****The Official Samsung Galaxy S II Thread***

Which method of rooting is everyone using?

Seems to be about 3 for the SGS2.

I previously just used the one click root app from off the market (no longer there) on my SGS, but i wasn't able to get into download mode on that.

Did see a program called gingerbreaker on youtube rooting a SGS2, but the XDA thread says this doesn't normally work on the SGS2.

Phone crashed 3 times within a 16 hour period of having widget locker... turn screen off and then it instantly wouldnt turn back on...

Looking at the battery stats it definately had crashed too as there could see a gap in signal/wifi

Since removing it my phone hasnt crashed in the last 24 hours (and hadnt before that point)

Still early days to make that conclusion yet... but for now i dont plan on using it!

Anyone know a different stable alternative lock screen?

Thanks (:

Been using widget locker for a month now and can report no crashes/ reboots/ taking battery out, in fact never had a crash yet.

I could not figure out how to dial a number as there are 5 tabs in Contacts and the left one with the keypad was hidden so what I did was add a contact just to call onetime, me is a dumbass :o

Also coming from an iPhone I am sometimes figuring out how to change stuff and go back as I forget there are two more buttons on the phone.

I did exactly the same thing, I'd scrolled that menu along somehow, then ended up adding contacts to make calls. It took me 20 mins before I managed to call someone. My mates in the pub were laughing at the fact that I'd spent £500 on a phone but couldn't make a phonecall... :o

I didnt know you could do that:rolleyes: lol

I keep pressing the middle button twice and speaking to the phone instead :D

That will be me too. :) Mind you I'll make sure I know hoe to use it before doing so in front of mates :D

Guys, I rooted using this guide:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399

Meaning I have the Yellow "!" symbol at boot. Does that actually matter? I couldnt care less if its there tbh. I see that some guides reccommend you flash over with a stock kernel once rooted. Why do you need to do this?

Oh yes, I'm new to android, so while I have Titanium backup now, I dont actually know what apps belong to stock android and whats crap thats been put on the phone from Samsung. Does anyone care to list the Samsung ones?

Happily my phone seems to have not been touched by T-Mobile at all (I bought it from a 3rd party site) so it doesnt have any of their branding on it, and is SIM unlocked.

The portrait keyboard is a bit figety for me (I'm used to full qwerty, hardware keyboard). Is there any way to change it? Make it a little biggerr or something? I'm not sure what it is that doesn't sit right with me yet tbh. The Landscape form is fine, using thumbs to type.

The task manager is a bit ****. This RAM manager thing.....it doesnt actually show you what you're closing. :/ Is there an alternative task manager that does show you different items in RAM manager and let you close them individually?

Finally, its irratatingly fast when browsing the internet. If I clicked on a wrong link with my N900, it would at least give me a couple of seconds before opening it to change my mind, whereas this thing has it open before I've even noticed I've clicked the wrong thing!! :o :D

Also, can you access terminal/Xterm?

There's no need for managing tasks on Android, the stock one is just a basic one and doesn't affect anything really.

The exclamation mark at boot just denotes you're using a non stock kernel. It doesn't affect anything either other than offending ones vision during boot.

You could remove it by installing the CWM kernel and following the steps in the 2nd post to remove it permanently and get a proper recovery in the process or just flash a stock kernel for the ROM you're using.

I can recommend either Swiftkey or Thumb Keyboard, you do have to pay but imo worth it. I am currently using Thumb keyboard as Swiftkey doesn't have cursor keys and I find these very useful. You can also alter the height etc with thumb keyboard which is great.

For a cool fade in effect on video recordings simply cover the lens for a few seconds then quickly move your hand away. Because the metering is so smooth it gives the video a cool fade in from white effect.

You'll have to do fade outs in software though, obviously :p

the standard pattern lock screen works best IMO.
Yeah ive just gone for this option now! I hated the whole pulling the image to the side without it..

Yeah i know most post suggests that its stable... but my phone still hasnt crashed since removing it and ive just been at home playing with it a lot.

Only change has been that ive removed widget locker :/ 8 of the 3 crashes in 16 hours was sleep too! so really was happening every 3 hours ish before..

Just seems to point that way aswell as it would happen literally in a few seconds.. lock screen pick it back up to play some more and it wont respond D:

So I want to switch to a new ROM but am not sure which is better the Litening rom or the Villain rom? I am leaning toward the litening rom as it has the blue theme which i prefer, can't seem to find screenshots of what the villian rom looks like though :(

So which one should I use?

I was on AngeloROM but have switched to Villain rom, the only ROM I've used where the Android OS usage is actually lower than the others in my experience!

Thumb keyboard is excellent, been trialling out Smart Keyboard has the arrows as well! and is just as good (Got use to them from HTC keyboard).

Are you sure i heard that if you do this it will decrease the life of the battery causing the charge to not be held as long as charging from say 10% to 80% etc?

There are lots and lots of battery stories, some say its better to keep charging it as letting it drain can cause issues, other things say the opposite.

I've tried all the different ways on lots of different phones and never noticed much of a difference.

hey peeps. iv ordered this phone and this will be my first contract phone, and first smartphone, coming from a history of using payg on good old nokias. is there any must do hacks or tweaks that make the phone infinitely better? what is rooting a phone? what are the benefits? what is a rom?

sorry for being noobish. if there is a quick info page please direct me to it.
