*** The Official Steam Deck Thread ***

Thinking of getting the Oled version. Not the 1tb though.

Not gamed for approx 8 years or so as i not had a pc or console since then.

I do have a steam account from back then which i can still access.

Thing is, i was always a keyboard and mouse gamer. Tried Playstation controller some time ago on a friends and struggled aiming when shooting..lol

I used to play JC3 and GTAV. Miss those games. How are they on the deck? I like driving games too.

I am a complete noob when it comes to the SD. I have checked out youtube looking at reviews of them.

Any advice appreciated...
GTAV runs well. No idea about JC3. I'm the same, but given that I don't play much mp anymore I've given myself to the sticks / pads / gyro. It's easier than you think, but if nothing is stopping you from using a desk I'd just stick with that tbh.

Remember you can connect a controller, keyboard and mouse (and also a monitor) to your SD if you want. Obviously takes up more space but far less than a full system

I got a 75% wireless keyboard and wireless mouse just to go with my Steam Deck. With a tablet stand balanced on my chest I can lay back on my sofa and play fps games with m&kb like a good un. All fits in a 15" laptop bag when I go anywhere.

Use the ProtonDB website to check compatibility - JC3 and GTAV are both rated Gold, so can be expected to work well.

87% of Steam's top 1000 titles are playable on Deck according to ProtonDB. 3% run but aren't fully playable, 4% don't run at all (often due to anti-cheat), and the remaining 6% have no data (probably mostly software like Wallpaper Engine and 3D Mark).

I barely use my laptop these days. Unless it's a strategy game, if it runs on Deck I'd rather play on Deck. So basically my laptop is used for Total War Warhammer & Flight Simulator. I may as well just sell it at this point...

Had my first major issue with the Steam Deck. Was moving a large game from the SD card to the internal SSD. It was taking a long while so I left it to do overnight. Next morning I saw it went to sleep, woke it up and said it successfully moved the game. But then I noticed for some reason in the download list it was downloading the game again. Across the Steam UI I also noticed broken images suddenly. Tried rebooting the Steam Deck, but then it got stuck on the boot logo. The battery storage mode trick didn't work, using "..." + power button to try a previous image also got stuck. I also saw try using fsck from the recovery image (it did find errors in the esp folder) but it didn't work either.

In the end I decided to just reinstall SteamOS. Luckily I was able to back up my personal files via the recovery image to an external storage, but it'll be a pain to set up everything again. One weird thing I did notice however was after applying the fresh image, rebooting the Deck made it stuck on a black screen. Force shutting down or shutting down from within Steam and then turning on was fine. Seems to have disappeared after I had the bare basics set up though, it's now behaving normally.

In the early days when I was setting up my deck how I wanted and messing around - a lot - I ended up having to nuke and reinstall Steam OS several times. It got really annoying to get everything back up and running so I looked into doing full system image backups, which you can do with clonezilla. See the guide below. It works as I had to do a full restore once from one of my backups and it all went ok. It looks complicated and it kind of is, but it's doable and worth it if you're a tweaker....

yeah, although it cannot play pc games they wont wanna release something that has worse specs.

Don't think there is a correlation between Switch 2 and Steam Deck 2 release date.

Steam Deck 2 won't be out for 1-2 years based on all the data out there.

I dont use my deck much really, but ive noticed for a while that it wont run an update.

checking now, it seems to be stuck on:
OS Name - "SteamOS Holo"
OS Codename - Holo
OS Variant - Steamdeck-rc
OS Version - 3.4.10
OS Build - 20230831.1
Kernel Version - 5.13.0-valve37-1-neptune
Bios Version - F7A0113

This seems like its old... i cant get it to update whatever i try. Changing the update channel to Beta didnt help.

Any advice?

Thanks

If you don't mind wiping the Deck you could reinstall SteamOS (current recovery image is based on 3.5.7): https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/1B71-EDF2-EB6D-2BB3

On the other hand ever since I did a complete wipe I have noticed my Deck is running better than before (example, before pressing the power button to sleep didn't always work, but now it works 100% of the time). Makes me curious if the earlier tinkering I did actually eventually caused it to get stuck on boot.

I've been playing Minecraft on my phone mounted to an Xbox controller just to see if I'm enjoying mobile gaming, and I've been surprised at how relaxing it is. I decided to pull the trigger on a 512GB OLED version and looking forward to seeing what it can do. :)
