***The Official Forza Motorsport 3 Thread***

I dont know which picture to have a punt with in the photocomp. Quick OCUK to the rescue!

This:

Or this:

I like this more classic FM3 'official' look.. the top one is OK, but the crowd look a little too fake IMO.. still both nice pics :)

Not sure if this is a hoax, but we have screenies of the Nurb GP Circuit, and evidence of downloading it!

This could be Febs DLC!

The last one looks a bit shopped, or a crap camera..

Ash from "GamePod UK" has stated on his twitter that Microsoft are for discontinuing the X360 wheel.

Interesting if this indeed is accurate and I would assume then Microsoft perhaps nave a new model coming which you would think improves on the original and might just include clutch support for FM3.
Lets see if any other hints of this are forthcoming in the next few weeks.

The whole 360 wheel issue is a pain..

I desperately want a £100-£150 cross platform wheel with clutch , it doesn't have to be G25/PWTS quality, but somewhere between MS Wheel and those would be ideal..

It seems you have to spend £300 or bust to get something with a clutch that these days, and only the PWTS is cross platform..

I do rue the day I didn't take up the G25 @ £99 deals!

The Nurb GP Track pack is apparantly up.. 400MS points for 2 layouts..

The lighting is apparantly much cleaner/crisper on this one..

Here's Jube's Captures..

Jube3 from the GAF said:

Someone gift me a Pug 908 so I can tune it and not have to use the standard car.

GT - boroman83 :p

Tune? I thought when you do the timetrial, the car is fixed as-is?

Am I missing something?

I did 20 laps quickly yesterday (Need TC turned on), I'm down to 1:37.004, and mid 1:36's uncertified, I will download one of the top replays and ghosts and see what the fast guys are doing differently.

Anyone else get two nurburg time trial BMW's?

Yep, apparantly, you all VIP's where sent it by mistake, then you also got one for entering the official Nurburgring GP timetrial..

And news at 10, a patch is in the works, it will address amongst other things, the big glitches of transmission swap and 6th gear uber speeding..

Drag racing gets an overhaul, you finally have control over the revs, and I believe stickier tarmac and the like, no doubt to make it a bit closer to the real world, no doubt, wheelies will be do-able now!..

And a New DLC pack out early march!

This is the one picked by Jalopnik, not by the user votes. I want the one with added Cossie goodness :)

All I've heard is 'summer'.. They have to track down the cars and scan 'em in and record sounds etc...

You'd think there was a business opportunity to provide all this stuff to games companies, that and tracks etc, they all seem to do it themselves and keep re-doing it time and time again..

Does installing the 1st disk to HDD make it much faster to load?

I originally didn't have disk 1 installed, and it did 'seem' quicker once I installed it, not scientific, but I now install all my games just for convenience and to save the DVD drive spinning unnecessarily.

:)

Just been gifted the 360 Modena, this weeks 'vs' winner, not that enthralled about it, but hey, it's one more car I don't need to waste credits on!..

If you want a challenge, you really need to pick a car/tune that puts you towards the back of the grid..

The problem with FM is that you can in a lot of cases just upgrade your car well beyond the AI's capability, and it becomes a walk in the park..

the class specific ones are a bit more challenging than the standard races, but thats down to my car being ever so slightly slower. what im finding now is its me followed by second place close enough to keep me honest and the rest of the pack way behind.

I sometimes wish that they had a mode that deliberately put you in a slower car all the time, as you are finding AI on hard is not that hard when you get a bit of experience. If you do find it way too easy, just keep picking cars with much lower PI's and see how much less PI you can get away with and still get to first place..

Or just go online, find some forum organised race series, and then find out what a real challenge is!

i am looking forward to getting in on some of the ocuk clio cup action :D

You defo want to do that!!

For some real organised events, I can highly recommend www.forzamotorsport.co.uk (Home of PzR and TfR teams), they usually have at least 2 series running at a time, and all are welcome, I've entered a lot recently, there is something for everyone, they had their own Clip Cup series first race last night, it was pretty mad, it's also week 2 of the Classic American Muscle Series!

just been racing online, bit pants for someone just starting as everyone has the perfect car tuned to the max of each bracket, plus no one overtakes they just bump you off.

Yup, public races are inevitably full of joe-public!

I gave up very quickly, and why I started joining in forum racing comps.. it's the only way to have good, clean racing!

Since most run lobby systems, you tend to congregate to people of your own skill level, so never feel overwhelmed or un-challenged.

I am on about the new cars, the Holden HSV is more than the Merc E63 AMG, cant see that being the case in real life to be honest :p

The Holden HSV W427 is a limited run of highly tuned specials, listed at $150000 (Aussie Dollars), that's about £90K!!!

Well you might not care about leaderboards, but it shows how flawed the PI system is otherwise there would be a mix of cars in the top 10/100/1000 and a vast choice of cars for competitive online racing.

The only flaw as such is that swapping to AWD drivetrain has a negative impact on the PI (Due to the weight), it attributes nothing to having all 4 wheels driven, which some may argue it technically how it should be, because in real life RWD should be quicker for the same weight etc, however in practise in this game AWD has the advantage..

The other 'flaw', which is more just reflecting real life is that some cars in stock trim just don't handle very well, but have the right weight/layout that makes them better upgrade/tuning potential.. the MKII Golf being a very good example.

There is also an element of 'me too' about leaderboard cars, I've been entering a time trial competition that changes track/class every 2 weeks, and the first thing you tend to do is look at what cars are in the top 10, and pick one of those, look for a tune on the storefront that is well known/respected or used by those top 10 and if you are good enough set a top 10 time.. However, as R2's time trial showed, we refused to use the Mazda (time may have been subject to being wiped), so we looked at other cars, and we got the Lexus GT500 to positions 8 and 11 (swamped in a sea of mazda's) and that was with just a quick 'tweak'..

I think we all know that inevitably with so many variables, some cars are just going to be slightly quicker, and therefore people will flood to those once they are known, and the leaderboards can become full of the same car, but what can you do about that?

That makes no sense. If I wanted to get the fastest lap on that track, i'd use the Gumpert. As would everyone else. So the leaderboard would be full of gumperts.

Plus, they are also standard cars, not engine/drivetrain/suspension/etc swapped 'builds'..

Comparing 'stock' cars is irrelevant regarding FM3 leaderboards, a stock S5 is beaten by many other cars in that class, only when heavily 'tweaked' does it stand out..

I too think the leaderboard thing is partly inevitble, with obvious 'balance' issues that will always exist no matter what, like all games..

But i can see that the PI ratings dont mean all that much, as i went and done a bit of a test using the second group on the top gear lap times list, couldnt use the Zonda F though as it isnt on there.

Veyron - S700 - 52.312
MC12 - S663 - 50.925
Enzo - R3 721 - 51.484
LP670 SV - S648 - 52.205

So although the MC12 isnt the highest PI it won, knowing the MC12 is based on the Enzo if i remember rightly, why is the Enzo classed as an R3 car, when other competitors are in S. It makes no real sense.

T10 have said how they get the base PI rating, taking AI drivers around an imaginary course that has lots of different bits of each track (or something like that).. so comparing on 1 track is going to show differences.. put a Veyron on Le Sarthe, and surely with the humungous straights, it'd be much quicker..

I think people are expecting too much from a single PI number, without even turning a wheel in FM3, just going by how it's calculated you can immediately list a whole set of situations under which it doesn't show the real performance on any one given track/situation..

To be perfect, you would have to assess each car with every permutation of 'component' using some AI and real drivers on every course over a wide range of race distances, and Have a PI rating for every car/track/race/upgrade combination..

Or does anyone have a better idea?

Here we go again, attitude, so anything ibert says I will ignore, already he just dismisses what I say, strikes it off but no surprise as he will always think I have an agenda.

The issue again let me say is not to find the fastest car on a track thats the problem with the game. The issue is to find 6-8 cars that can be matched to be competitive together. Thats what will enchance online races.

By all means look at other more normal cars on the TG track and you could use a few of the Tracks in FM3 like Sebring or Tsukuba for a testbed. Its to the benifit of everyone if as players we find a range of cars that do compete well or even with certain mods/upgrades can compete better together. Put it to the test, create a track discussion thread and follow it through with various people . Im game if you lot are.

TG Times

Heres a good range of cars

Audi R8 1.24.4
TVR Sagaris 1.24.6
Mitsubishi Evo FQ400 1.24.8
TVR Tuscan 1.24.8
Noble M400 1.25.0
Lotus Exige S 1.25.1
BMW M3 Saloon 1.25.3
Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder 1.25.7
Lotus Evora 1.25.7
Lamborghini Gallardo 1.25.8

Do any of these in FM3 remotely compare well together, if not how do you mod them to do so?

There are plenty of similar cars you can pick in FM3 that perform very closely together, we do it all the time in MP, pick 'stock' cars and all hit a track, the only rule is you have to pick something different each, and it's never been an issue.

I also am in a second season of a touring car type series, you have a limit of A550 / 400BHP and a few 'must have' fixed upgrades and about 25 cars to choose from, that series has some 'favourites', but it's quite diverse, Golfs/Civics/Hyundai/Astra all have won races, and the top 3 last season where all different cars..

So in answer to what I think your point is, you don't have to look far to see things being closely matched in FM3, you just make it thatway if you want it to..

Compared to RL, well I don't doubt it'll diverge a bit, even the TG times are done in different conditions each time, temperature/weather/tyres, etc, etc.. so their times are not particularly going to relate to much, and only serve as an indicator.

All games are going to have flaws in performance measuring, what cars are 'close' on one track will differ on another track, you either have to make it work for you or against you, the choice is always yours.

^^been trying to find something like that for ages, it's so annoying when I'm in 2nd place but 1st place is like 4000 yards ahead and there is literally nothing I can do :( oh, and its usually an s5!

This isn't quite the same issue, no doubt that S5 is highly modded/tuned.. what you need to do is find a good 'tune' for another car that can rival the S5..

for example, you could start at Official FM.NET Tuning marketplace there are several tuning shops operating out of there with plenty of good cars..

However if you want a random car you like to compete with a tuned S5, that might not be possible!

@ Mr Latte,

The simple answer is, ignore 'leaderboards', that's another issue (I'll touch on that in a minute)..

If you want close racing, just pick the 'stock' cars and be sensible..

i.e. Hot hatches, take the Focus ST, Leon Cupra, Astra VXR, Golf GTi, you know in real life these are close enough, and unsurprisingly on track they are also close enough.. well as close as real life, there's a 2 second or so spread on the TG Track for example..

If you stick to what are normally grouped together in real life, by and large you will find that taking normal untuned versions in FM3 gives you close racing on most tracks..

However, if you mix car 'types' (e.g. EVO Vs Gallardo), then clearly you will expect that the 'track' will suit one car or the other, so although they are matched on the TG Test Track, since there is no TG Test track in FM3, you are going to have to get your mates to try various tracks etc to see which tracks make them more 'even'..

But then, cars are never identical, one will always be a little quicker then the other, even a 0.3 second difference per lap will be 3 seconds over 10 laps which is a fair distance!

All the above isn't restricted to FM, it applies to all racing games..

Now, leaderboards.. this is the domain of so many variables, they are but a token effort, in this case using PI to define the leaderboard validation criteria, but it doesn't matter what they used, with the amount of upgrades available and natural differences in cars, you can only ever expect that some cars will favour certain tracks/classes, plus people are lazy, and as we've proved in some cases, you can build alternative top 10 cars for some classes, if people pick up on that car, suddenly you've got 2 top 10 cars.. hell we even managed a #13 in a Supra as well after some tuning..

I'm not even remotely trying to defend FM3 either, I can't see how any driving game is going to succeed at the impossible either.. matching cars so evenly that there become no 'favourites'..
