***The Wine Thread***

I lied...we ended up having this. With that many awards...it couldn't possibly be bad, could it?! It was actually pretty good; eucalyptus, vanilla, I got notes of lime oddly enough...

3.5*

Wakefield make some very nice wines (Clare valley again). I think they used to be called Taylors. I want to try their pioneer 2012, (but it's £70 :( )

I had the 2012 St Andrews a couple of months back and it was pretty good, but could probably done with 5 years in a cellar.

Tim Adams aberfeldy 2010 to go with some sirloin steaks for me this evening. :)

Lets talk decantors - I'm getting to the age where I think these things matter! I've found some pour through devices on the jungle river that get fantastic reviews. Does anyone use anything to air their wine?

I use a decanter.

Had this the other night. Stunning bottle but needs time to breathe. In fact, a lot of the wine I have benefits from some time to open up. Bordeauxs are the worst for it, I find. I had a Margaux which I drank the next day, which was sat all night in the decanter which was simply amazing. Way better than the day before.
Really depends on what it is though. Some wine I find benefits from breathing, but then after a point it'll go downhill. Others, like Bordeauxs take a lot longer to do so.

I got one of these in the sales after Christmas which I use when I'm opening a good red..

A couple of hours in that before serving can make quite a difference.

Well I have a Riedel decanter, and we all know that wine tastes much better out of a Riedel ;).
Had £80 credit on my Naked Wine account so just ordered 6 bottles, including 2 2010 Rioja Crianza's which I'll be doing a bit of a blind tasting with to see if I can tell the difference.

Thanks for the advice all. I think our issue is that wine is often a short notice decision and so the pouring "decanters" are / were quite appealing. Will read around some more on the topic

Had a great time in Austria last week. Did a wine-tasting of Austrian wines here and was really surprised at how great Austrian wines are.

Gruner Veltiner was nice, The unoaked Chardonnay was remarkable, not sweet or buttery but crisp, floral, and minerally. The Pinot Blanc was shamazing and the missus was bowled over by their Sauvignon Blancs. Two reds stood out the Merlot and, best of all, the Zweigelt. He had us try a Zweigelt and I said how much I liked it so he brought out the best one he has and it was unbelievable and heavenly. 20.90 Euros a bottle, mind, so it should be.

Got quite tipsy in the 25 degree sun (without a hat) slurping away. Ended up ordering a case for delivery with 2 x Chardonnay, 2 x Sauvignon, 2 x Pinot Blanc, 2 x Merlot, and 4 x Zweigelt. I'll post some pics when it arrives.

I ordered some more wines. See if they come OK. Companies I've not used before.

Also, I am still waiting for 2 bottle of Newton - the Puzzle from one place but they've gone all quiet! Annoying, as it's supposed to be the nuts

I might get some Champagne in the fridge for tonight. We've not been drinking in the week and I fancy a drop tonight. We had a BBQ and a mate bought over a 2000 bottle of Pol Roger Winston Churchill, so tempted by that.

That looks pretty good! Tempted to get some myself. Where did you order from?

I've never had it, but I've no doubt that it is a fine bottle of Champagne :)!
