****The Official Samsung Galaxy S II Thread***

^^ But get Apps Organizer instead.

Means you can have nicer-looking icons instead of folders (and different icons for different apps - e.g. Tools, Media, Work, etc.), and you can download small jpgs and use them as icons. You can easily add and remove apps and they will stay sorted by alphabetical order, or with your starred apps at the top.

Oh, it's free as well. Folder Organizer will let you organize shortcuts, contacts, bookmarks, etc, as well as apps (costs about a quid).

Just ordered my s2 yesterday to arrive Monday. Coming from a Dan Francisco so should be a nice upgrade! Will be checking this thread out in more detail but I'm on nodaco forum and they are usually on the money with new roms etc too.

Modaco may have been the best forum for keeping up with the San Francisco/Blade, but their s2 forum is rather lacking. Head over to the XDA forums for all your S2 rom needs, already a few posted there in the Android Development section. Enjoy the new phone, certainly is a nice upgrade from the San Fran :)

Cool ive been on the xda a few times but not a member like I am on modaco years the SF support is good on M but the s2 forum was a bit quiet when I chcecked. Shame as i learnt to root, and install custom roms on there.

Having flash and a capable CPU is going to be sweet. Looking forward to it. Wanted a galaxy since I saw my mates but waited it out for the new one thankfully.

No. Download mode:
Press and hold volume down+home key and then press power button and keep holding all three.

thanks mate. now freshly rooted with titanium pro installed and the three Samsung hub apps frozen. root virginity lost!
now to see what else is in store :)

1. Full access to the pre installed software. (remove/freeze bundled software you don't want/need)
2. Overclock/undervolt. (make your phone faster/use less power)
3. Backup your data from all apps. (settings, game saves etc)
4. Buy and play nVidia 'exclusive' games.
5. Fully customised your UI (status bar/fonts etc)

+ many more without getting into custom ROMs.

Just wondering what is the point of rooting?

Well for starters, rooting gives YOU full access to system files and more control over YOUR phone. For instance, you can add customised themes, change your recovery image, modify your boot-loader, and even add stuff to make your phone more efficient.

After rooting, you can then install special apps on your phone such as Superuser, which allows certain apps to access root privileges and management of these privileges. Also with Superuser access, you can install apps to control the start up of your apps, limit the running of certain memory draining apps (often referred to as freezing) to increase battery life and responsiveness. For example during early Android days, people used this to install tethering apps.

The main advantage for me is that there are also tools only through rooting where you can backup your system files, settings and even your whole ROM onto your SD card, such as Titanium Backup or a backup through the recovery mode (There are others too).

Also, as mentioned earlier you can install customised themes onto your phone. Not to mention the fact about custom ROMs, kernels, and other files. These can greatly speed up your phone, change the look and feel and much more.

Hope that helps.

Hmm looks like I have to root to get Cifsmanager to work.

Just one question though - if I root does it delete any apps or settings thats Ive already put on the phone?

what are you trying to do with cifsmanager?

Also do any of you have Opera Mobile installed at all? As I can't play any of the videos on the bbc news site even though flash is enabled in opera?

Opera Mobile doesn't support flash yet, actually not sure just tried it and the option is there for flash.

^^ I have seen the Kernel for that but not going to try it myself, I doubt very much you will notice any difference in anything other than benchmarks.

Map network folders onto the phone so I can play music and videos from my PC over wifi without having to download them onto the phone.

I suggest you setup subsonic server on your PC then download the subsonic app. Works great for streaming music!

Do the dual core chips not OC well then or something? I mean, I run more than a 100% overclock on my milestone without a single issue, so 300mhz doesn't seem like much! aha
