*** The Official HTC Desire (Bravo) Thread! ***

Right, I've just bit the bullet and started installing DeFrost (after rooting etc)

At the moment, the screen just has a rather nice animation of an 'X' forming (from four different coloured lines)

It's been on this for a bout 15mins, is this normal? How do you know when it's finished?

I'm paranoid Im going to balls something up on my phone!!

Thanks!

I have an Orange branded Desire. In order to remove the branding and be able to install custom ROMs, is it literally as simple as using the Unrevoked tool? Or is there more to it? I'm slowly coming round to the idea of being bothered..

My new (replacement) Desire (HBoot 0.83) is all rooted and flashed :)

Steps I took:

1) Download Unrevoked and the AmonRa recovery image (I followed the links from the XDA thread I mentioned earlier).
2) Booted phone into recovery and checked for HBoot drivers (if you need to install them, the instructions are in the Unrevoked directory). I already had them installed (I've done this before).
3) Reboot phone, but leave it unplugged.
4) Run Unrevoked. Go File > Custom... and select the AmonRa recovery image (should be an .img).
5) Connect phone. Unrevoked should do it's stuff.
6) Once installed, it leaves it at the recovery screen. I rebooted here and checked I had root access.
7) Reboot into AmonRa recovery, and make Nandroid backup of the (bloated) stock image.
8) Install latest radio image (5.09.00.20) and reboot to finish installation etc.
9) Once installed, rebooted into recovery, wiped, and installed OpenDesire (although I am probably going to go back to LeeDroid).

This is all on an Orange branded handset. I haven't sim unlocked it, but I assume it is locked to carrier as it came straight from Orange.

It'll do that the first time, but as long as it doesn't keep rebooting it should be fine eventually. You can always restore the Nandroid backup you took before flashing.

You did take one, right?

Yep, as per the guide, I took a backup in ROM installer before installing the new ROM.

So should it eventually stop this animation? It occasionally pauses as if it's thinking about something, but then resumes.

I dont want to take the battery out just in case! I might wait a bit longer!

The animation is like the Windows boot animation - when it stops the phone will show the lockscreen and be ready to use.

Do you have an EXT partition on your SD card? I believe DeFrost uses A2SD+ - if that is the case you will definitely need one.

Worst comes to the worst, boot into recovery and restore your backup. Then try again.

Gentlemen!

I may have swayed a colleague away from Blackberry and iPhone today, he wanted a phone to communicate with his lady friend abroad and they have a choice of the 3 so I showed him fring and Android FroYo in general and he responded with "bloody Hell!"

I also showed him show good a modded ROM is (DeFrost) by showing him the camera smoothness among other bits.

Mission accomplished I think.

I was just following this guide (after reading a few others too!)
http://www.droid-den.com/phone-guid...install-rooted-android-2-2-on-your-htc-desire

It didnt mention anything about a partition, so I didnt do one, and that guide was for defrost too.

Should I try to cold restart it? ie take the battery out

Any ROM that uses A2SD2+ needs an EXT partition. I'm not sure if DeFrost handles both A2SD+ and A2SD though - I've always had an EXT partition, primarily because A2SD is naff :p

Try creating an EXT partition using AmonRa recovery (if you've got that flashed). That might fix it. Otherwise, you could try restoring your backup and following my steps above (although I assume no responsibility if it kills your pet etc)

Just flash a recovery image (run unrevoked 3.2) then boot into recovery and create an ext partition, it's really as easy as it sounds.

Backup your SD card beforehand as it needs to wipe it.

So I would want the 'format sd-ext' option in the recovery options?

I have only the Defrost ROM and radio ROM on the SD at the moment, which are still on my comp, so I assume I'll be able to drag those across after the format?

I don't remember - I did it back in May. But basically that sounds right. The SD card needs 2 partitions really, one EXT (I think the recommended was 512mb), and the remainder FAT32.

Yup. The format isn't going to break anything - it's just an SD card (not the internal phone memory).

Format sd-ext won't work as you don't have an sd-ext to format :p

Partition Menu > Partition SD Card and choose 0mb swap, 512MB EXT and remainder = fat32.

Job done after that.

Lokkers did you have any luck rooting your Orange Desire? Droid Den has really good guides for Bootloaders <0.8 but nothing with 0.9 which mine came with (and I'm presuming yours as its new)?
