Yep memory prices are crazy, no signs of them lowering, still seem to be going up. :(
I am sure other mainboards will improve but memory overclocking wise the CH6 is the champion on that front.
i was hoping to be picking up 16gb of 3600c15 or 16 b die for £100 at this point and instead they are closing on £200 :( tbh i dont even want a 16gb kit, but you cant get b die sticks that are less than 8gb per stick :( for benching i just need a lower gb dual channel kit that overclocks really well, kind of like the PSC 2x2gb kits of ddr3 did. 2600 8-12-8 on 1.9v ish with ivy and haswell chips.

As for a board, the ch6 is the best atm, but i can see it beening surpassed in the near future by a formula or extreme board from asus or maybe a gigabyte soc champion. i would prefer waiting for something like those with maybe a plx chip so i can run 3-4 cards.

Are there any massive disadvantages to a 4Gb card over an 8Gb card at 1080p?

I think I could squeeze one in my case.
I think the RAM is a little quicker on the 8GB version.

I am using 1080p and trying to decide on 4/8GB also.

I figure I will wait for the 5 series hoping they will be a little cheaper....

The best time to buy one is just before the rx500 series come out. They tend to clear the stock, but any left go back up in price right after the new cards come out so people buy the newer one.

Does anyone else have an MSI Gaming X RX480 8GB variant which I could compare temps with?

After roughly an hour or 2 of gaming on Siege 6 my card was showing as 85 degrees Celsius surely this is not right? I can also hear my fans over my headphones. I thought these cards were meant to be the best cooling cards out the box?

yeah that doesn't sound right :/
Increased power limit and left voltage on auto
OK

Got my XFX GTR from the MM on Friday so I've been tinkering with it over the weekend. Immediately impressed with the cooler - at stock it was hovering in the high 60s during gaming (FreeSync so 99+% GPU usage) with the fan set at 50%. I can hear a very slight difference in noise levels between 35% and 50% but I almost never notice it even changing between the two states. I'm not sure what the actual RPM is since different apps report it differently - Wattman reckons it's just over 2000 RPM even though its fan speed slider says the maximum is 3500 RPM. I couldn't hear the difference between 35% and anything lower (case fans are louder) so I set a fan curve in Afterburner as follows:

0-45 °C: 0%
45-60 °C: 35%
60-75 °C: 50%
75-85 °C: 75%
85+ °C: 100%

The last two are just for safety in summer since I've never seen it hit 70 °C yet. In Wattman I change the core voltage of the top 3 power states from the stock 1130 mV to 1070 mV, then boosted the top power state from 1280 MHz to 1300 Mhz. The card now hovers in the low 60s during gaming, again with the fan at a barely-audible 50%. I wanted to try using Wattman for everything rather than using two apps but its fan settings are crap compared to Afterburner so I'm using that for the fan curve. Bit annoying since I needed to explicitly set one or two things in Afterburner to get it to play nicely with Wattman.

Overall very happy, especially seeing as my ancient system doesn't appear to be bottlenecking at all. Not sure how much effort I'm willing to spend trying to find the lowest voltage it's stable with - I did try 1060 mV which was absolutely fine until the Radeon driver crashed whilst a game was minimised, hence I've stuck with 1070 for now. Not sure if that was even related to the undervolt at all since I'd have thought it wouldn't be in a high power state with the game minimised but I could be wrong. With the amount of thermal headroom I could probably also get the clocks higher but it's such a big improvement on my previous R9 270 (which hated even a 10 MHz overclock on the VRAM or core) that I don't feel the need to. My old card was noisier and hotter too - it'd hover in the mid-70s but it was much louder compared to this RX 480 and I'd notice every time the fan ramped up or down.

One thing I haven't touched is VRAM voltage or frequency. Is it worth trying to increase it to say 1100-1150 MHz at stock voltage? I've picked up bits and pieces from various forums suggesting that VRAM speed can make a bigger difference to performance than core speed at higher resolutions (I use 1440p) and that the VRAM voltage makes no difference to overall temperatures. Is that accurate?

Finally got round to posting my card. It has been installed for a few weeks now but haven't really done any proper testing or altered any settings yet.

To get on the Roll of Honour all you have to do is post a pic with your user name on it of your RX 480.

Can anyone with the Asus Dual OC tell me if they get anywhere near the 1.3 ghz core clock speed? Out of the box, in fire-strike for example (but also in games), i'm consistently getting less than 1.1 ghz.

I need to up the power target massively just to get the advertised core clock. Is this normal?

It's seems like the XFX GTR XXX (which i know is much more expensive) can peg a reliable 1266 mhz with no dips at stock.

Would be interested to know how other peoples cards behave at stock.

I have to actually underclock my Dual OC to 1205mhz and decrease temp rate to get it stable, otherwise it crashes a lot. Definitely just the card as an old R9 290 I have works just fine, as does a 4GB RX480.

yes you have to up the power target to get it to run at boost speeds.

I never got the Asus to a point I was happy with so now own a XFX GTR XXX instead. Consistently 1288 out of the box with stock settings and quiet, would recommend. :)

The black edition looks even better.

Different price bracket though.

Dude undervolt that bad boy if you don't plan on overclocking. Like I said above, mine works at 1070 mV (maybe lower) and that drops temperatures by over 5 °C. Also 1300 MHz is a much rounder number than 1288 MHz. :p

Hi all, is there a guide on how to undervolt these anywhere, and change fan profiles, what app or apps are people using to keep settings permanent as opposed to losing them upon a reboot?
My devil runs a little warm so if I can undervolt and retain full boost clocks that would be great.

I'm not really bothered about overclocking it beyond the factory OC. But would like to tweak it a bit.

Also I don't really understand the whole power target thing.

Thanks.
