*** The Official Elite: Dangerous Thread ***

I play using a HOSAS. (it wasn't planned my x55 throttle wiring broke due to prolonged use , then my x56 I accidentally snapped the throttle climbing out of my flight seat! .. I have glued it but don't trust it is strong enough for the heavy duty work out elite gives it.

it's brilliant fun flying with 2 sticks , tho the x55 /6 would not be my 1st choice for a left handed stick as it is modelled very definitely for righties.

if you already have 1 stick you could also buy a really cheap stick for your left hand. I don't think I would go back to a throttle in elite now even if I could, HOSAS is the way to go imo (for fun...... arguably the massive flight assist you get with mouse means is still more effective but personally effectiveness does not come into it for me)

I can't unfortunately, because I started off with verpil alpha primes and warbrd-d bases, so I know how good they were and I don't think I'd like anything else because I started off at the high end.
I mean it's kind of a nice problem to have in a way but also it's annoying. Also, when I thought about how I played elite dangerous, I do wonder if I wouldn't enjoy having a throttle over a second stick, but that's just me getting lured by the shiny buttons .
I don't really recall making huge use of the lateral thrusters to be honest.

I use a PS4 controller, and I do miss the lateral thrusters for combat (not enough binds free to have vert/lat/roll/yaw all enabled, and I use laterals the least). It's still playable for sure, but I think I'd be a much better pilot if I had them available.

I have lateral thrust as my "alternative flight controls" for when I'm landing. Sadly, those keybinds map to my weapons in the standard flight controls, which led to my own fleet carrier obliterating me one time when I tried to use them without putting my landing gear down, and opened fire on my FC at point blank range

don't forget one of elites strengths is it huge flexibility on control binding. you can mix and match up to 4 controllers at the same time.

I use 3, 2 flight sticks combined with an Xbox 360 pad. if you wanted you could use for instance racing pedals (or proper flight SIM pedals) or even 2 controls pads together

also don't forget voice attack. I use that as well along with my 3 controllers. I use it for immersion but can really help with those use rarely controls that you will forget what they are in the heat of the moment.

I did my 1st ever titan attack last night. it is fair to say frontier do not get everything right with elite but what they do get right they nail

it's atmospheric, nervy, engaging and pays well....and on top of that the bonus rewards on this one defending earth is insane. (iirc it's 7 fully upgraded SCO drives).

and no engineering needed all the stuff is for sale at a rescue ship (tho I won't lie .. a thermal vent laser is a bonus)

but with a free copy on prime gaming there has never been a better time to get into elite.

I re-installed this a day or so ago. Still around the Bubble with a wedge of cash and a few ships for trading and basic combat missions. I have no idea on what I should be doing now. All seems too much compared to a few years ago. Ill log back in later today and post where I am and what situation I am in. Hopefully some one will offer some idea on what I should be doing.

"should be" doing? i thought the whole point of Elite games were they were open and you could do what you wanted? Have they changed that?
you are right, I probably worded it wrong, I think was meant to say, what can I do these days? There seems to be so much going on now I am lost. A bit like WoW, far too much to do thats why I dont play it now. Regarding ED, I feel left behind in a way. So many factions to get rep with, upgrading ships with super modules that are a grind. I have no idea where to begin with that stuff.

the grind has pretty much gone in elite now.

right now the big thing going on is a thargoid titan has orbited earth and so there is a community goal to destroy it. there are loads of guides on how to do this on YouTube. you can get all the specific gear you need for cheap from a rescue ship in the neighbouring systems.

a krait is a good affordable ship to do it in but loads can be built to do it.

the only thing you could benefit from getting engineered would be a heat vent beam laser as cool running makes life far simpler.

to be clear tho this is still some of the more complex gameplay in elite right now as you have to doge mines, be stealthy to not be seen and survive through a caustic storm. if you register ANY damage to the titan however it comes with huge rewards . 7 fully engineered SCO jump drives.

I am doing my 1st titan attack this time and so far it's a mixed bag. 1st run I didn't have enough caustic protection and got destroyed

2nd run I located the titan but could not get the thing to emergency vent so escaped with my ship but no progress.

3rd run went peachy attacked the titan AND escaped

and my 4th run just i got greedy and whilst I got plenty of damage on the titan I got blown up.

The grind has gone? What so i don't need to engineer anymore?
a lot of the stuff is on sale for credits . engineering is still a thing but the rewards given for playing the game are vastly inflated and the materials trader means if you are short of something you can swap stuff for it .
I mean there is still some progression but just playing the game earns plenty. personally I don't want the game to go full sandbox.

I just had a couple of successful runs. am now in the top 75% in the CG which will hopefully make sure I get the ship kit as well as the FSDs. mind you I hope to have a few more runs at it maybe tomorrow morning. it's enjoyable I am kicking myself for not doing this on the other titans. I hope one way or another this continues in the game after this titan drops.

so far I have lost 2 ships which has cost me 9 million but that has been covered by the pilots federation vouchers.

btw any player happen to be here who I was with in mobius who saw me foolishly boost into the "pineapple" vent and get stuck. I accidentally hit boost when shooting at it DOH!

your best bet is look at one of the many YouTube guides but the gear you need is for sale at the rescue ship hutner near to Sol (it's on the galaxy map as a green icon)
I have just arrived and docked there. Not logged in right now as it kids tea time. What am I looking for? is it expensive? Only got 250m credits. do I need a specfic ship?

I use a fer de.lance however I believe a krait is a good choice . basically the faster the better but you don't want it to run too hot either. ideally could do with it being able to boost around 500 so you can out run thargoids. this may need need engineering however. I have read some using totally stock a rated ships however
250mil should be more than enough. (but be prepared for a rebuy)
do use a guide as if you blindly wing it it will go wrong. you need to pad out your optional internals with module and hull reinforcements and don't use a shield.

thanks. Ill do a little diving into some research.

I did it on my third run, using the Cmdr Mechan core version of the Krait Mk II. First run got the timing wrong on the pulse and used up all the caustic sinks before getting to the Titan, had a go anyway but was attacked, got back to the rescue ship with 6% hull. Second run got three vents done and went below to shot the thermal core, and it retracted just as I lined up, then got attacked so had to abort. Third time got 5 f the vents and was enough to do it. So sounds almost exactly like you.

Found the Krait really quite sluggish for all this manoeuvring though so was a bit of a chore and the clart you would have to do beforehand to gather materials to synthesise caustic sinks makes this a one and done thing for me. This was only the second thargoid related thing I have done since they came back, the other was that goal to kill just one scout to get some racks or something. Prior to this all the thargoid stuff just involved too much messing about unlocking and gathering things for me. I certainly wouldn't have bothered doing it if they hadn't removed to need to grind anything for the modules, but it is still hampered by the stuff you need to synthesis sinks.

My guess with all this once this goid is destroyed is that they will open up a previously locked area of space to be a permanent thargoid combat zone, cos otherwise what are they going to do with all these assets they have created?

This is the video guide you want by they way for anyone interested.

don't forget you can equip multiple caustic sinks. they do not ramp up simultaneously. I have 4 and when eventually all 4 fill up it's 1 button press to eject all of them.

my build is far from ideal it's just stuff i cobbled together. it's fast but runs too hot. IF titan gameplay carries on in some form I will spec it better for next time.
