I had trouble with them at the end of last year too.

Camera on Pixel broke, they said they would replace it. They offered me a Pixel XL, which I explained I didn't want. They said there was no stock of the Pixel left, even though it was still available to buy on the Google Store. They suggested giving me a refund so I could rebuy it from their store... Baffling. Gave up in the end.
sounds pretty fair deal to me..

Maybe they send out refurbs for a replacement like this? It could well be the easiest way was to refund and let you buy again. As said, seems fair.

It really wasn't. They offered a 32gb Pixel XL to replace a 128gb Pixel and it took them nearly 3 weeks to offer the refund. All they did was repeatedly apologise for stock supply problems and they hoped it would be sorted soon - but it took a very long time and many complaints for that to happen.

Did you buy it via Google or cpw

Google themselves, precisely because of the good experiences I've had with their support over the years :( I'll think again before buying something else from them.

I had trouble with them at the end of last year too.

I had a similar issue trying to get hold of my free promo Home Mini. They told me there was no stock available to fulfill the promotion, even though they were selling them on their website. I couldn't get to the bottom of what was going on, but it seems like their stock system is completely inflexible and / or reassigning stock from it is impossible for low-ranking support staff.

Surprisingly, one of the guys I spoke to last week about my Pixel speaker issue suggested that they might be able to give me a full refund (rather than processing an RMA), which I thought sounded great. Unfortunately he disappeared and my reply was answered by Customer Service Droid ABT4-1212 who just ignored my questions and told me that my phone was not faulty at all. Sigh.

The first customer support person I spoke to through chat was really good, spent about an hour diagnosing the problem. After the phone was assessed as needing replacing communication moved to being via email. From then on I dealt with half a dozen other agents who seemed quite unhelpful.

Obviously all organisations have staff which are good or not so good, but was left with the impression that unless you get a particularly good agent, they're rather inflexible at Google. They're not impolite or anything, just nothing seemed to happen.

Hi . I have a Galaxy s7 edge and am looking to get a new phone mainly for the photography side . I know these two (Google pixel 2 xl and Huawei P20 Pro ) ,are rated really highly ( and cheaper than the Galaxy s9 plus ) but can people advise me on which they would pick from personal use. I will be mainly taking low light pic. I know its subjective but any personal opinions would be appreciated.

Google will release a mid range Pixel device in 2019 which will have the SD710 SoC.

How much it will fost and what features it will have is anybody's guess?

I'm hoping for a mid range Pixel 3 this year so I can upgrade from my Nexus 5.

I cant justify £600 on a mobile. £300 is more my price range.
I upgraded from my trusty Nexus 5 to a Pixel 2XL and it was well worth it. I initially had the same thoughts as you but I bit the bullet and bought it on my credit card, 2 months later it was payed off and I no longer feel bad about spending £630 on a phone.
The camera alone makes it worth it for me. I have free original quality photo storage till 2021 and having 2 young kids means I'm taking full advantage of it.

Still getting the runaround from Google. I've now had the following reply three times:

Google Support Robots said:
I've received an update from my specialist team and I'd like to inform you that as the Pixel 2 speakers were tuned for balanced audio playback and loudness, and improving performance for certain types of content can affect playback performance for others. This is intended behavior. Reducing volume can reduce distortion.

I'm not really sure on what planet you sell a device with speakers and then tell the customer it's their fault if they experience distortion at certain volumes. Surely you should cap the volume then? I've had around 20 smartphones over the last ten years and not a single one has ever had this problem. What an utter joke.

It's even more vexing when I've told them that other Pixel 2 XLs don't have this problem, and others have had RMAs for it. They're not only frustrating to deal with, they're discriminatory too!

I'm wondering what my options are now. They're clearly breaking the law but given the nature of the copy and paste responses I just don't think they care.

They did this with the various issues that plagued the 6P during the first year. Don't give in and keep persuing. Google are an absolute joke the way they look after their products at certain times - no wonder folks goto Apple. As a former 6P owner I was lucky to have been on the lucky end of things and had to never contact them once with my trusty 6P that I still have.

I've asked to complain and I got the following back:

As you'd like to file a formal complaint please follow these below steps. Once you submit the form our Product and Engineering team will review your concern and take appropriate actions.
  1. Open the device's Settings .
  2. Tap Support & Tips.
  3. Enter your feedback.
  4. Tap Send

I'm not convinced that sounds like a formal complaints procedure to me, but there we go... gotta be worth a try. They really are useless.

This is concerning, especially considering people were buying phones from Google on the strength of their warranty and customer service.

Another thing I was reading today was that Android P was unlikely to be deployed to the original pixel book. So, after just 2 years they've essentially stopped supporting a 1k+ laptop!

I know that doesn't have anything to do with the phone but it does show you that Apple, whether you like them or loathe them, do look after their customers better. I mean the iPhone 5S is still getting updates and it's a 5 year old phone. Yet we are chuffed because Google say that they will support a pixel 2 for 3 years. Knowing how they've gone on in the past you can guarantee it won't be supported beyond that.
