**** The Official Google Pixel 2/Pixel 2 XL Thread ****

After a few weeks of trying the new gestures I've gone back. Change for changes sake and it doesn't seem to make anything more efficient. The pill is ugly and it doesn't save any screen estate. Pressing the apps button is probably easier than swiping and quite often the swipe right gesture for previous app stops working. Completely pointless and badly implemented

I just tried switching back and now keep trying to swipe up on the home button...
I agree with your other points though. I think the original setup is probably quicker. I'll most likely revert back myself.
EDIT: In future releases, are they likely to keep it as an option or do you think they will go this route with the new home button gesture swiping and do away with the old three button?

I thought I read the XL3 will be gesture only. Hope I am wrong.

I imagine it will continue to be an option for pixel 2s but anything newer will have it removed.

Another thing I forgot to say in my earlier post is that I also occasionally feel like the animation when swiping up is not smooth, but using the button it's nearly always smooth. Sounds a minor point but these things make a big difference to the end user experience.

Yeah I just don't get it. I expected the gesture system to be in place for the BETA and then they'd realise it was a stupid idea and take it out.

At least on the current Pixels we can turn it off and go back to the old, better way of working. I think I also read the new phone doesn't even have the option.

Do you lose the default live wallpapers if you upgrade to Android 9.0? I'm ashamed to say I quite like the default coastal scene from 8.0.

(I seem to remember -perhaps mistakenly- losing my old wallpapers on my Pixel going from 7 to 8).

Nope, I'm currently using the live beach wallpaper on 9.0.
I was hoping for some new live wallpapers but they may be being held for the Pixel 3 release.

One massive improvement I've noticed (on my device anyway) is that the Share Screenshot feature via Google Assistant now works first time EVERY time.
I'm not sure who else experienced the issue on 8.0, I saw it on a few forums. It would occur when you wanted to share a screenshot and the error message saying 'something went wrong' pops up and you have to go through the process again - it always worked second time round but it was a massive PIA.
I mentioned it previously on this thread but I think the saturated colour profile is much better. Before I was on boosted because saturated looked awful but I believe it's much better now.
No Bluetooth issues here either on any device as I had with 8.0 until 8.1 came along.

I'm sure I have had some issues with screenshots before. Dunno if it's fixed as not tried since. Very minor point but I've noticed now that the setting a timer from a long press on the clock icon works every time now whereas it used to sometimes take you to an existing one. First World problems but these things take the shine off the UX.

Not noticed any difference with the saturated profile but i wasn't looking really. Perhaps you're right there.

Otherwise it's been a decent update although my phone no longer rapidly charges - it says it does but it clearly doesn't as it takes hours and hours to charge now. I found this out at the weekend when my plug sockets in my room when I was staying away weren't working so I tried topping my phone up in a pub and it took way longer than expected. Very annoying.

Also I still find gboard dire so I've gone to swiftkey again.

Mine is rapid charging fine, I actually did a test yesterday for the first time since the update. It went from 11% to 70% in one hour. It then took a further 35mins to get to 90% but by this stage I was using it which slows it down and I know the charging rate is supposed to tail off around 80% anyway.
One thing I haven't tested is rapid charging first thing in the morning. Plenty of complaints about the phone not charging when it's cold in the morning, be interesting to see if that has changed.

Hadn't really noticed it before, but I'm not overly keen on the new pastel colouring for the phone Favourites, Recent and Contacts.

Indeed, not fond of the font either. I don't know why they've used such ugly washed out pastel colours in these apps, it doesn't make use of the vibrant OLED screen. Similarly they seem to have increased the amount of white space- I thought white was the worst colour you can have with OLED as it uses the most power (might be wrong).
