What type of QTEs are in the game?...because I really hate them. It might even be a deal-breaker for me!
I found it very hard to finish Far cry 3 due to its awful unfailable QTEs. I am not totally against QTEs when done properly though. For example, The Witcher 2(some of the time) or Sleeping Dogs does them ok. What I hate most is QTEs that if you don't so them, it is game over and it just reloads and you replay that bit until you do it right
They are done really, really well. I normally dislike them, but the first hour or 2 of the game is all about Lara's survival and a lot of cutscenes are involved. Which has a few QTE's, but once the game opens up and you start to gain freedom, QTE's are a thing of the past. They are there to involve you in the development of the story, not main gameplay.
Aside from the start of the game. The only QTE's that I can think of, which are not really QTE's are:
1) Climbing, if you jump and miss it, or just awkwardly land and have to grip, rarely it will bring up a sign (360 controller for me) over her dangling hand, like a blue X. Meaning I have to catch that X otherwise she slips. Again, this is very rare and my own fault for not taking a jump properly.
2) combat, you learn to doge pretty early ingame, it's optional, you are not locked down into a one option scenario. The game does not slow, the camera stays the same. A wolf will approach, start running at you, press B to dodge. There is no onscreen warning, you have to learn to time it. Or kill the wolf before it reached you.
2b) if the wolf reaches you, you enter dead lock sort of phase where you have to bash X or Y dependent on what the game wants to escape. Or get your throat ripped out.
2c) silent kills, press Y behind an unsuspecting enemy, bash X until you hear his neck snap.
3) Advanced combat, this is ulocked later in game with skill points and works amazingly. Say a fight goes sour, you down 5 guys with guns, bows and what ever. But some guys are in close hounding at you with axes in either hand. You are given a tutorial where if you press Y after B, you can knock them back. Given you some space. No dead lock situations, just a combat options instead of trying to aim as he swerves side to side hounding at you.
3b) advanced hand to hand combat, eventually you unlock this, it's awesome! Same situation as before, but now you can battle back with your axe The guy gets close, you learn that you can knock him back and swing once or twice to cut him down. No on screen buttons to press, just something you learn.
3c) advanced countering/one hit kill combat, I just learnt this. It's amazing! So, if you dodge (B), you can then press Y at the exact time which stick a arrow into the guys knee allowing you to follow with another melee to the back of the head, finishing him off. Or if you plan it perfectly, you dodge and counter with a swift blow to the head.
Now, that sound easy, but if you time it wrong, you die. Obviously you should be playing it on hard.
When you combine all of the above against a flurry of enemies from a base. It's smooth, fluid and just works REALLY well. You get a sense that Lara is good at this, and it makes sense as we all know she is a female ninja in her later life haha. This is where she learnt to adapt and survive quickly!
