**** The Official Google Pixel 2/Pixel 2 XL Thread ****

After a lot of deliberation whether to buy one or not sadly I returned my Pixel XL to Google.
I have to say it was a lovely phone in many ways but there was just something I didn't like about it, maybe it was the fact the screen wasn't fully used as on my S8. I really wanted to like it but wasn't happy, well not happy enough to keep it at that price.
To be fair to Google I posted it back on the Tuesday, they received it on the Wednesday and the money was back in my account on Thursday, can't ask for better service than that.
I made the jump from and S8 to a P2XL and don't regret it at all, camera is the best I've had and I much prefer stock android to Samsung's but each to their own :)

I'm using s3 here it got issues with prioropr of phone enabled i.e you enabled it on s3 and car then won't enable phone function at all since s3 got priority over it got some reason. Media functions are however still automatically enabled when entering car. I just keep my S3 phone function disabled.
Thanks for the info, I wouldn't use it for phone calls more interested in using it as a fitness tracker heart rate ect

Reckon you would be better off with something from Garmin like a Vivoactive HR/3 for that, and save some money?

The S3 GPS tracking isn't reputed to be the best either.

So my Pixel 2XL went in for repair, and I bought an Xperia XZ for phone duties in the mean time (I've had a couple of phone interviews).

Here are some interesting points I feel are worth sharing about my experience leaving the Pixel.

  • It's nice being able to watch videos at night (i.e. don't miss the black smearing at all)
  • Really nice not having the fingerprint sensor on the back
  • Battery life is decent on the Pixel. I can't get anywhere near a full day out of the XZ.
  • The stereo speakers on the Pixel are pretty poor compared to the Sony.
  • The ergonomics of the Sony are miles better. The phone sits so well in the hand.
  • LCDs are poor for motion blur.
  • I prefer the smaller screen of the XZ, and the larger bezels definitely don't feel old fashioned - if anything it's better as I've had no accidental touches/ghost touches.
  • I LOVE HAVING A HEADPHONE JACK
Overall, if the XZ had the camera from the Pixel, I'd probably prefer it.

It's the only thing keeping me to the Pixel.

I assume you mean the finger print sensor on the back? :) Do Sony's still have them on the power button?

I do indeed mean that :p Can't even blame it on alcohol...

Yep, integrated into the power button on the Sony. I think it's the perfect placement - small bezels and no awkward picking the phone up to unlock it.

Unless you have kids hands the best place ergonomily for the finger print is the back.

All your other dislikes for the XL 2 and the things you like about that Sony 100% indicate you should have just purchased the standard Pixel 2.

Ergonomically, maybe. But no matter how you grip the Sony, you always have a finger right by the sensor. Also, you don't have to pick the phone up to unlock it, which has been a bigger inconvenience than I thought it would be.

I bought the larger phone because it has similar dimensions to a 5.5 inch screen, which is great for my hand size. But the case I've been using is really bulky, and adds a fair bit extra to the sides, making it harder to use one handed. Because the Sony doesn't have a curved screen and isn't rounded on the sides, you have much more contact area with the device, resulting in requiring less pressure for the same grip. To add to that, the curved screen means you do get accidental touches, and I've still not found a decent screen protector for it.

Moreover, I needed the extended battery life of the XL. Had the screen been fine, I wouldn't have any issues with it being a little bigger. It is nicer having a smaller phone, but not end of the world. There's still no headphone jack on the smaller pixel, so there aren't any benefits (other than the screen) going to it. I bought the device on release day, so I had no idea it had the screen issues (poor visibility of everything black with the brightness at lowest).

That's the killer for me on the XL.

I guess it was wrong to say the camera is the only thing keeping me to it.

I'd say these are the reasons (unique to the XL)

  • 18:9 screen (I like the extra height more than I thought I would)
  • Battery life (I've been having issues with it recently, but I think it's because I've had location on 24/7)
  • Extra screen real estate due to higher pixel density. Can see much more on the display, and it's sharper.
  • The screen colour accuracy on the XL is really good - considerably better than the XZ which has a pink hue.
  • I love the colour and design. In my person opinion, it's the best looking phone, in white and black (though the red and black iPhone 8 is now joint 1st).
I haven't had enough time to hate the Sony yet :p

(Though I do really hate the camera - it is *no* better than my old Z1).

Fair enough, we all like different aspects. But don't get attached to headphones. The jack will go eventually wired headphones are the immediate future like it or not .

It's not the headphones thing, but it's having the ability to use it with anything when I need to, and not having to rely on the adapter. Then there's the lack of any decent USB-C earphones.

So update with my replacement, arrived today. Just had a chance to check it over (since the first device I received on release day had a scratched screen), and this also had a scratched screen and a crack in the bottom right hand corner.

I am done with the abysmal Google support and their disgraceful quality control.

I got this on contract - does anyone know what rights I have about getting a different phone?

Have you had an online chat with Google support, I've always found them super helpful?

Google support is fantastic. If you have it on contract then it's not really Google's responsibly. You need to speak to whoever provided your contract.

I have spoken to Google numerous times. But because I didn't get the device directly from them, I've been told that I don't get as good a service. This device came directly from them (as EE wouldn't repair it)

With regards to getting a different phone, I would have to speak to EE. However I was just wondering where I stand

That's madness its a Google device produced by Google just sold by a 3rd party....

That's what I said :/

The difference being they could have sent a device straight to me, let me check it out to make sure it works and then me send my old one back at my convenience (which would have stopped me needing to buy another phone for the endless phone interviews I've had of late). However, because the phone is from EE, they said they won't do that. Not can't, they won't. They were also really reluctant to actually do anything with my device - it took speaking to numerous people to get them to look at it. Most told me to get EE to do it (by which time they had already just said no)

I think technically, by the letter of the law (Consumer Rights Act) the retailer is the responsible party so Google are going above and beyond the bare minimum here. I agree it's not great though, especially as Apple will deal with anybody's phone in store regardless of where it was purchased.

Bit the bullet and ordered the Pixel 2 XL through TCB/CPW for £479, can't wait!
That's a great deal it's a no brainer at that price! :)
