****The Official Samsung Galaxy S II Thread***

What are the advantages of rooting the phone? Does this effectively mean that the user ID running all the apps is root? I checked yesterday from a terminal and it's app_157 or something similar as standard.

Is it really a good idea rooting if this is the case - 1 app with a dodgy bit of code could to a lot of damage while running as root...?

If an app needs root permissions then the Superuser App will popup and let you decide if you want to allow it su permissions or not.

If you're unsure whether to root or not, I would leave it unrooted until a time that you want to do something that you need root for, then decide if you want to do it or not.
To be honest, I felt a lot less compelled to root this than my previous Android phones as I can do most of what I want out of the box.

Yup if you don't need root then there might not be any point. I have several apps that need su permissions so I must root!

Well I have WaveSecure on the phone, and apparently, to enable GPS remotely it needs root? For the moment I'm leaving GPS on and just making sure that no rogue app decides to start using it.. Will see how that goes first. :)

I must admit I haven't found a need to root mine yet, everything works just fine without it..

Anyone have GS2 with O2? When I go into about phone it states my number is unknown; also I don't seem to have the benchmarking software referred to in several reviews. Am I overlooking something obvious here or do O2 customise these phones for shipping?

god i've scratched mine twice already. no idea how...it's the only thing in my pocket etc etc :(

People keep saying its Gorilla glass you don't need one etc, I alway say its safer to put a screen protector on and its showing I was right, this is the 2nd that has scratched.

I know people won't want the case with it but the number below I purchased the case and it has a screen protector with it and it was a decent one as what bubbles I had under it came off easy, am sure there are plenty on the bay though, anyway it cost the mighty price of £2.95 for case and screen protector.

I thought there was a problem with mine as well, I could barely get 12 hours out of a full charge. But as soon as I updated to the new firmware it's now sitting on 70% after a day (light use). I'd definitely use something like android task killer, also I'd get rid of the samsung apps, especially the social app as it eats the battery.

Just been to manage applications and it won't let me uninstall the social app, only force stop.

When I go into Task manager it tells me which aps are running and all I have there is Widgetlocker.

However when I go into Settings > Applications > Running Services.

Theres about 20 odd things running. For example Wifi Sharing is stil ticking up the minutes and the WiFi is turned off on my phone.

Heres some screenshots I've taken which will hopeful help...

i ordered one two weeks ago...still not turned up :/

I think if you haven't got a protector from the moment you use your phone, then you need to go out and physically buy one from a shop. Yes, it will be a whole couple of quid extra... but id rather even pay an extra fiver than have my screen permanently scratched any day of the week. It's just common sense!

funnily enough i was going to pop out at lunch today and do just that. They are very small so it's not a big deal but annoying non the less!

mr tommo, it's the wifi sharing that's the problem I think, seen a few posts on XDA where it's been running for no reason causing drain on the battery, should be able to force close it from the applications settings, and then it shouldn't come back,

The other bits on your battery usage seem about right (screen, android os and android system are usually 1,2,3 on my phone)

wifi sharing always comes back for me
