The Tesla Thread

Phishing aside you'd have to be really stupid to try and steal or break into a Tesla. That or not have any idea that the thing is covered in cameras, inside and out, tracked, remotely accessible etc.

Phishing would fall into the remit of organised crime and you can bet that if they want any car then they'll get it.
Yea, not sure there's much point stealing one to order, surely most of the features rely on bring connected to tesla I.e. tracked.

Wouldn’t a simple cell phone jammer render that functionality fairly mute. Certainly long enough to permanently disable it.

The car is going to be worth more in bits than it is fully assembled at the end of the day.

Looks like mine has been drastically brought forward from November and is now this week! Problem is I'm now not prepared..

For those that have these through their companies did anyone put the order through as a 'Personal' purchase initially? I have because I wasn't 100% on what I was doing and the business order option didn't make sense with a required VAT number field. I'm hoping someone had a similar experience that they can share.

Just put AB123456 in VAT number bit - done it for both my business purchases (I'm not VAT registered as Ltd)

You potentially will have issues as the V5 is personal and then if you try and transfer to the business, your business will need to purchase it from you, V5 will need updated, insurance will need updated as registered owner etc

Phishing was generally the Model S as they had a keyfob...

Whilst you can get a keyfob for M3, it's not really worth it and phishing on M3 is almost impossible as the cards/phone key (bluetooth) is usually used. Then P2D etc

We were more thinking phishing via the web to get app access rather than a typical relay attack on the key fob.

If you get app access, you can locate and take the car without the keys. Chuck in a cell phone jammer or physically disable the data connection once you take it and the car can’t be tracked.

true i guess - but I guess the "not knowing" how much charge/distance you'll get away from the house you nick it from might put people off stealing them :p:p

2 factor authentication solves the phishing issue for the most part

It does indeed but that’s on the assumption that people use it as it’s not on by default and many just people don’t, even those that are more tech aware. I’d hate to think what the take up rate actually is but I fully expect it’s very low, probably under 30%.

Just look at the 2FA thread for this forum.

In my opinion it should be on by default, but as you say, the lack of technical knowledge really hinders the take-up. One of the guys picking his car up the same day as me didn’t even have the app installed on his phone, wanted ti do everything with the keycard and the in-car display. Each to their own I guess.

the mach-e system is nice with the touch pad on the B pillar - 3rd world problem , but if you go the beach/running and can't/don't want to be carrying a phone/keys/card,
currently just have to hope the thief doesn't know which car you got out of when you cache keys in your shoes.

Thanks! I can't now as it's already ordered with a date of Monday at the moment. Need to really push that back if possible anyway.

Will give them a call and see if they can just change it and the invoice to state the company etc.

Driving the latest Battery Electric Vehicles is not a '3rd world' problem.

To be fair, the app doesn't seem to activate for most people until a day or so after accepting the car, that's what happened to me and it seems similar on the UK model 3 Facebook group.

Indeed. My app went live almost immediately after signing for the car… put it this way, by the time I checked over the car and sat in the driver seat I was able to setup the key.
