****The Official Samsung Galaxy S II Thread***

This is 100% correct, I compared the signal strength to my HTC Desire and I get full bars all around my house but I get 1 bar or sometimes 3 bars in my house so yes there is an issue with the wi-fi signal with this phone.

It seems that samsung reduced the power of the wifi module to increase battery life. This is an assumption based on my upgrading the galaxy s amd galaxy tab from froyo to gingerbread.

Just received mine directly from T-Mobile (rather cheaply due to 50% friends and family discount). Gorgeous looking phone - bit of a step up from my G1! Any suggestions for the first things I should be doing with this bit of kit? The Samsung UI isn't the most pleasant...

Quick question (I am sure the answers are in this thread but there are too many posts to look through!).

If someone buys the phone on T-mob/O2/Vodafone (the 3 networks who offer this phone direct), The phone will have some sort of branding (be that boot screens, apps) and potential Sim locking.

If someone buys it offline (circa £450) or through a 3rd party company, they will get a "retail" phone, unlocked to any compatible GSM SIMS from any UK network.

The only difference between the 2 is software. I guess people in the 1st group have to wait for phone updates (fixes/patches/OS updates) when their provider tests and then releases them. People in the second group get these as soon as Samsung release them.

How does someone in the first group get the same software as the second group? i.e retail version of software and unlocked. Is there like a "vanilla" ROM that can be flashed over any network locked/branded handset. Also once you do this (assuming you don't want to faff around with other stuff) would you just get all updates at the same time as a retail boxed version?

btw, for anyone waiting from Orange (online/direct etc) I spoke to them today and they still say Early June for release (always the last!!), no idea who reliable this is, just going on what someone in the retentions department told me.

Yes once you root your device you will receive all the latest updates the same as the retail boxed version.
You need read this thread here

You have to flash an unbranded firmware, rooting by itself does'nt allow getting all the updates.

Sorry, I am still confused. Would I need to root, or flash a firmware/ROM (or is rooting a precursor to flashing other firmware/ROMS?)

Also, does flashing a ROM/Firmware replace any SIM locks, or is that done separately, i.e. does replacing a T-mob branded and locked handset with the unbranded firmware automatically remove the lock?

Flashing your ROM and rooting will probably stop any updates, especially with custom ROM's. Saying that, if you use a generic ROM you may get the generic ROM updates. Always best to flash yourself through an application like Odin though i find. Kies is awful.
Rooting is done after you have flashed your ROM. It basically gives total admin rights to the system. Otherwise known as SuperUser.
It will not remove the Network lock.

The GS2 has BIG issues with keeping a 3G signal whilst moving and noticeably worse Wi-Fi range.
For example - I used to be able to keep wi-fi connection whilst in my back garden no problem with my Desire but now its completely non existant on my GS2.
Hell even whilst sat on the crapper it is flakey which is less than 5 m away from the router...was never a prob with my desire.

That's weird - my S2 is the only device in the house that can keep a consistent wi-fi connection. My PC shrinks bandwidth to a dot, the laptop and BD player can't get connected at all and my Kindle can't pick up a signal when it's practically lying on the damn router, but my phone? No problems at all.

I've found the wifi 'issue' to be cosmetic only, though I do know there were a few faulty handsets where the wifi barely worked at all.

You'll still get official update notices if you flash stock firmwares via Odin even if rooted. As long as you flash the latest official firmware specific to that handsets product code. You could for instance flash the latest XEU firmware with an H3G product coded handset, which will work fine but it won't trigger the Kies FUS server response when a new firmware appears.

I have just installed Kaspersky mobile security (free with Barclays)

Anyone else tried it ?

Is it really needed ?

Doesn't seem to slow the phone down too much.

Kaspersky mobile seems to have lots of cool settings, such as locking your

phone, and tracking it via GPS etc if it's stolen.

No, its not needed.

Samsung have a system to track your phone, you don't need another one.

SOunds great. I've told my brother about it and he'll check it out.

Its not great, you don't need it.

Ok thanks Robbo, Are there no real virus threats for android ?

Is it just security company's saying we need their software when we really don't ?

Been looking for a good screen protector, I remember reading earlier in the

thread about some from Korea, are they any good and where can you get them

?

Thanks for any advice

edit - dont say Korea ;)

The chances of you having virus problems on Android are very slim, it might be an idea to have it if you install lots of dodgy crap directly via .apk's, but other than that its basically a waste of time.

I just tried out Samsung Dive out of curiosity at: http://v2.samsungdive.com/index.do

And it fails to locate my phone, just says "FAIL" while trying to find it. I see the Samsung Software Update icon flash in the bar on the phone for a few seconds before it says fail. Maybe it's not updated for KE7 yet or something?

It can't ring the phone either but it can retrieve call logs.

KE7 works here

Edit: must be the website as it has stopped working for me too. Was working ok the other day.

Edit2: Its stopped working on my SGS too. They must be having problems

Ah cool, so not me then :p

Prey is working fine, scarily fine too, I just did a locate and it put the Google Maps pointer above the room I am in, GPS lock inside the house is deadly accurate!

Neat.
