I was so silly, spent 5k making the car go faster to then stick a ton of electrics in there

I did love how the amps used to slide over and a fan would turn on to cool them down tho

I remember the sony chameleon type stereo i had, Paid £500 for it and it was stolen in 4 days, took me 3 days tog et it back then i stuck it on ebay

I just roll with the standard one now

An old school pullout Alpine 7915M connected up to a 3672 active crossover, a 3566 6 ch amp and a 3553 4 ch amp. (which really needs to be tidied up)

Total noob question here. How much does the head unit itself affect the sound quality, I always thought the quality of your speakers would have the most bearing on SQ.

A lot, in my experience. OEM head units are often built to a fairly limited budget with pretty average pre and power amplification stages (i.e. the handling of the sources, and the amplification of them to drive the speakers). Each time I've swapped out a standard head unit for a decent aftermarket one, the increase in quality has been quite noticeable, especially in the Mondeo. It seems to have half decent speakers in. If you change the speakers instead of the OEM source equipment, you're just making the shortfalls even more apparent and going backward, if anything.

Obviously this doesn't quite apply to real high end ICE systems you'd find in premium cars (Mark Levinson, Harman Kardon, Linn etc (Not Bose  )) :)

In summary, I concur with Paradigm ;)

Becker Grand Prix 7990

Came with the car. Turns out to be quite expensive!

Shame they didn't buy a red one, and it's unfortunate it doesn't support iPod charging.

Wow, that brings back memories I had long forgotten, previous owner of my first car put one of those in and it was stolen about a year into me owning it! It was a motorized flip down kind of thing wasn't it? And you could change the angle slightly and stuff. Remember girls used to be well impressed with that! :o

Had that a while now. It's pretty good, great integration over bluetooth, but the audio setup is a mixed bag - its got some great crossover flexibility, being able to change the crossover points and slopes for front/rear/sub independantly, but they paired it with a very limited eq meaning I cant get the best out of my setup. annoying. That and having the flick that right knob up/down or left/right to change music folder/track is a pain in the backside when driving as its too easy to push it in the wrong direction.

It's a good HU really though, but I want something else now.

That would be me, it was originally in my Saxo, then Clio it cost around £480 to buy new, was an expensive HU.

Alpine X305, hooked up to an iPod in the glovebox which just lives there. Everything is controlled through the HU.

Brilliant unit, albeit with a very cheap and plastic feeling fascia.

How can you lot have your climate controls set to such daft temperatures? >20C? Sheesh. I'm sweating at the mere thought :D

That's the one I had in my old e36 was £300 iirc I bought the orange one because its most like the interior lighting and is clearer than the red and blue models.
