*** The Official Elite: Dangerous Thread ***

From what I read if you need Engineering materials then I would top up at the crystal forests before they are gone. They don't exist in Odyssey so high end elementals will be harder to get.

I haven't used up the ones a gathered before Odysseys release, Once it came out it ran like garbage in VR and I've been holding off till I upgrade.

It is hard to be sure about this since the communication from FDev so far seems all over the place, but according to Obsidian Ant, the option to launch the current Horizons 3.8 version will be on the launcher, as well as 4.0 Horizons, and 4.0 Odyssey, with the 3.8 being what we have now, and the 4.0 being the graphics "upgrade" and Scorpion SRV. Ant seems to think that this means there will always be an option to launch 3.8 whenever you want, so for material gathering sessions and seeing what planets should look like really etc.

I've not read anywhere about things like what happens if you log out in a Scorpion in 4.0 an log back in in 3.8, but I imagine it will either just prevent you logging in or will kick you into space, but I imagine the main reason FDev have allowed access to the Scorpion in Horizons 4.0 is for them to build in a reason to make you switch permanently, if it is a choice of having a Scorp and only using 4.0, or forgetting about to Scorp in order to use 3.8. That would be what I would do if I wanted to discretely pressure users to conform with the grand plan which is no doubt to eventually get rid of 3.8, because even if the code base is frozen, they will still have to patch it for exploits etc, as they currently do.

damn i need to install ED:H again, not because i am bothered on the materials, but i have not got around to seeing those yet in game

i will google if not but does anyone have the location to hand of what would be the most visually impressive one to visit? thansk.

Calling them Crystal Forests makes them sound impressive, like actual crystal tree's soaring miles into the sky, but in reality they are just a patch of angular spikes sticking out of the ground with small crystal "twigs" you shoot off the collect materials. There is nothing graphicly impressive about them to be honest, so don't get your hopes up. The barnacle forests are more impressive to be honest, and even those are just small patches of rocks and a few actual barnacles.

The things that you will really miss when Horizons does finally go are more to do with the planet gen itself, e.g. those one off planets with miles deep canyons have bitten the dust for a start, stuff like that. Everything just looks the same with Odyssey planets it seems to me, in terms of the surface relief.

I know..... whilst i have not gone back to ED:H since O released, the lack of giant canyons and huge mountains i do miss.... also there wasnt a tiling issue in EDH (or not one i noticed) and indeed FD trumpeted the stellar forge because it generated the surfaces fully procedurally.... where as, whilst i have not seen any quite as bad as some of the poster children for where it goes wrong..... i have noticed repetition where i didnt before.

I dont want to hate on Elite D, i have had many many hrs of enjoyment in it but since around half way through the horizons season (before beyond) it feels to me (as a none coder) like FD have really put in minimal dev time and effort, or possibly kept their B team on it, whilst they chased new IP...... its not a bad game at all, but compared the the early development diaries and the design descisions done early doors, it really is a shadow of the game it could have been :/

(and them backing away from VR is so so dissapointing for me as a 100% VR player)

How does this run on the Steam Deck?
i havent tried it but if you are going to dont even bother with ED:O or ED:H 4.0....... stick with Horizons 3.8 (which until 9th of august is just Elite Dangerous Horizons....... it is on the 9th that the merging process starts to try to get everyone on the new build)

but ED:O has FAR higher min spec than ED:H

From what I have seen the current Horizons version graphically runs pretty good. Odyssey version will run slower due to it being graphically more intense. But the main thing will be what the controls are like on something like a Streamdeck. I would imagine it will be a fair bit better that on console since the deck has a lot more inputs, but it won't be a HOTAS type deal that's for sure. As always youtube will probably show up someone putting it through its paces in Elite.

I would probably play it on the sofa with a PS4 controller to a TV...I could mix it with a keyboard and mouse?

I suppose then in theory you could get a HOTAS setup with that scenario, I'm guess all USB peripherals will work with the deck if you get a hub, and if you find the game to your tastes and want to play it to its full extent in that way, but yeah there are players that swear by KB+M, though I have never mastered it as once you get used to a stick it is hard to transition to anything else with this game I find.

Elite Dangerous contols are fantastically agnostic, and you can mix and match.

For instance, i use HOTAS or HOSAS for my ship, i use xbox pad for the SRV (the buggy) and on foot stuff and a combination of pad and KB/M for the UI

(HOTAS = Throttle and stick - HOSAS - twin sticks......... in my trying to be lazy i ended up typing more )

you can play the whole game on a pad (like on console) or you can go old school and KB/M and indeed it has its very own control method geared for that.. i believe some of the top PvP players use it like that.

I am actual a HOSAKB :) Right hand on stick for and left hand on keyboard. Ain't nobody no how ever parting me from my MS FF2 joystick! So with the limited buttons on the stick and inconvenient throttle, I use the KB for throttle and pretty much everything else bar pointing my ship and firing/targeting. That plus a joypad for SRV as yourself.

for years i used an X55 throttle and stick... then the throttle failed so i bought an X56 throttle and stick (both great controls, utterly rubbishly put together, dunno if newer revisions improve things.) my old X55 stick gathered dust

but i read about people using twin sticks and i thought conceptually it seemed a good fit.... i must day it is great fun.... personally i am not very good with that method, but i tend to default to it now just for fun, with flight assist off and in VR, i just forget i am playing a game..

with flight assist on and using the HOTAS that i have 1000s of hrs in, the game is so easy it almost plays ittself but twin stick FA off i am continually engaged and feel like i am actually controlling a ship. (works better with big ships, little ones are too flighty)

i only wish my left stick was a different one as it is a right handed joystick and so not really comfortable in my left.

the thing you need to remember if you make a wacky combo control set up, is they all have to be turned on when you load the game, otherwise it wont load your controller profile... so even if you dont need your pad and it is turned off, none of your other stuff will work until you turn on the pad. once you have done this it will make your custom profile available. once loaded it is ok if your pad turns off

Probably too premature to ask since I haven't even looked into how well it run on the Deck as yet...but i will anyway!

What is the recommended stick to use? Say, £150 ish? Is that enough?

What's a prefer pad? Xbox SX, PS4, PS5 or Nintendo Pro Controller? I have access to all of them.

IF build quality has improved then check out the logitech X56 HOTAS (i may be out of date and there could be a new one)..... when it works its a very good throttle and stick for elite with lots of buttons - its often more than £150 but i got on offer.. cant remember exactly but i want to say between £100 and £150

the problem is was a massive design issue in the wiring loom that constant movement in the throttle caused the wires to tire and ultimately break, thus causing throttle issues.

if you get confirmation it has been fixed - logitech were looking into it after buying madkatz but as of 12 months after the buyout they were still using the shonky design (mine has it) maybe the RGB revision fixes it i dunno, you will have to look.

IF you cant get confirmation that this has been fixed then i would look at ThrustMaster T.16000M HOTAS (used to be £99 but seems to have gone up) its the official Elite dangerous HOTAS (iirc there was even a special edition elite one)

or even go ultra cheap - been as low as £40 T.Flight Hotas 4

pad wise use what ever you prefer, if pc supports it Elite supports it, so go with what has most buttons - not tried it but ps4/5 may be a good shout as it has the track pad on it for even more controls on the pad. i use xbox 1 pad

Stickwise you want will preferably want one with a twist axis for YAW control, otherwise you would also have to get separate rudder pedals. Elite is the same as Flight Simulator, in that if you get into it you can easily throw money at it getting controllers, and VR, before you come to your senses :)
