***The Official HTC Sensation thread***

I have that too but:

1) Thumb doesn't cost much anyway
2) Thumb allows you to tailor the size of the keyboard keys and rows and fonts
3) Thumb has keyboard themes
4) Thumb has layout customisations for both landscape and portrait keyboards (split qwerty, with/without arrows/numpad etc)

Thumb Keyboard is better than it though, it's better than all other normal keyboards too!

Yup, I know, but since he said himself that he is a sense fanboy, and that he likes it, I think it would be best for him.

I love thumb keyboard to, so many options! :D

I like SwiftKey X Beta, and you don't have to pay for it.

Also like it, especially the prediction.

If you mean me, I am not having second thoughts, nothing would make me go back to the SGS2. When I first got that I killed the battery in 4 hours flat while playing with it.

Turning background data seems to have slowed battery consumption significantly.

Nope I don't mean you.

That's usually the case with android mobiles though, the battery isn't great for the first week or 2, plus the battery life is better than the sensation and should be in theory.

So either:

- You didn't give it long enough
- Faulty battery
- Had a bad app installed, which was hogging all the resources
- Screen on max brightness

Or something else.

Yeah I know they get better after a good few charge cycles. Screen is on auto.

One thing I just noticed on the battery graph is the wifi is not going off when the phone is asleep/standby. That can't be right can it?

Also from what I have read, auto brightness isn't really the best thing for battery life either or optimal for the light conditions, better of using switchpro or some other switch/app/widget were you just select what brightness level you want e.g. 20%, 60% and 90%.

My friend and brother have got the desire (stock 2.2) and noticed better battery life with it off and them manually controlling it.

If you have got the wifi setup to sleep when not in use then no, maybe you have some app in the background that is constantly using a connection, so wifi will stay active.

Again I have found from my experience and others when wifi is constantly on, it is much better for battery life than a mobile network connection (apart from 2G) and not having the wifi to turn off when your not using it, just keep it on and see.

I'm torn between the Sensation and the Samsung GalaxyS2:

Positives:
  • Great screen
  • Fastest phone out there
  • Unlocked bootloader
  • Light
  • Great camera/camcorder

Negatives:
  • Form factor is awkward, very wide and tall
  • TouchWiz - Applications are poorer than HTC Sense
  • Sound quality - Even sound modification writter for the original SGS said he can't do anything with it because of the Yamaha DAC is bugged.
  • GPS performance - one review site said it didn't lock and keep onto all GPS satellites unlike the Sensation that used all 9 available 100% of the time

Whilst there are good 3rd party applications out there, they don't quite cover the functionality of Sense and even if they did, I would like some uniform look between them all. I know Go applications are popular on here and I think they look great and are a vast improvement over stock applications but there's still features of HTC Sense that they miss.

However, I've also read about a lot of negatives about the HTC Sensation too, which also puts me off:
  • Dust getting under the screen
  • Camera issues due to lack of lens
  • Case not always fitting tightly to the screen
  • Locked bootloader, if I get a branded unit, this could be an issue unless a stock RUU can be used which has an unlocked bootloader.

Decisions, decisions....

Hmm

GPS is no problem here, 10 satellites locked and used. This all depends on your area and reception of course.

I only use the Calendar app which is great, the other stuff are not part of TouchWhiz though, TW is just the launcher, replace it and you still have all the cool stuff usable like managing a call right from the notification bar so you can talk while you surf or whatever and backlight control by dragging the notification bar and so on.

The sound isn’t as loud as the iPhone 4 but it’s clear and crisp especially after enabling DSPManager. You can certainly watch a movie or listen to music and not get bogged down by inferior sound quality.

You should probably opt for the Galaxy S II Mekrel.

While people may be complaining about the sound quality on the SGS2, the Sensation isn't any better.

I think it's perfectly fine anyway, it sounds good to me and I'm pretty fussy.

Had my Sensation since Friday.

The Battery life is awful. And I'm loosing sound completely when using certain apps - but this seems to be a known bug as there are many threads all over the place about it. Only a restart brings the sound back.

Other than that it's great.

Agreed. Got mine on Saturday. 1st charge lasted around 21hrs (but I did hammer it during that time).
2nd charge is now at 21hrs with around 40% left (30% usage since 8am this morning with a couple of downloads, a couple of text messages and around 20mins of calls! That's with wi-fi off, bluetooth off plus data off overnight). I'm hoping it's going to improve so I don't have to panic every time I go near it that I'm going to lose another 5%.

The benchmark for me is ideally around 2 days (used to easily get this with my 3GS, although it now struggles to last 1 day).

Other than that, the phone is great. I don't have any of the "common" problems people mention, I just need the battery to improve before I'll be happy with it.

Well, just gone and bought one whilst in town and have it sat on my desk.

Just backing up all user applications and data before firing her up :)

I can't find an option to set sleep when in standby, other than turning on power saving constantly.

Go to settings>Wireless & networks>wi fi settings>hit menu button>advanced and then wifi sleep policy

Do my eyes deceive me!?

:p

I am sure once you get it set up with third party apps etc. you won't miss sense that much ;)

Apps I recommend:

SMS - GO sms pro
Contacts/dialler - GO dialler
Browser - boat browser or dolphin HD
Email - K9
Keyboard - Swype, swift key beta x or thumb keyboard
Launcher - GO launcher or launcher pro plus
Music player - poweramp, winamp
Gallery - quick pic
Video player - mobo player
Lockscreen - widget locker
Weather app/widget - fancy widgets, palmary pro, snowstorm, GO weather

Enjoy :)

Thanks Nexus, I sometimes forget about trying the menu button. :)

I tried making my galaxy into sense but it just wasn't the same, It looked ok but as soon as you clicked on anything you got the bland boring galaxy s2 apps! ;) Just like having an MR2 that is kitted to look like a Ferrari 355. Looks ok at a glimpse but when you look closer it looks like a dog! Sorry!

He's just listed a load of apps, so you wouldn't get the Galaxy S2 apps?

While I agree it still doesn't really look as nice, it isn't all that far off.

No problem :)

Yeah if you just want the homescreen look, then this is without a doubt the best thing there is to mimic sense:

https://market.android.com/details?id=fr.clockwidget.lpclassicsense&feature=search_result

Also GO launcher has now got a sense theme:

https://market.android.com/details?id=com.gau.go.launcherex.theme.Sense&feature=search_result

Haha, I know, that's is why I listed third party apps, which are much better in terms of functionality and the UI/looks.

I hate touchwiz with a passion too :p, although I quite like the calendar and some of their widgets.

hehe, yeah I really don't mean to slate the Galaxy, it is a great device. If it had Sense and all that is beneath sense on it, it would truly be a killer phone.

I have changed my Wifi policy now to "Never while charging" So theoretically it should go off when the screen is off.

According to the battery graph monitor thingy it is still staying on????
