Star Citizen fans.

I've always been equally amused and bemused by the negative reviews from people with thousands of hours in the game lol, I mean don't get me wrong I'll moan about it to anybody who'll listen but I do tend to highlight the amount of hours I've played as some context :)

Be wary of the Steam reviews, they were at 80% positive long before the actual servers went live. Not dodgy at all. Watching Exigeous' stream it's quite obvious that what they've released is nothing more than a beta. He's ripping into it right now.

There needs to be a significant jump in performance for the system spec requirements to be anything other than outright lies lol :)

Just been playing it on my geforce 1060 and safe to say the system requirements are literally outright lies

Unless you consider 20fps in the on foot sections acceptable. It dropped to under 8fps when there was fire on screen in the tutorial mission!

That's running at 1080p low! Horizons ran fine at 1440p/high! This is barely any better then the alpha :(

How do you install Odyssey on steam if you were a beta/alpha backer back in the day? Presumably you get this for free?

E: it shows up on my list on the Elite launcher but its greyed out and the install button is dark....
Ive tried unlinking and relinking my account, still doesnt work :|

If you were premium beta or earlier then it should be linked to you account, launch Normal from steam and it shows up in the launcher.
Weird bug for me in the launcher install was greyed out but pressing enter set it downloading.
Took a long time though it just finished and i have meetings in the morning so im not going to get to play tonight.
