*** The Official Elite: Dangerous Thread ***

Every time I get that Elite itch it takes me so long to relearn everything that I stop waay too early.

In VR it's lovely but Roalith says the galaxy map is a complete mare.

I did enjoy using VoiceAttack to spice it all up. Loved just saying landing and the pads extend or retract.

I find the galaxy map in elite works just fine in VR if set up correctly . I tend to use an Xbox pad for the map but I have a profile which works well which uses my hotas as well as my hosas.

From what I've read (and experienced), VR in Elite is more of an 'experience' thing rather than a solid play. Combat and light flying around yeah, but reading panels is harder, navigating the galaxy map, so on can be a bit more finnicky. Personally I've only ever briefly tried it with the Quest 1 about 5 years ago so can't really say what it's like today, YMMV.
I think it is wrong to judge elites panels etc on such an old headset. on a reverb G2 or a quest 2, quest 3 or quest pro it's absolutely fine imo.
elite has its faults in VR for sure but my 3000+ hrs all in VR says it works just fine :)

Couldn't be more wrong. As long as you don't care about the silly on-foot stuff, VR in Elite is so good it'll mean you can never play pancake mode again.

Agree with what others are saying here, once setup correctly Elite in VR is the only way to play it which is a massive shame as FD just don't care about VR anymore. I haven't touched pancake mode Elite since getting my OG Rift and sure, the text was difficult to read with the default orange UI but swapping it to green made it perfectly readable, modern headsets are so much better there is no issue whatsoever. I live in hope that FD backtrack and start pushing VR as a feature again rather than leaving it to rot.

In what sense has VR been left to rot in Elite? Is it buggy? It seemed to work fine when I last played it.

Well, like I said - YMMV! Now if someone wants to buy me a Q3 I'd be more than willing to try again :D
indeed ,.my point was just be clear when telling people about it the issue is with your headset not the game (in this instance)
(for example I wouldn't complain about elite having blurry low resolution visuals if I was using a 14 inch 640x480 CRT from 1994 :D

we get what we get but when issues are found in VR they take for ever to be fixed (has the mining scanner been fixed in VR yet? and the Full Spectrum System Scanner has never rendered fully in VR (it's usable and I only realised parts were missing when watching a friend play on a screen)
also bugs like the hud only rendering in 1 eye and other random visual artefacts took a long time to fix..
Elite in VR is sublime where it is supported and works but FD (sadly) put absolute minimal time in supporting it - which don't get me wrong is infinitely better than their initial plan for Oddy. the only reason the game has any VR support once they moved over to the facelifted engine (that happened with the Oddy release) is because of a significant backlash from the VR user base. the initial plan was to drop VR.completelt.

Not to mention seizure inducing flickering shadows that have been an issue for several years now and yes, I'm aware of the supposed fix by turning them to a lower setting only a) I don't want to when I have the power to run them higher and b) they still flicker. VR is an absolutely minimum viable product in elite these days sadly.

I only had a 1st gen WMR headset so resolution etc was low compared to modern headsets and my gpu wasn't really up to it but even so the experience of sitting in the ship cockpits in VR was amazing. It was interesting that some ships were better in VR than pancake and others worse. The Sidewinder was fantastic. I never liked the cobra but in VR it was much better whereas the FDS, which was one of my favourite ships for a while, wasn't so good in VR.

I just found that the hassle of putting the headset on and the discomfort meant that I just couldn't be bothered after a while. I would just start in pancake instead just because it was so much quicker and easier.

From what I understand the modern headsets are lighter as well as higher definition etc. Unfortunately my gpu couldn't cope and I couldn't justify the cost.

Best thing about modern headsets like the Quest Pro and Q3 is you can use them without a facial interface, (needs a Halo strap on the Q3) which makes them way more comfortable for long sessions.

I much prefer using my Pro like that. It's incredible for Elite, as it's so sharp.
