The Tesla Thread

I was under the impression the line under dual motor was red for performance models
It is :)

Not a fan of the stick on front plates. It works on the white model as it blends with the bumper, but it just looks “odd” on the coloured cars.

Love the red though. I kept flipping back and forth on my order and still May switch to red… just worried I’d get bored of it.

I currently think the vinyl plate looks great, however I’ve read that there’s potential issues with car-park based ANPR systems, and I’m also concerned that it might look tatty quickly, we’ll see.

I’ve got a short “normal” plate that can go on if needs be, but I’ll have to cut down the original backing plate so that it is hidden behind the shorter plate. I didn’t really want to do this, I’d rather keep all the original parts for if I need to re-fit the original plates in the future.

I’ve had my plates stuck on with Velcro which allowed me to ditch the outer frame and mount them on the original plastic bumper piece. There’s pics in this thread.

Put them back to stock now as I’ve ordered a replacement car and Jesus h it was hard to remove the Velcro from the plates. Safe to say they’d have easily lasted the life of the car.

That’s what I was looking at, but as my numberplate is shorter (6-digit plate size) the plate isn’t wide enough to cover the original plastic mounting plate. I’d have to cut that down to make it less wide.

I always use 3M dual-lock to attach my plates, great stuff!

Just a randomish thought I had. When I charge my car (performance) to 90% I get an estimated range of 250 miles. How do I compare this to the as new value (I.e. is there just a value to use), as the 350 miles or whatever rhe "official" range is, is just rubbish imo.

The "official" range as you say is exactly that, under lab conditions etc, the same as MPG for ICE cars. It's for comparison, not real world.

If you've only just realised that then I'm sorry.

My car is currently sat at 90% and the energy display is predicting 265 miles or there abouts.

It depends on the journey, the conditions and how you drive too. The range is unique to everyone.

The range indicator on the Screen which was based around the EPA consumption I think was supposed to be 254 miles for my 2019 SR+ but has never shown more than 232 miles at 100%. Driving it for over 2 years the range has typically been 180 to 240 miles from cold to warm weather. Probably half of that being 70 mph dual carriageway miles.

Oh I realised not long after I got the car, I just wondered what my actual degradation is. I've not as it's been steadily getting warmer my average usage is dropping, started at 370 when I got the car in Dec, now down to 340/mile.

Just a little background as I realise it heats the battery so Mondays get hammered as my commute is reasonable, but them I'm home for an hour then go pick the kids up a couple of miles away, then home another hour drop my daughter at brownies (another couple of miles), then an hour after that go pick her up. Long story short is that I use about 10% each way to work, and often a few percent just on those Monday night trips. As I had an e92 m3 though, I think I would have been paying 100 quid a week in fuel so it's still miles cheaper, I just feel its a bit dishonest as you really have to research the range drop.

There is a video of RSymonds measuring the paint thickness and it is inline with other brands. Also colour has no impact on thickness.

The shape is probably the issue, simply more area to chip.

@TheOracle, yes I’ve considered it, the problem I have is the visible difference between a PPF’d panel and a non-PPF’d one. That means I’d have to get the whole car done, which is £££.

I’m getting a hard ceramic coating done which should go some way to adding some protection.

I have a right dilema on my hands at the minute. This weekend just gone I test drove a BMW i4 M50 and a Tesla Model 3 (they only had the standard range for me to try). To be honest, I was blown away with the standard range performance, it's not slow!

Either way, I'll have to decide on PPF and ceramic at some point, but like you say, PPF is mega money. If I get the BMW, they will protect it prior to collection, but the Tesla is a good 2hr motorway drive and you just now by the time I get it home it will be riddled :p

I'd get PPF done. It's £££, but so is the car.

Having already had a front bumper and bonnet sprayed TWICE, I wouldn't even waste your money on a ceramic coating. The bumper bonnet and front/side wing is what I'd do as a minimum.

My replacement car is now showing delivery May 21 - June 18

Crazy to think it was showing Nov 22 when I ordered a few weeks ago. Still no word on taking back my current car... might need to push for a resolution ASAP or end up with two.

The way I look at it is, if I need the sill and arch redone in a year then the 3rd party paint might be stronger, and it will look better than PPF.

Forget the sill and arch... the bumper and bonnet will need a replacement long before the sill and arch. What colour do you have? I'd bet a body shop would charge for a big blend job if you're trying to match a metallic colour.

It's blue. Most of the ones I've seen on Facebook have been on the arches, but it's usually black or red ones that were built in 2020. Before buying as new one I viewed a 3000 mile red one and there were lots of chips on the rear arch.

What's the deal with car insurance? I've done a comparison between a standard range M3 and the BMW M50. Tesla is a whopping £300 extra a year (£800 for the year vs £500).

This was with Admiral.
