***The Wine Thread***

Can anyone recommend a high quality dessert wine? I want to get a bottle for Christmas dinner instead of a bottle of champagne this year. Looking for something really nice, like Sauternes or Tokaji.

To go with Christmas pud or just a generic dessert wine?

For the pudding my go to is PX (Pedro Ximenez sherry). You'd get a good quality bottle for sub £20. It's an excellent match.

Can give more info re Tokaji or Sauternes / Barsac if wanted. There you're looking at £10 to £300 ish.

Personally I drink more fresher, new world, dessert wines than the classic stuff.

(Pedro Ximenez sherry)
Very good shout!

I had a great dessert wine from Catalonia made from sun dried grapes, but damned if I can remember the name of it.

Last night I had a nice bottle of Cremant d'Alsace. Tis the season etc. It was 20% off all wine in the supermarket, and while I don't tend to get my reds there, can't argue with 5.30 a bottle of not bad cremant, then 20% off on top!
This week we were a bit bad, I was annoyed my wife drank the 62, so got another bottle out, and then had a bottle of Zolla and Gold Nativ as well. Shocking behaviour. After Christmas I'm going to have to do a bit of a stock up I fear.

I put on a stone over Christmas so we are trying our best to have a dry January. Obvs my birthday and our night at MBtC required drinks. I will probably have a couple at her youngest's eighteenth too. The other two nights out we have planned (see Gregg Wallace on Food at the local theatre and Frank Turner at the Town Hall - might get backstage cos the missus works with his sister) should be doable dry.

Edit (afterthought): Which should be three drink days out of thirty-one, or 90% dry. Dampuary?

Had a few bottles over the week before last as the inlaws came over:
Margaux - Chateau les Eyguem - 2015
Cotes du Rhone-Village - Sablet - 2016

The margaux was heavier than I was expecting considering it's age, needed a robust chunk of BBQ beef.. The Sablet on the other hand was rather good just by itself or with a meal.

I know the answer here is to either drink a whole bottle or find willpower but I’m on the lookout for single serve bottles (or half bottles) of red wine.

My wife has stopped drinking it and I’ve moved away from it as it’s harder to justify opening a full bottle on a weeknight which inevitably gets drunk and I’m trying to cut down on booze.

Most supermarkets only stock generic/crap wine, although Aldi do a superb Grande Alberone Zinfandel in a half bottle.

Any recommendations for something big and powerful in smaller sizes?

Those fiends at Vivino have just tempted me into parting with north of a monkey on wines. It started innocently enough, with an offer on the Nativ Blu Onice 2014 down to £16.49. Boom, I'll have six, thanks. Then I am shown a list of other great offers and that's where the trouble started. First, I clocked the Diomede Canace Puglia Nero di Troia 2013 at £18.35 on the bottle. Another six, great. At this point I'm thinking I ought to get something for the missus, so I get six Mt Beautiful Sauvignon Blanc 2014 at £12.99. I would have stopped here but then I saw an offer on Cantine San Marzano (those responsible for the Anniversario 62): Collezione Cinquanta Vino Rosso for £18.45. Plus anotherPuglian Primitivo (4.4) with £7 off!!! Santi Nobile Cento X Cento Appassimento Primitivo 2016 at £17.99. Zoiks, now I need more white for herself. Last box, honest, Nativ 25 Rare Irpinia Greco 2016 £12.25.

Just opened a La Pogue 2010. Not an expensive bottle, but the case has been sat there in the dark for at least 3 years. Taste clear as a bell.
