theHunter: Call of the Wild

I played this for a bit over the weekend but yeah, I'm terrible at it! I managed to track and shoot one deer, but then spent ages trying to find it. When I eventually stumbled across it (quite literally!) I then didn't know what to do next. I got the kill screen, but I closed it before I realised that I might need to check it for an option to harvest the animal, and then the deer disappeared from the game. Huh?

Also, as mentioned by someone else in this thread, tracking an animal takes forever, and even then I am lucky to even find it after all that time. I am not having much luck! Does it get easier to track and find them as you level up?

Aside from that, it's a beautiful game and a wonderful change of pace for me. I need to find some outposts now :)

Things can be a bit of a chore to start off with the default rifle, but if you shoot a deer just behind the front legs and about one third up it's torso you'll hit something critical and it wont get very far. Things do get easier as you progress though as to can assign skill and perk points into certain aspects that will help you. You'll also get access to more powerful weapons and gear of course and the more you play the more adept at hunting you'll get.

For outposts go to the lookout towers - these will open more of them up on your map together with various other things.

This guy's played the classic game for many years and has some good vids up about CotW that should help : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4EGDB-y2OvY

No idea, just fancied a change from the rifle. I had a few squirrels, can birds even be shot or are they just "there" with no col box? Bear maybe or Bison when I find some.

well i just been mounting climbing starting from steve45s route.managed to survive some tricky spots and rocks and walked most of the range of mountains.reason i wanted to go up was to record the top and look for long range shots.in the end found a group of elk and pulled off a 466m lung shot.. will try and get video up for tomorrow.

Sounds like a nice little jaunt up there - I might have to do that myself. That's a fine shot too - I'm up to 435m myself on a single shot kill on a Blacktail with a .270, which is pretty much my go to rifle at the moment. Did I read that the max view distance for animals is 500m somewhere?

Guys i have only played on the Hirschfelden hunting reserve so far, are the Moose, the Whitetail Deer, the Roosevelt Elk, the Black Bear, only on the Layton Lake District reserve ? or are all 14 animals on both reserves, not even tried Layton Lake District yet, whar reserve you guys like best, oh also, i do not see any pings on multiplayer server list, i do on all my other steam games.

Just in case anyone missed my post :)

yes 500m is supposed to be the draw distance i think with animals but you have to get the hieght to get those shots . the elk i was watching was popping render at about 475 where i was shooting and i wanted it for a video. :p

Yes. You will only find Fox, Roe, Fallow, Red, Boar & Bison in Hirschfelden. Coyote, Blacktail, Whitetail, Elk, Moose & Bear in Layton Lake.

Has anyone else got an issue with aiming while crouch-walking forwards? Going side-ways or backwards is fine - as is forwards if I am stood up. But as soon as I crouch-walk forwards, I lift the rifle as though I am aiming down the iron-sights, rather than look through the scope. It's really annoying. I'm sure it hasn't always been an issue.

You did get the harvest.

Don't put too much effort into tracking. I tend to just walk and wait for calls, then home in on those, rather than follow tracks too much. A lot of the time, the animals will stick to undergrowth and it's far too difficult to get a clear shot on them before they spook. It sounds a bit strange but it also took me a while to get out of the habit of playing like a sniper - sticking to bushes for concealment, etc. Try to stay somewhat in open areas and you'll have a much better chance of getting targets.

In game* not in games..

I'm aiming for a shotgun next, but with 2000 odd on me, it costs 30,000! Grinding time. I did unlock some titanium sights so getting there.
I bought the shotgun, as I needed it for a mission. I kinda wish I would have saved the cash for the Rangemaster. I hit a couple of deer with it from 15-20m and they both got up and ran. It seems quite under-powered, tbh. I imagine that it'll perform better with slugs, however.

Was not expecting to like this, but i really do. Perfect for calming down after a Rocket League session! Still quite early on in the game, but had an interesting/very tense moment laying in some bushes having called a deer over....it got closer and closer, i could hear them..tracked them..and blammo...another appears and scared the hell outta me.

Zero crashes so far too, which I see mentioned on the Steam reviews a fair bit.
