The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Never played it before as I never liked the protagonist - Sekiro and Dark Souls 3's Knight were leagues above in design, coolness, mystique...
Picked up the Witcher 3 now and must say I'm hooked. I'm a super jaded customer, but really surprised at how W3 managed to pull me in. I did mod Geralt's face to below, but other than that, the game really is great. (mods: https://www.nexusmods.com/witcher3/mods/951 https://www.nexusmods.com/witcher3/mods/958)

Performance wise it's ok on a 3080 @4K, Ultra+, all RTX is off, TAA (don't like DLSS blurriness). The first location was a solid 60fps, I now got to Velen and it often dips below 50. Wow :)

set DLSS to Quality and it wont be blurry

I only mention it because I had already renamed the one DLL to enable Afterburner, but I was getting a few CTD's.

Since I renamed the other one, I've had a good ffew hours without any more, also running full hairworks.

Not conclusive yet, but so far, so good.

erm what has Afterburner got to with this next gen update? sorry I'm lost now

Hairworks was robbing nearly 10fps on my system which is just nuts. Turned that straight off. The standard hair looks great anyway
It seems to have more of a performance impact in this next gen version for some reason (probably incompetence).

The dodgy dx11 to dx12 dll that CDProjekt used (the one that Microsoft warned them about using) stopped AB from working with the game.
Oh ok well I don't user it, I use EVGA Precision X for my GPU fans

The crashes are mine are to do with the next gen update

I beg to differ. Griffon's head on Geralt's saddle is waaay more fluffy and just better with hairworks on. I think this also applies to bears, wolves etc
I agree. It was always quite taxing but it’s worth it in my opinion.

I found this yesterday, no need to delete or rename any files for after burner.

No need to rename or delete anything, just make a notepad file in the profiles folder of msi's installation, call it witcher3.exe.cfg and just put this line inside

[RendererDirect3D12]

D3D11on12=0

And save it.
Deleting the file is like one key depression though?

Anyone tried the next gen update on Steam Deck yet? I got around to trying it today, and It's truly awful as I suspected it would be.

You can get it running in DX12 version now by using Proton Hotfix. DX11 version also works. However, both versions are a total stuttering mess compared to v1.31A I had running before, which was a butter smooth locked 40fps/ 40Hz with most settings at medium or high.

And you can't have cloud syncs working on GOG if you have different update versions running on PC and Deck i.e. has to be the same version on both.

What a total shower of **** this update is by CDPR. They really should be ashamed of themselves.

anyone else getting micro stuttering on anything above medium foliage visibility range?

lol no chance on steam deck

The new hotfix has made stability WORSE!
Now getting crash to desktop after 5 minutes of gameplay, every time. This is on PC (not Deck) in DX12.

Performance may be slightly improved though. Getting a locked 40fps walking around in Novigrad. Before it would dip to the low 30s sometimes.

As suggested on another forum I've disabled resizable bar too so going to test that. And going to try disabling hyperthreading to see if it smooths out microjudder....

Nah, never attribute to incompetence that which can be adequately be explained by malice!

The TPU upscaler comparison write-up (https://www.techpowerup.com/review/the-witcher-3-wild-hunt-fsr-2-1-vs-dlss-2-vs-dlss-3-comparison/) did also go on about CPU usage.

It's not good and barely scales. Single-core rules once again for poorly* coded games. I guess to max out a 4090 at 1080P would require a 10GHz CPU!

* Yes, it is not easy to make a well-scaling engine.

I think I may be onto something here lads in terms of performance and stability!....

Update to the latest hotfix from today asap, then if you're running an intel CPU and Nvidia GPU:

1. Disable resizable bar for the GPU (UPDATE - THIS ONE IS NOT NECESSARY - IT'S HYPERTHREADING OFF THAT's KEY!....)
2. Disable Hyperthreading for the CPU! (I think this may be the biggest factor for smoothness/ lack of hitching as there is a real DX12 CPU issue going on at the mo in this update)
3. Using RTSS limit your FPS to 45 (yes 45 sounds horrific and ridiculous, but it's really not and it helps consistency in lack of judder/ stutter!)

My PC is a 3090 on an i7 11700, screen is 4k OLED GSync compatible running at 120Hz, and I'm running custom ultrawide 3840x1620 (my favourite for most games) and HDR

Key In game settings are:

1. DX12 with all raytracing on except shadows (I think these cause weird pop in currently)
2. Enable reflex+ (really helps with input lag and makes 45fps feel very very responsive)
3. DLSS balanced (tailor this to your GPU - need to keep it pegging BELOW 99% at all times to maintain maximum judder free motion. IF the GPU is maxing out and 45fps can't be maintained, even with Gsync you get judder and the frametimes are negatively impacted)
3. Most other settings a mix of ultra+ and ultra and high

Doing the above solved the 5 minute crash to desktop after the hotfix update I was getting, and also really smoothed out performance. The frametime graph in RTSS is now a FLAT 45 most of the time, and it feels very responsive. 45fps sound ridiculous on a 3090, and it is really, but it's a bit like running 40hz/ 40fps on the Steam Deck which is a revelation many will tell you. It's a world above 30 in terms of overall feel. Trust me.

Unitil the game hopefully gets a proper DX12 patch and implementation, this is the best I've got to play with currently, and it feels pretty pretty good, and it does look superb I have to say with GI RT.

So I found out that my source of crashing was actually the mild undervolt on my 3090. With stock settings I get no crash. o_O

This is really, really odd as this is literally the only game that has ever disagreed with it and I've been running my GPU like this for almost 2 years I think and never, ever had to disable it.

WTF CDPR?

If anyone is still crashing, run your GPU stock and see if it stops.
