*** The Official Elite: Dangerous Thread ***

Maybe in the future they will allow actual base building to establish a meagre outpost far away from the bubble, then have this colonisation to nearby stars with the gal map blue line from that, and maybe this current blue line only colonisation is just them testing that. I imagine that establishing a base out on the sticks would have to be a mammoth undertaking to stop random bases popping up everywhere overnight. Anyway, I know this almost certainly is not what they will implement, but it would be what I'd do with the game. As it stands, gradually extending from the bubble only seems to be a bit of a waste of time.

My biggest issue is the ground content isn't in full VR. After only ever playing the game fully immersed in VR it's a shame you can't experience that on foot.

it's true. I barely touch the on foot stuff due to not being in VR.

at least modern headsets are good enough quality so that it's ok playing the none VR.stuff in the headset

What headset are you using for VR? I tried it on Quest 3 and it looked terrible, like a PS2 game.
really? that sounds like a setting issue.
I currently play using a meta quest pro however I have put hrs into elite using a rift DK2, rift CV1, reverb G2,.quest 2 and now the pro
the pro and reverb G2 were definitely the best but none were terrible imo (ok admittedly I would not choose to go back to the DK2)

Hm maybe. It was a very brief test. I assumed everything would be maxed out as per the normal game.

vr has it's own settings, and you do need a strong set up for vr ultra (for instance I have an RTX 3090 and iirc I lower some of the settings from vr ultra. again iirc to run everything on vr ultra in all cases you are probably looking at needing a 4080 aor maybe a heavily over clocked 3090ti if you want to run at the quest 3 native resolution without needing space warp.

whilst tweaking settings make sure you are running wired not wireless and that your actual vr settings using the quest cable are appropriate for your pc and you are not trying to force too high a bit rate through the cable or are super sampling.

(I think it's oculus traytool to fiddle with those but best Google)

do your other pcvr games run ok (this will help rule out whether it's an elite game setting or a quest pcvr setting causing you issues)

You'll likely need to check the HMD Image Quality settings as a first point of call, it defaults to something terrible and looks awful IIRC. I use my Q3 and it looks great other than the poor black levels in comparison to the OG Rift, though more than makes up for it in resolution and then some.

The horrible shimmering etc was because AMD FSR was enabled. Turned it off and voila.

Still can't work out how to view FPS in any game yet but one step at a time lol.

Seriously considering a return to ED. Like many, I'm an aging Commander - I bought in to the Premium Beta Kickstarter back in 2014, and over a few years I amassed about 6 billion credits, a fleet of pretty much every ship maxed to the nines for different roles, triple Elite status, former Buckyball champion (from one of the very early rounds in Beta bubble), etc etc ad nauseum.

When I stopped playing, I had just reached Beagle Point on the second Distant Worlds expedition. I think I logged in once or twice and made it a few thousand light years back towards home, but never bothered with Fleet Carriers or Powerplay 1.0.

I've still got my Saitek X52 Pros gathering dust with their desk mounts somewhere under my desk. With everything that's been added lately and renewed interest in the game, now seems like a good time - any advice?

My advice would be to do it!
The game is massive and the new update has added a lot in terms of the new PP2.0. Colonisation is slated for 2025 also. I'd recommend getting into a squadron. I can send you the discord link to one I'm in. They will wing up with you and credits will flow. Plus there is a pretty healthy discord server with it with all the BGS reporting if you're into that. Let me know if you want any further info.

You've got my interest... I've never joined a squadron in the past so actually playing with other people will be interesting! Ping me a DM :)

I'd like to join a squad, but my play time is at best erratic. Is there a way that a squad can set a longer term objective and complete in your own time and then meet up periodically to do the bits only the squad can do?

I couldn't get on with PP1, but never say never and thought a squad cold exploit that?

I might try and get back into Elite if its still going and active (haven't booted it up for ages).

I played it for a couple months a long time ago just as I first started getting into VR. My system wasn't really good enough to drive VR though at the time. Now it is, but I would need to start from scratch and relearn the game completely.

From what I've read (and experienced), VR in Elite is more of an 'experience' thing rather than a solid play. Combat and light flying around yeah, but reading panels is harder, navigating the galaxy map, so on can be a bit more finnicky. Personally I've only ever briefly tried it with the Quest 1 about 5 years ago so can't really say what it's like today, YMMV.
