** The Official OcUK Mechanical Keyboard Thread **

And it's here...my new Ducky Shine 3 Limited Edition (red switches). An absolute luxury given my setup but the lack of LED on the Filco was the only negative or thing that annoyed me (a Filco with RGB LEDs would be nirvana I think).

Initial thoughts in comparison to the Filco are:

  • It's about the same weight (very slightly lighter).
  • Slightly more angled upwards than the Filco, to the point the F keys are about another keycap in height higher.
  • The LED back lighting isn't as prominent as the normal Ducky I expect but it's good enough.
  • The Ducky has better grips and therefore slides far less easily
  • The build quality is exceptional (as it is on both).
  • However the PBT plastic keycaps on this Ducky are lovely. Really nice feel to them.

The red switches will take a bit of getting used to because they are so light. But overall happy so far with the keyboard and as ever and the brilliant services from Overclockers UK.

It's really helped rekindle my love for FPS games, I've also ordered the new version of the fUnc Surface 1030 and will probably pair it with a Mionix Naos 7000, should be quite a nice setup!

I've had the FUNC 1030 L for just under a year, replacing an old 7-year FUNC pad. Really great mouse surface. Use it with a Roccat Kone XTD although part of me wishes I stuck with an optical mouse.

They have the Filco Ninja Majestouch2 TKL with Red switches? I never thought they offered the non-Ninja TKL with RED switches.

Still on the Brown/Ninja/TKL myself although I've ordered a new keyboard from OC'ers today.

How do you find the browns? Have you used any reds before? Is there any comparison you can make? Trying to figure out how much different they feel.

I saw that they for a Ninja version with Reds, but I kinda like the keys with the prints on top. I was looking around and saw a nice Ducky TKL board which I posted a thread on in here and wondering if OCUK are going to stock some. Can't see the specific one onsite at the moment.

See my post above - my new Ducky Shine 3 with red switches turned up today :)

The reds are lighter to type on, require less pressure to push down and feel more responsive as a result. Where as the browns are heavier, require more force to press. Might be that I've only had this new keyboard with red switches for a few hours but if I was buying an 'all-rounder' keyboard for typing on, as well as gaming I'd prefer the browns. They are more comfortable to type on. Because my PC is a gaming machine the reds feel more suitable for gaming on and I'll prefer this keyboard for that task.

This particular keyboard with PBT keycaps also feels nicer to type on than the Filco keycaps, although obviously you can change this. Hard to explain but there's a fine, almost powdery texture to the keys, you can feel they are more 'robust'. Absolutely awesome to press.

I am loving my Corsair K60 with red switches that I got recently...

...however I find it a bit difficult to do "double taps". In UT 2004 you double tap to dodge and I am finding it a bit difficult to do this on the K60.

I think if there was a tactile bump I would feel more confident, with reds I am finding it difficult to tell if I've bottomed out enough, even though the keys need very little pressure to actuate.

So I am not convinced that reds are right for me, I think blues would be better for me as they have a tactile bump.

In all other respects the K60 is brilliant, epic build quality and looks and all the features I need. I just have to get used to it I suppose.

AFAIK Browns are pretty much Reds but with a tactile bump feel - same sound. Someone correct me if wrong :p

Brows feel very different to reds imo. The tactile bump makes a huge difference when typing.

I thought it would. I'm in a bit of a pickle atm.

Currently have a full size Filco Majestouch 2 with reds, but selling it as I wanted a tenkeyless version of the same board.. Well turns out NOWHERE stocks a UK version of this board in a tenkeyless manner?! There are ones with browns, blacks and clears (?)!

So I either take a risk and get the browns and maybe not like them, or get a ninja TKL with reds - not entirely sure I like the way the keys are printed.

Halp.

Potentially yeah but if possible I'd like to not risk trying something new as I like reds. I've fired a certain website an email asking if they'll ever stock the red ones and if not, probably try a brown.

Managed to confuse myself with all the recommendations so far. Any opinions on which Cherry Browns based fulll size (101 key) keyboard is the best to go for. Mixed general purpose and gaming not too worried about price.

Will be coming from a Osmium Aivia with reds which has some odd continued double press problems which Gigabyte firmware updates have still failed to fix to the point I've had enough.

I have a blue ducky shine 3 which is lovely and i tried the browns in the shop at the time of purchase which i liked, but subsequently went for blue switches. That was my first mechanical keyboard about 2 months ago.
A week ago i purchased a CM Storm QF TK with white back light and brown switches which i use with my work laptop when working from home. I must say i love brown switches too.

Having said all of that if you want cool backlighting features i would recommend the DS3 with Brown for full size. If full size isnt a major requirement i would recommend the CM Storm QF TK with browns switches which comes with white back lighting.

Im sure others will recommend other brands too.

good luck

Manage to try out some mechanical keyboards today and they felt great, really wanna get one now :D Sorry to treat you like tech support, but what's the bets keyboard I could get for around the £60? Will be used for gaming and also a lot of typing, so I'm leaning towards blue switches but I think browns might be better overall.

SteelSeries 6Gv2 I'd go for, here's a link. Might be worth googling it too. AHEM. ;)

Forgot to say, available with other colour switches too I think.

Generally depends if you want any of the gimmicks that come with it, backlighting, macro keys, etc.. I usually don't, so for a pure keyboard I can't recommend Filco enough - built like an absolute tank!
