*** The Official HTC One M8 Thread ***

ordered mine from three £469.99 pay as you go, been told its unlocked and unbranded, hoping i get it tomorrow to play with it

im currently on sim only on three £20, carphonewarehouse had it for £530 sim free,

i have been using the galaxy s3 to s4 and currently have the note 3 but wanting something smaller , and i think its time to move away from touchwiz

Would this have been so terribly difficult?

Obviously I'm ignorant of most of the issues, but one can wish.

Pretty decent price I think on PAYG. I'd also seen that price at Carphone and been looking at sim only deals.

Vodafone contract up in a couple weeks from my One X and been looking at the One M8 on simfree and then just possibly going sim only with 3 who look like they have a decent 4G sim with 4GB data for low 20's.

Probably. Don't think that it's just empty space underneath the black bar. There will likely have been a lot of design decisions to be made about that space and what's behind it. I doubt very much that HTC would decide to just put a black band there with a logo on rather than use it for screen real estate.

Not sure if srs, or trolling :p

I am serious? I'd prefer a thicker phone to be honest! :) that is simply too long and seems like a lot of space is wasted, that picture above me explains exactly why I as a designer would have removed that and probably made it thicker.

but then again.. nexus 5, lg g2 etc manage to do it without that ;) no bumsound tho but you see my point! those 2 speakers shouldn't add that much.

I think it bad usage of space, a good comparison is the Z2, which offers a bigger battery, bigger screen, has a much bigger camera sensor and stereo speakers. Its a tiny bit taller, 3m wider and a mm thinner. It seems like HTC is making poor use of space, and they wasted space on that Duo camera, which I think is more of a gimmick then useful.

It really is a gimmick considering the second camera is purely used for depth perception and nothing else. I wouldn't have mind it if it could boost the quality of the pictures but it seems useless most of the time.

A teardown of the M8 here: http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/HTC+One+(M8)+Teardown/23615

Seems the screen does need to use the space behind the HTC logo. But it does look like they could have shrunken that area by a fair it. Looking at the daughterboard where the camera modules are held seems mostly bare, I'm sure they could have made that more compact.

The camera seems passable but sadly not great, I'll have to have a play with one but I like everything else about it.

Part of me wants there to be "hidden" capacitative keys on that black bar that can be unlocked via software... :(

I'm calling it now - I reckon LG G3 will come early (May, perhaps), and make all these other phones look silly :p
