****The Official Samsung Galaxy S II Thread***

Whether you would take it over the iPhone 4 just comes down to Android vs iOS. So yes and no.

This phone is more powerful, but the iPhone software isn't really bogged down due to it not being dual core (nor is Android really).

Its a tough call, it depends what is most important to you in the phone really.

I hate Vodafone now lol, I really like the look of this phone but wanted it before I go to Rome on the 23rd. Iphones were just too much.. now they offer me one which ain't bad.

What does the iphone offer Robbo? I've had a samsung jet for 2 yrs, So know nothing about iphones, where as the gf has a HTC desire so I've messed with Android.

They can limit your use of Wifi? how are they going to do that? They must have thousands of iphones gathering dust if they're offering deals like that and they must have been told secretly the iphone 5 release date and someone's gone 'OMG, we've got 10,456 4's and we need rid of them by xx/xx! Quick, lets do a deal!

Well, they both ultimately do similar things at the end of the day. The main difference is that you can customise Android more, you can have widgets and so on like I'm sure you've seen on the Desire.

With the iPhone, you dont get widgets and home screens, its quite a bit simpler than that, but the functionality is mostly all there, and -

  • It is generally more stable

  • Has better PC integration with iTunes (which despite people moaning, does work fairly well and does a job that Android software cannot do yet)

  • Is superbly designed when it comes to the hardware compared to Samsung and HTC phones, this is obviously my opinion but it tends to be shared between the vast majority of people

  • The app store and game selection especially is considerably superior to Android even though Android is catching up a bit

  • The camera and video recording is currently in a class of its own, the only Android camera that can probably match it is the Xperia Arc, and I dont think the HD video is as good

  • Has the best overall quality screen (again, my opinion) and loudest speaker that I've heard

  • Has Apple customer support, which is absolutely second to none

I would rather the screen was a bit bigger but the size is still fine.

I personally believe at this moment in time it is the most complete phone package. The Galaxy S 2 has the potential to bridge the gap a lot, but that isn't going to be of much use to you.

I can tell you now that this post isn't going to go down very well in here as it is the Galaxy S 2 thread but I feel those points are all very fair and I'm not saying that Android is bad at all, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with the iPhone and it is very easy to understand why it is so popular (marketing aside).

The Samsung Jet is absolutely awful compared to any of the modern Android phones or the iPhone, so you're in for a treat either way.

One thing though, I'd try and get the 32GB model if you can. Especially if you are planning on putting any music/video on there or recording any HD video stuff.

Thank you very much Robbo :)

I was just going to say, Think I might see if I can push for a 32gb and then decide.

I suppose one way of looking at it is, I've always got the gf's HTC to mess with if something on android pops up I must have a go of.

Would also probs kill my desire of spanking £479 on an ipad 2. (or could make it worse :/ ) lol

Thanks again :)

Well, considering the iTunes sync between the iPad and iPhone stuff is so neat, you'll probably want an iPad 2 even more :p

Is that a mistake? 1GB WIFI and 1GB Data~?

It is just the retarded way phone companies sell things.

It probably means 1GB BT OpenZone Wifi, you get given a username and password when you join so you can get on easier when at McDonalds or wherever.

Quick question, Would you take this phone over the iphone 4?

I personally would, yes. The iPhone is a nice device and has the best selection of apps by far, but it also relies on its apps for everything. I much prefer the Android approach of getting phones with a decent amount of functionality without necessarily having to add (or at least use) apps to get it. Plus I much prefer the customisability of Android, it's nice to be able to have it set up how you want, rather than how the manufacturer dictates.

The Galaxy S II looks like it's going to be a very impressive handset, and as petty as it sounds, the fact that it's new and not an iPhone would probably be enough to win me over anyway.

Hopefully HTC will show their offerings tomorrow at the London event then I'll decide either a HTC or this monster of a phone! Hope this Samsung doesn't come with a locked bootloader. I'll miss the notification light though having come from a Blackberry to a DHD with lights as well.

i'm shocked by robbo's post as the comparison is between a phone yet to be released and one that came out a year ago iirc, yet the iphone is still a top contender. i don't doubt what's been said both will be excellent phones and i'll happily stick with android for plenty of reasons, i just wish they'd get a move on and release top of the range phones a bit quicker. ip5 will be out soon i guess and then it sounds like we'll have to wait a year or so until something competes with it's hardware/

He asked about the upsides to the iPhone as he can't wait for the Galaxy S 2, so what I wrote is compared to current devices!

Read it again :p

Well we all know HTC will be flagging their Sensation offering. But i'll still take the Samsung over the Sensation.

In his defence there are only really 2.5 comments that are a bit silly without having seen/used an SGS2:

Obviously screen, and to a certain extent build quality is opinion, the other points I've removed are more android specific, but camera and speaker you can't really comment on until you've used the phone, or at least seen a decent review, neither of which are available afaik.

I do disagree with him on some things (primarily screen size, I personally wouldn't consider a phone with such a 'small' screen, high dpi or not) but ultimately I thought it was a reasonably 'fair' list...

I do want this phone though, roll on the end of the month

He posted in the Galaxy S 2 thread, comparing it to current phones is ridiculous, might as well compare it to a HTC Magic and say it's several leagues above, that'd be just as useful :p

I know that, but he can't wait for this to be released as he is going away, so that has no relevance!

He just asked a question and I answered him :p

Calm down mate :)

Someone did directly ask him for a sort of comparison with a current phone (Iphone 4)

I'm in a similar boat with my contract that will end next month so looking to see what HTC officially offer up tomorrow.

If it's nothing spectacular, then I guess It'll be this BEAST of a phone.

I'm calm thanks :p

It's just that when I read his post I read it to be wanting a comparison of the iPhone4 to what is known of the SGS2, not a comparison of the iPhone4 Vs <a random current android phone>

And the thing is if you remove a few unknowns from Robbo's post that's actually a reasonably good list, so I can see how myself and some others got the wrong end of the stick and assumed that Robbo was making assumptions about the SGS2,

Maybe Robbo could've posted a more specific 'this is iPhone 4 Vs HTC Desire/Android' bit, but ultimately it doesn't matter anymore, he's made it quite clear :p

Well I own an iphone 4, its a nice piece of kit. Well made, does what I need it to do. However, there is no real ability to tinker, make it your own so to speak. I think I'll be changing come next year to an android device when my contract is up. Just depends on how android progresses. It's came a long way since I tried a desire so I have high hopes. :)
