Thorney Motorsport

It's interesting how some tuners handle disgruntled customers. John could've done the admirable thing and sorted this out directly with the customer and everything would've been ok, the customer then would've went online and praised Thorney for their excellent customer service and everyone would've won but instead it's an absolute disaster.
I'm sure that every company makes mistakes but its how they handle it that makes the difference. I'm sure that Thorney are a good outfit but they've handled this really badly and need to sort it quickly otherwise it may well be the end of them.

Threatening forum owners just makes it worse too. GT Tuning did the same to me many years ago when I ran a forum so I just closed down the forum and when people asked why I told them. I wish I'd just kept the forum running and let GT Tuning have a massive PR disaster like Spie has. Good on you Spie!

I think the problem here is that whilst he may be passionate about tuning, he is clearly not a businessman otherwise he wouldn't be in this position.

The only thing missing now out of all this is some comedy photoshops:p

I saw on one of those VXR Online links someone mentioned he used to work as a PR Manager? Is that true, surely not?

Or perhaps it is and we're seeing the reason why he is no longer working in PR! :p

"Tuner (ahem) dude"
I cant comment fully as it is now subject to legal proceedings, but if you contact M3 Cutters, MLR and OPL, Shane did indeed request that the threads be deleted. We have subsequenty taken legal advice and requested the same. We contacted the other forums with that email on legal advice and most have responded well. Libel applies to all forms of written communication, that includes on the web.

Lets hope VW never read what Fox writes about them or he's going to be skint for the rest of his life!

Interestingly the JT description of the damage states that the piston crown was damaged due to weak mixtures in the failed engines, but the other forum posts refer to cracked ring lands. Ring land damage is a very common failure point of cast pistons on turbocharged engines when the boost is wound up. Detonation can kill ring lands long before the piston crown itself shows any signs of duress. Two separate failure modes, or an incorrect description?

Do these "tuners" ( I hate that term) ever bother to monitor inlet temperatures on the cars they are re-mapping? It's certainly not something I've seen mentioned so far.

I find it interesting that Thorney is so keen to pick up the wiring loom issue above all else, as it was far from the only issue presented in the (mostly now deleted) threads.

A few choice links from another forum?

Wait a minute, so he has/had ZERO background in car tuning? What did he do, learn about stuff on internet forums then decide to set up a business as a 'tuner'?

Those posts are an eye opener....

Got it in one, zero experience, it's debatable whether he even employs anyone who has the kind of technical skills required. Certainly no one of the likes of John Shield at Courtenays, Chris Randall at Hoffmans, Steve Guglielmi at Scared Stifff. All very talented guys. I'm not sure they have developed anything in house, just relying on external companies to develop it for them until they get so fed up with them they're no longer interested in dealing with them.

Keep him talking about anything and it soon becomes clear massive gaps in his knowledge start to pop up, getting ridiculed by Klassen and EDS for example. I've no doubt John tries very hard but there are times when he needs to shut up for his own good.
