Tower block fire - london

I have no idea why so many people on here feel the need to identify the cause / what's the fault when it's extremely unlikely that anyone is an expert. It reminds me of people saying the Manchester Arena attack was in fact an exploding balloon, a stampede caused by a blown speaker or an electrical transformer going on the roof :o

I know everyone means well, just might as well wait for the outcome.

No one will go to prison. The residents will blame the council, the council will blame the contractors, the contractors will blame the regulators, the regulators will fire up the lawyers and it'll be red tape a go go for 5 years after which some government department will be fined half a million which will go from one government pocket to another.

I work alongside the HSE and deal with fire protection reviews and prevention of major accident hazards in high hazard process operations, if this had happened in a refinery and killed 17 members of the public and was proven to be caused by negligence someone would be getting locked up.

In this case if the fitment of cladding to the building was proven to be the cause of fire spread and thus a direct contribution to the death of multiple people due to lack of fully understanding how the material would effect the spread of fire or, unsuitability of the material in the first place then i would be gobsmacked if like i said someone isn't prosecuted.

It was sad, but far from unexpected, to see a fire brigade official was one of the first to get a not so gentle dig in about Tory cuts in a totally tenuous and pre-emptive association with this fire. It's a shame that the historically Left leaning fire brigade and its union can't even manage to go two days after a big fire without making some political comment, but historically they have always been agitators. I believe "unfortunate accident" is a phrase that has left the English language to be replaced by hostility to anyone perceived to be making any money, or being fortunate to live in a wealthy area. If the place had been left looking like a throw back to the seventies reinforced concrete era that too would have been wrong. I genuinely feel very sorry for Mrs. May, the media and the Left are in full attack mode since the intoxicating whiff of Corbyn going from total ridicule to merely losing the election.

its disgusting the media are in full over drive about how May didn't use her humanity and go and see some of the victims of the blaze..... Obviously she and anyone with half a brain would know this would be an inevitable opportunity for someone with a political axe to grind to 'ambush' May with the stupified shamless press on standby to catch the whole incident so we could yet again reassure ourselves that it's the nasty party that are responsible for all the ills of the world and if wasn't for all the racist old bigots we would have St Corbyn and his Marxist chums in power and all would be well. May literally couldn't win.

1) don't turn up = vilified
2) private visit don't make a big fuss =villified

3) get in and speak to some residents = get ambushed with the press in hand to make political capital out of it = villified

damm you people you making me feel sorry for Teresa May.... Teresa May of all people.... At this rate ill be defending satan next!

the crowd even heckled Sadiq Khan! May would have stood a chance!

Could well be the end of May if the death toll reaches 3 figures. Not meeting residents will look worse and worse.

please kindly explain what the **** this has to do with May? No really do! Do you really think the residents of the block would have welcomed a chat with May or do you think it would have turned into a shouting and screaming match with some bereaved and emotional people looking to blame someone, anyone and lashing out with the shamless media on hand to make some political hay ? Perhaps all political leaders should have stayed away until at least the building stopped smoledring so that the emergency services and staff on the ground could concentrate in the matter in hand rather than providing support to someone's photo opportunity?

Why are politics involved in this ? The block was refurbished for 12+ mil a year ago, money was there. It wasn't done properly or fire systems malfunctioned.

She's had 2 weeks bad press.... Now imagine corbyn having 2 years of it.... Like He didn't bow enough to the queen.... Oh wait now he's bending over too much.

Ironically I can imagine -
Corbyn not turning up = villified
Corbyn turning up = opportunitist

Apparently government ministers have been aware of the fire risk of cladding since 1999 - it does sound like the majority of the blame will be assigned to the cladding in use, but we had 18 years to do something about it and didn't. I'm glad there's going to a full public inquiry into this tragedy, I hope they ask about that.

Being a politician must be one massive headache after another, she could have met members of the community, gold plated the bathrooms and promised them 1000 unicorns, yet someone would still turn around and say, "but she didn't cook me dinner".

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

I do think one of the basic things to do though was to meet the people.

I personally dont think corbyn was being opportunistic as he has always been a people person. Whether he was or not... At least he spoke to them.

Theresa could have done the same even if she didn't want to. It would have gave some people comfort.

some of the media commentary on Corbyn may have been silly but to suggest May has only had bad press for a couple of weeks!!! Get real!

Corbyn was and is a joke politically imo the only thing that's changed is he's had some expensive coaching and has been able to make lots of political capital out of some recent atrocities and disasters against an unpopular ans inept incumberent tory pm...

Theresa had barely had any negative press at all compared to corbyn. And I beg to differ on many of your points. I however dont want to get make it political on this thread ... So ill stop there.

May really has only had bad press for a couple of weeks. Before that, she was given huge benefit of the doubt and only really ******* stupid campaign and manifesto decisions got any great criticism.

Corbyn had two years of extremely petty and sustained abuse from much of the press.

what planet are you on? Do you seriously think that May could have gone to see the residents without someone making a large public spectacle and scene out of it with this being the bit the press concentrates on. It ****ing easy to swan around a disaster site if you have spent your whole political life mostly in opposition to either the rolling party or even your own and have just lost and election where you offered more jam for everyone but were defeated by the forces of evil themselves in the form of the stories. It's quite something else when you have actually had to have responsibility for some serious responsibility and as such have of course made some unpopular decisions....

After yesterday's police commander saying "not inevitable we'll reach three figures" for fatalities, which I found shocking just for the implication that 3 figures was potentially on the card, there's speculation we could be looking at 150.

I was born in '82, so events like Hillsborough didn't really register with me at the time. I've never seen anything like it in the UK. Is this the biggest disaster we've had for 30+ years?
