*** The Official HTC One M8 Thread ***

Android market is dire this year - no wonder even the supposedly disappointing iPhone 5C is outselling all the major Android handsets.

iPhone 6 will dominate... as usual.

what are people disliking about it?

The black bar with HTC on the front of the phone that serves no purpose whatsoever. What a complete waste of space.

At least on the original HTC one it housed the home/menu buttons, but this time round it is just there for decoration and it just isn't needed.

Other than that, I think it looks lovely

Actually, it seems the black band is there for a reason: http://www.androidcentral.com/htc-one-review-2014-m8

For what it’s worth, HTC says there’s still a good bit of functionality (some of it having to do with the display) tucked back there.

I have a feeling this is what interacts with that strange looking case... or purely for the screen...? No idea... still, the black band is actually bigger than the one on the M7 looking at comparison pics.

hahah :o

MP means sod all ;)

Then do explain to everyone why shots from the HTC One look so bad when displayed on a high resolution monitor, are cropped or when you zoom in compared to devices using 13MP cameras? I suppose that has nothing to do with megapixels and they are just bad cameras, is that what your saying?

HTC are just so stupid (always have been).

I really like the design of the phone, I think there's probably something behind the black HTC bar on the front, so that doesn't bother me much. The metal looks great and I'm sure it's nice in the hand. I'm sure the screen is excellent, and so are the front facing speakers. SD slot is great too.

It seems they've done a very good job with the software optimisation and battery life, which is great. It sounds like it'll easily get 2 days of medium use.

So, why on earth are HTC, a company with everything resting on this phone, trying to fight against the 'megapixel myth' and putting silly camera features on their phone? What's the point? The iPhone 5S camera, as an example, covers all bases well, why not just try and replicate that? It's not really about the megapixels, the camera just isn't very good, it seems. They've removed OIS as well to achieve this...

It's a sad state of affairs when the front camera is apparently better most of the time... unbelievable.

I can maybe live with the camera, but I'm expecting the S5 and Z2 to be a lot better in that department.

Will be able to get this for £380 and a Note 3 for a few quid less yet i am still gonna opt for a Note 3. Apart from build quality there is nothing much that interests me unfortunately. Had high hopes for this as well

Honestly you kids are really whinging about nothin. Camera phones are all really good these days. If you really want a noticeable quality improvement you need a bigger sensor, ie. get a real camera. Those whinging about lack of megapixels are even sillier. The sensor and lens physically can not resolve 16mp. Even a lot of low level cameras aren't pixel sharp at that resolution.

It seems to have a clearly inferior camera to most others.

I think it's stupid they've done such a bad job of the camera. It isn't that hard to get it right.

It isn't really about the megapixels either. Most of the picture samples look quite poor.

I'm still interested, but will need to try it out first and see.

All a little underwhelming for me. What's going on with the 2014 flagships?

It's now down to the following phones for me:

LG G3
One Plus One phone (announcement 25th April)
Note IV
Nexus 6

Til then my G2 will serve me well.

The new HTC One with Samsung's 16MP Camera with ISOCELL would be an almost perfect phone.

It's sad that HTC choose to add camera gimmicks rather than actually improving the camera.

what i never understand with new launches is..

better tech exists ..why use this poor hardware..

obviously the companies dont want to put the best of everything in as they want to beat it next round but this is a bit too far on the poor side. Much Much better hardware exists that is established. Why not include a bigger battery? why not include a better sensor? etc

Its one thing when the competition arent doing it..but they are!

It seems so easy to trump the competition with what is available. The profit on this model (at launch price) is crazy assuming they havent wasted the budget somewhere and costed it in

MP doesnt always make a better camera..especially not more for mores sake..but 4 isnt good! You wont be able to crop in far at all.
And as Robbo said..MP is a big marketing thing..to joe average who doesnt trawl tech sites this is going to look poorer.
In fact i would say for marketing it is better to have a higher MP that is poor vs a low MP which is good..if they arent leagues apart

I dont understand it tbh

I also HATE gimmicks..i dont think they sell a phone either.
In marketing terms i would suspect >MP holds a higher weight than gimmick count
