This is why people are losing respect for the police...

Nichols video could prejudice any prosecution so don't see that happening , Floyd video arguably divisive - coincidentally V

A lawyer for former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin made his case on Wednesday for why his client's three convictions in the murder of George Floyd should be overturned, which the state vehemently rebutted.
Speaking before a three-member panel on the Minnesota Court of Appeals, lawyer William Mohrman argued that extensive pre-trial publicity made it impossible for Chauvin to get a fair trial in 2021 and said the main remedy they are seeking is a new one
.

good luck with that Derek considering there was so much video footage filmed by the public and the police there release body camera footage all the time. Derek's big problem is he knelt on a man's neck not only until he had stopped breathing but for minutes longer with zero care if he lived or died. That is why he is locked up and he deserves to be locked up.

Regardless of the guilt, I do agree with the reasoning.

If you are put on trial it is right that you have a fair (as possible) trial.

Which in Dereks case, personally I think given the venue, the riots, the concerns the jurors made regarding their own safety and the revelations about a juror who may not have been entirely forthcoming about his motives, was not the case.

However I dont expect his appeal to succeed, and to be frank his lawyer was absolutely useless before the judges, unable to really articulate the points in a convincing way.

Four of the five former officers released from jail - Fox News

Four of the five former Memphis police officers charged over the death of Tyre Nichols were released from jail by early this morning, Fox News reports that jail records show.

All four posted bonds, says the US news outlet, which means the men have placed an amount of money with the city to guarantee their next court appearance.

Desmond Mills and Justin Smith each posted $250,000 (£202,340) and were released Thursday evening, it says.

Emmitt Martin and Tadarrius Bean were released by 04:00 local time (10:00 GMT), Fox News details.

Bean also posted $250,000 and Martin posted $350,000 (£283,346), it says.

How do people suddenly find that sort of money to post bond? Do the police union pay it or something?

Whats the issue?

Is there any problem releasing 4 innocent* men from custody?

*until proven otherwise.

Just awkward timing, allows people to spin a narrative about them 'being let out to go back to their familie whilst the victim can't go back to his' etc.

I was hoping there wouldn't be major rioting because of how Memphis Police have handled it so far (quick firings, suspects arrested and charged, transparency etc) but just seems a bit odd to let them out on the day everything looks like it might kick off.

well the parents had their opportunity to request limited rioting, but adopted a passive-aggressive interview strategy - why do they choose to be interviewd at all, American culture, I don't get.

still like to know why video is being released, a police openness thing ? or, demands from parents lawyers must be met

During a news conference Friday at a Memphis church, Nichols’ stepfather, Rodney Wells, said the family was very satisfied with the legal process so far, and he urged people, if they needed to protest, to do so peacefully.

“We want peace. We do not want any type of uproar. We do not want any type of disturbance. We want peaceful protest,” he said. “The family is very satisfied with the process, with the police chief, with the D.A. [district attorney].”

Sounds like a request for peaceful protest to me.
