@Captain pretty much sums it up above.

I just think if Apple were going to go USB-C with the iPhone they’d have done it by now.
Once they get wireless charging up to around 30w I can see them binning the port altogether. Heck, even AirDrop can transfer files quicker than the lightning usb protocol.
The only issue (personally) I can see is how would you connect it to the likes of the DJI controller but I’m sure down the line they’ll implement some sort of wireless system for that - although doesn’t help legacy units.

I think it’s the next iPhone that has to have USB-C or nothing due to EU regs.

Either way the days of lightning are numbered and I don’t think they can go completely portless without screwing over a load of their partners and customers.

E.g car play, drones, flir cameras etc.

15 years of iPhone and we’ve had 2 port changes, no point moving to USB-C this late into the iPhone cycle unless they decide to keep USB-C around for the next 3-4 cycles of iPhones.

Wouldn’t make any sense for them unless it was a long term port like lightning.

10 years we’ve had the lightning port, May as well keep it until they go completely wireless.
Going completely wireless is a stupid idea and they should never do it. USB-C is what it should be

They can’t.
I don't really care what they do. No matter what it is, people will complain.

There was a huge outcry when they switched from dock to lightning because everyone had to buy new cables. There's absolutely nothing wrong with lightning, anyone who's had iPhones for any length of time will have loads of them kicking around. I don't understand the hate for lightning, perhaps someone can explain it to me.

In my house, there are practically no usb-c cables, if they switched to usb-c then we'd be throwing out a load of perfectly good cables and having to replace them.

I don't understand the logic of people saying they won't buy an iPhone unless they switch to usb-c. Why does it really matter, it's just a connector and the phone comes with a cable that plugs into it. It's not as though it's any great inconvenience.

Lightning is massively outdated and a garbage cable. USB-C is the future and can both elevate the iPhone in terms of charging speeds and also data transfers (which becomes more and more apparent with high quality images and prores) Also just because you only use apple products that have lightning cables, doesnt mean thats what everyone else has. Majority of products that require a cable these days use USB-C, including other apple products like the ipads and macbooks.

Having 1 superior cable to use for everything is the ideal situation

The lightning port/connector itself is actually superior to USB-C. It’s easier to plug in and out and USB-C is far more fragile in that regard.

It’s proprietary so it’s never going to ‘win’ when the wider market is far broader. Ido agree that it’s easier to have one cable that can do everything but in reality the impact it actually has is negligible.

They could allow faster charging if you wanted to but it comes at a cost in battery degradation. There is no such thing as a free lunch and the battery in a phone which charges at 100w is going to be ****** in 24 months.

The USB C thing is inevitable at this point I think. Considering they have other devices using USB-C only it would make sense but they don't want appear like they're conceding. Even their Beats headphones went from Lightning to USB-C a couple of years back.
It's so much more convenient to be able to go away with 1 power brick and 1 cable and be able to charge all my devices, including my macbook and work laptop etc. That being said, I almost never plug my iPhone into a charger and use wireless 99% of the time, I don't think I've plugged a phone in of any kind to transfer data for years. Probably not since I was rooting android phones!

Perhaps those that use 4k video would benefit from a more faster/ up to date method of transferring files? Potential for rumoured 8k video in iPhone 14 pro would be severely hampered I'd assume?

Apple you’ll tell you that you can edit them on device in iMovie, they will be automatically upload to iCloud which can be accessed anywhere and you can airdrop them to your Mac in seconds :D
