****The Official Samsung Galaxy S II Thread***

what advantage does adding my google account to my phone have?

Also im new to andriod, if i sync my phone with my twitter and facebook, im presuming this will automatically update them, is there any advantage to this over just accessing them through the app for f/b and twitter?

I think it should work using your ISP email, be interesting to see...

Kies is primarily used for firmware updates really, it can do music/video/pics as well but it's not great at it (loaded up my ~20Gb music collection which is hardly massive in this day and age and it struggled, easier to use the phone as mass storage device, or just winamp wireless sync) but yeah more for just firmware updates,

Most of the syncing you'll want is done automagically to the google cloud, assuming you have a suitable account, namely contacts/calendar/docs one big omission is text messages really, would be nice to have those synced up as well tbh
Couldn't figure out how to sync contacts with Google so in the end I had to use a .CSV file and sync that with Kies :(

Was a crude way but I have most of my contacts and the rest I will add manually.

But I have a lot to learn now.

as said before in the thread it allows you to sync mobile phone contacts online to google, so if you do fancy a new phone you dont need to bother syncing or writing down numbers etc you can just sign in with you gmail account and retrieve them. also you can access your gmail email although that's hardly a big deal.

Mine arrives tomorrow, havent had a new phone for some years now. Currently still have the samsung omnia!

I vowed never to purchase another samsung phone after the abysmal support that phone got but hopefully samsung wont have anything to do with the software side of things.

I havent read all 197 pages of this thread so sorry if this has been answered but - what things should I do first after getting the phone and what are the must have apps?

Im definitely looking for a VLC-like video players to watch movies/tv programmes on. My sumsung omnia does this quite well with coreplayer, something like that would be nice.

Debrand the phone if its from a mobile company so you can get updates when you want, root it and if necessary unlock it. Sync all ur contacts if you have a gmail account.

The player on the actual phone from what I have read will play pretty much any video so you don't need to download another. Grab K-9 email and handcent for sms messaging as imo their better than the standard phone apps.

Umm grab a task killer so you can kill apps etc

I have set up my ISP E-mail on the phone but as sonn as I use Outlook to get the mail to my computer it disappears from the phone, is there a way to keep the e-mail on the phone as well?

Sounds like you've setup Outlook to use POP3, this actually downloads the emails and removes them from the server, you want to use IMAP which mirrors what's on the server leaving the messages there, this way you can see all folders from both,

If however your ISP only supports POP (which is possible although I'd be surprised 'in this day and age' :p) you're screwed basically...

Alright I got my Galaxy today however I need some help with a few things since I'm new to Android and these new smartphones.

1. My battery is draining at an insane rate, is there a way to maximise the battery life?

2. Is there a way to create profiles? For example "silent" for meetings and a regular "general" profile for calls/texts/alerts ect

3. Are there any apps that are essential and will improve the performance?

4. How can I remove the weather and other widgets? I want a clean desktop

Strange, it used to work fine with my iPhone?

1. Turn screen brightness down, don't sync lots of apps every minute.
Careful on this one though, as your battery life will improve over the next two weeks since the battery isn't at its fullest yet. Not sure when it gets to its best, but mine is still improving after 2/3 weeks or so!

2. Not sure about this, since I just turn mine to silent using the rocker on the side. Maybe look up Tasker or similar.

3. Improve what performance?

4. Long press on anything on the "desktop" to remove them :)

Define insane.

Press and hold the power button.

There's an apps thread here I think.

4. How can I remove the weather and other widgets? I want a clean desktop

Press and hold the widget or icon you want to change then drag it to another place or put it in bin.

Download Appbrain and browse the various categories, it'll give you a whole lot of recommendations and save you searching the App thread here.

For any niche type apps, just ask but most are easily found browsing top lists etc

Regarding the video player, the in built one plays all my files fine. If it doesn't for you, then try something like Rockplayer

Just installed the second enhanced camera mod with higher bit rate on picture and sound, although the maker says it doesn't make much difference want to test for myself.

Done a quick test just now in 720p mode and the bit rate was 16795 so up from the stock 12k mark and 192 on audio will take some videos tomorrow to see if I can see any difference.

Use an app like Widgetlocker.

Any others you can recommend? I tried this yesterday and I did not really like it tbh so I returned it (within the 15 min trial!!). The only thing about the standard one that annoys me is the now playing "widget" is very small.

Tried Poweramp yesterday as well, uninstalled it today. Interface is a bit cluttered for my liking and the look of the whole app is quite garish, compared to the slick look of the Samsung Music player (albeit that does not have homescreen widgets and the lockscreen widget is teeeny).

Widgetlocker is the only (best) one and it's fully customisatble. 15minutes is nowhere near enough time to understand and appreciate it!

You are probably right, all I want is a decent lock screen music widget, and my reading around implies this is more dependant on the music player app, and not widget locker.

All the sliding left to right was a bit annoying. I will check out some screenshots and see if any widgetlocker layouts take my fancy. I am very new to android and whilst I relished the idea of customisation, now I realise how much can be customised, I am at a loss!

That's the only one I've used and not needed to look for others..

As for the Music app, I use PowerAMP so I can't really recommend anything :p but the maker of Launcher Pro made a replica of the Windows 7 Music app, which is actually quite nice.

It's in alpha, so might have a few bugs, but it's free atm!
