I'm not entirely sure what the point of signing a 29 year old right back for 12mil was, for Arsenal that is a strange price for that age player to begin with. I'm not sure debuchy has ever shown he's actually brilliant, though likely a significant upgrade on Sagna. Though you've got to think considering Wenger wanted Sagna to stay and thought he was great, surely 1mil extra a year and an extra year on the contract to get Sagna would have ended up way way cheaper than Debuchy?
Either way, 12mil on 29year old RB, while spending 11 to 16mil on a 19yr old who needs games.
He started 18 games and subbed into another 4. If he plays less than that this season he'll be regressing basically. playing lots of games from 19-23 is what turns good players into great players. Chambers should be starting more than half the league games this year so signing an expensive experienced player makes no sense. It's nuts, up to 30mil basically on two RB's when we had a promising RB to start with who we now get rid of, and nothing on left back where Gibbs can't defend or attack.
Wenger should have had some balls, bought Chambers, not Debuchy and spent that money on a first team left back.
We might use Chambers more at CB, who knows, I thought he looked pretty good at RB when I saw him play and I kind of hate this buy a player good in one position with the intention of hoping he might be good in a different position thing that some managers do, particularly Wenger.
It might work out, we might get a CB injury and it turns out Chambers steps in and is brilliant. But the way this usually works out is, Debuchy starts loads of games, Chambers will start a half dozen games, be barely used. Debuchy will get injured or leave after 2-3 years and CHambers, having barely played for years.... will look poor.
Chambers for 25+ starts, Jenks as rotation/cover and buying a quality left back would have done so so much more for the team.
