Is that a snapdragon vers of the ultra becuase as far as im aware the snapdragon does not even have the cmaera fixes yet. it is only the sammy one.

I would not hold out for any massive improvement because after yesterdays update mine was still hunting for fun, couldn’t even scan a lottery ticket in the app.
However as that YT dude is UK based there’s a good chance he has the Exynos.

What is so bad about it? Just curious - thanks.

4 main gripes for me:

1: The fingerprint scanner is a hot pile of steaming garbage and unfit for a £1000+ phone. The rear scanner on the Note 9 is 100x better in every way.
2: The Auto Focus hunting on the camera is just not funny, sometimes your shot is in focus sometimes it isn’t. It cant seem to find simple targets.
3: The image processing is so over sharpened there are visible sharpening artifacts in the images. It cant be turned down. Put them on a screen bigger than you phone any they slap you in the face.
4: The battery life tanks doing certain things, web browsing seems to destroy it at least on mine.

Hey guys, I recently purchased a S20 Ultra and am finding it a great phone. However, I've come to realize they've removed the encryption on boot-up feature which I was really looking to use for privacy reasons. I went and asked on the live chat on the Samsung website, and they said it was removed and I would have to "use a third party app or rom" to be able to get back this feature.

I'm now looking into installing a custom ROM and haven't done for many years so I need a bit of help with this, is it just me being stupid, or is there no custom ROM's really released for the S20 Ultra yet? As I've not been able to find one whilst searching.

Also I was curious to if anyone knew a easier way or setting that I could activate that I might have not noticed to be able to activate boot up/start up encryption for the S20?

Sorry to hear your having problems buddy. but i have to say watching countless youtube vids and reading a lot of posts there is a lot of happy people,
At the end of the day it does not matter what i say or any you tuber reviewer says, its your money you have spent. if your not happy buddy return it. but if i think if you look there are both comments on forums and in youtube comments of both people who are happy or say issues does not effect them personalty ie they are either not bothered or its not happening on there device.

i have not ever had that prob , it is instant for myself. but then i have turned up the sensitivity option for when you have a screen protector on and have entered the maximum amount of finger prints. Also i found my note 9 sensor to be placed in a awkward place . and because it was on the back lots of people had problems with scratching it. and the protective top layer cumming off.

2: The Auto Focus hunting on the camera is just not funny, sometimes your shot is in focus sometimes it isn’t. It cant seem to find simple targets.
i have not experienced this myself but again lots of people have and also on the flip side lots of people have not just read the comments for the firmware updates you tube vids lots of people are saying they do not have this problem, and yes even the uk version.

A few youtubers again have mentioned this again if you read the comments, some people prefer it or turn of certain features and actually on some you tube reviews the phone trades blows. and actually the ultra gets praise for the pictures when they zoom in ect.

4: The battery life tanks doing certain things, web browsing seems to destroy it at least on mine.

I agree the battery is not perfect but having said that it is the same for other phones until they release firmware to fix it as i have previously said i had this issue on my note 9 until they started to fix it with firmware optimisations, I have faith perhaps misplaced but i really think most if not all the isues will be fixed. i think once they have got the camera sorted they will work on battery optimisations.

will that not break knox thus break your warranty ? xda forums would be best for that also btw

My custom ROM days are well and truly behind me but why on earth would anyone spend upwards of £1200 on a phone to install a custom ROM!?

Because it's missing a feature I thought it came with?
Surely at that price no one should have to tinker with their device to such an extent? The downsides must outweigh any possible advantage? No Google/Samsung pay to think of one. What about banking apps?

More to the point what on earth are you so hell bent on keeping encrypted!?

If you're posting about it on here the government are not interested in you I'd wager.

I'm more amused about why people think I'm hell bent on it and criticized me for wanting to encrypt my phone lol, people don't have to use VPN's but look how mainstream they are now and how many people choose to encrypt they're data traffic these days, not just nerds but all different types of people. It's the argument of why would you just want to leave your data unsecured if there's a way to secure it?

Also I never said I was worried about the government in any post, I was referring to if I was to lose my phone whilst out and I have sensitive work documents on it.

 Please don't find my nudes or dick pics! Nah in all honesty, couldn't give a **** about porn, it's actual sensitive work documents as I bought my S20 as a business phone to work from :D.

Well there are multiple ways of doing such things. I have sensitive financial information on mine, NDA contracts as well as other stuff and take the below steps which our firms legal and security team have signed off as good to go.

What I do...
1: Use a VPN to encrypt your traffic. I use NordVPN but there many others of course.
2: If you have a Micro SD card, in security options make sure encryption is enabled for it. Save all files you download there.
3: Use biometrics backed up with a PIN, not a pattern.
4: In security settings / other settings make sure Strong Protection is turn on. This isn't the same as full phone encrypt but makes sure the phone boots locked for a starter.
5: Make sure in your account google/find, the phone is registered. This then allows you to remote wipe which I actually had to last November and it worked brilliantly.

Also though have to say I'm not sure why you think random dudes you don't know on an internet forum (Xda), create and baking into their Rom's whatever they like that also need root access is in anyway secure. There is a reason banks dont allow them. I'm not saying anything shady is going on most of the time but the risk is very real in my mind, certainly no less so than taking a few sensible measures that take about 5 minutes to setup and dont really impact the user experience at all.

I'm looking at switching my P20 Pro for an S20 Ultra when my contract is up next month.

What are the updates like on Samsung these days? On my old S7 Edge they were months and months behind Google and One+, even with stock EU firmware.

Are they better now?

S20 supports file based encryption. See here https://support.samsungknox.com/hc/...-encryption-FBE-and-full-disk-encryption-FDE-

Security updates are hugely improved, only days behind Google usually. OS updates however not as quick but certainly not the worst. They seem to have made big strides in the security updates at least.

Certainly much better than Huawei.

if you look closely all those people happy with their s20 have the snapdragon version. (their American accents is a giveaway).

Quidco gave me a 20% discount code for S20 series of phones on Samsung's site. Apparently expires in 3 days. Code is SAMSUNG20. However when I tried to use it, it said it's already expired. Any other ideas about getting a discount guys?

Samsung had a sale on over the easter weekend, which has now expired. The only S20-series phone the code worked on was the S20+ in blue, so if you wanted anything else, you didn't miss out.

Failing that, Samsung have a 15% discount on for students or blue light card holders that works on all phones (though trade in values are reduced and you can't go on the upgrade program if using the discount). If you know someone who qualifies, that'll bring the price down. Also 5% cashback through Quidco at the moment, which should stack.
