The Tesla Thread

What's the deal with car insurance? I've done a comparison between a standard range M3 and the BMW M50. Tesla is a whopping £300 extra a year (£800 for the year vs £500).

This was with Admiral.

Expensive, hard to obtain parts and the Model 3 doesn’t have a Thatcham approved alarm system.

Insurance is one of those ‘your mileage may vary’ kind of things.

I was ready to get lubed up after being allocated a car to collect the following week and I was pleasantly surprised that direct line wanted about £150 swap to the SR+ from a 11 year old diesel hatch. When I worked it out it was about £450 for the year.

I might check out direct line then

:edit: or maybe I won't

I paid £475 with Hastings Direct in September last year. I've seen some mental quotes and heard that some insurers won't even offer renewals for existing Tesla customers.

Direct Line were £lol for me.

I tried this and they won't provide a quote online without the registration number is what I was told. Think you have to call up but I haven't been bothered yet.

Not happy with my quotes at the moment, they are like ~£750.

My first quote was before I had my reg. I then had to call up to get the reg added to the quote as it wouldn't let me add it online, just kept looping.

Thanks, they are quoting me £660 for standard range and £930 for performance. Ouch!

Different stokes for different folks. My premium this year was £380 which I thought was very reasonable considering it's still a £39k car on the second hand market.

Mine is about double the price of my outgoing AMG Mercedes C63. I'm old with no points, but with one theft claim on my record, and I doubt a Model 3 is anywhere near as desirable as a German car you can easily sell parts from

Is theft a bit deal with tesla? I always thought they had a thatcem, might have to check what I put down on my policy:(.

There was a few instances years back, but they updated the software. Enable PIN to drive and 2-factor authentication. Be careful if sharing username/password/API keys.

Thatcham are very slow to evolve. Tesla will loose marks for missing locking wheel nuts and having non conventional security. Consider my Golf would have all been Thatcham approved but was open to relay attacks.

As far as I’m aware the usual relay attack doesn’t work with a Model 3/Y but as the above person said, lacks basics like locking wheel nuts.

There are new vectors for attack that you have to be wary of though due to the App access and capabilities.

Phishing and social engineering over the web are attack vectors that have never really existed for cars before but they are now very real threats. As evidenced by the amount of ‘normal’ people are scammed each year, it’s pretty evident many don’t have good enough awareness of the issues.

Looks like mine has been drastically brought forward from November and is now this week! Problem is I'm now not prepared..

For those that have these through their companies did anyone put the order through as a 'Personal' purchase initially? I have because I wasn't 100% on what I was doing and the business order option didn't make sense with a required VAT number field. I'm hoping someone had a similar experience that they can share.

Did some googling an its got a basic rating. Fwiw with insurance, I'm with Churchill through quidco so got 40 quid cashback so was about 310 after that. Don't think they ask about the type of alarm, however my excess is 850.

Phishing aside you'd have to be really stupid to try and steal or break into a Tesla. That or not have any idea that the thing is covered in cameras, inside and out, tracked, remotely accessible etc.

Phishing would fall into the remit of organised crime and you can bet that if they want any car then they'll get it.
