**** The Official Google Pixel 2/Pixel 2 XL Thread ****

Yes, bigger is just bigger. Some people will think that's better, others not. I know to my brother bigger is definitely worse. He doesn't like if his thumb can't reach parts of the screen. (He bought the Pixel 2)

That is also fine (I have likewise bought the Pixel 2)

You pay £170 and decide if it's worth the money over the 2, the size is just one factor in that.

Yes, but screen quality never was a factor, that's all I'm saying. We weren't paying £170 for a better screen, just a bigger screen... and has been mentioned, the battery, although my brother is very impressed with the battery life on the 2. Whole day at Comic Con (with patchy signal, which is often a killer) and still 70% left at the end! He recons his Nexus 5X would have been at 10%.

On the topic of screens, this is my problem with the pixel 2:

Similar sized body yet the GS 8 has a screen, which is 0.8" bigger.........

And the GS 8 is £150 cheaper.....

I prefer the Pixel 2 - way easier to use in the hand. You don't have to constantly shift the phone up and down your hand.

I'm not too sure about the battery being bigger increasing battery life. It'll increase standby battery life for sure, but SOT is probably similar between the two devices. Apparently the screen on the P2XL is quite a power hog!

Why would you need to shift the P2 up and down in your hand, but not the S8? The handsets are the same size while the screen on the S8 is around a centimeter longer at each end. I'd assume that as the Samsung has everything but the kitchen sink, that you can pull down the notification shade by swiping down on the finger print reader too?

I am personally undecided on the P2XL, currently own a Sony Xperia XZ and don't really want to go to a smaller screen. Am considering the XZ Premium, U11 Plus, P2XL...!

The S8 screen really jumps out at you and looks great.

But in reality stuff just isn't formatted for the screen most of the time. OK you scroll a bit less on a webpage, but otherwise so what? I'm not a die hard Google fanboy, I just simply don't get the benefits of 18:9 other than bragging rights.

Plus you are stuck with Samsung software/Bixby :D

It means you can hold it with the same ease of a smaller screen but get more vertical real estate. Like anything it'll take time for software to adjust to it.

Has anyone managed to try a Pixel 2 that's been connected to the in-store WiFi? I've just been to store #4 to try one out, and yet again it was disconnected from the WiFi. The guy in PC World tried to connect it but said that the retail/demo firmware wouldn't let him. All of the Samsung phones were connected, of course :/

Are Google trying not to sell these phones?!

Yes but you still haven't given me a tangible benefit of this additional height :p

More of a webpage fits on screen at the same time, more posts/comments on reddit, more icons in your launcher etc. Most software will make use of the additional pixels to display more content at one time.

The 6" display on the P2XL can display the same amount of 16:9 content as a 5.5" 16:9 screen, as the screens are almost exactly the same landscape height.

It is only media that has a problem, if you want to call it that, with an 18:9 display. You'll have some black bars to the sides, but you are not losing out in physical size of the video vs a similarly sized 16:9 panel.
Same goes for photos. a 5.5" 16:9 panel vs a 6" 18:9 makes no compromises when displaying widescreen 16:9 photos.

Pretty much this.

As someone who does a lot of browsing via web + reddit, the bigger screen and 18.9 is of great benefit.

I don't really watch much on my phone either, only a bit of youtube and black bars don't bother me.

Samsung should try releasing a stock Oreo ROM. Nothing added maybe make some of the touch Wizz features into apps like the camera suite for example and see how many more units they ship.

Hardware wise and looks the Samsung's are fantastic

To be fair most movies are done in 21:9, so that means smaller bars anyway on the 18:9 screen v's 16:9. In fact, you can view a movie using the full display with no bars and only lose a tiny bit of the content. I can't see any downsides to 18:9

Yup true that, I have a 21.9 monitor and watching 21.9 content on it is pure bliss. I find it even better than watching 21.9 content on a bigger 16.9 display.

But as said, I'm not one for movies on phone. Would a 21.9 oled tv though!
