So one week to go and still no lb in sight (I'm not counting monreo as he should have signed about 10 times by now) really do not want a full season relying on Enrique, flannagan can't cover for all the games we have plus I'd rather play him at rb over Johnson based on last 6 months

Sounds like both Chelsea and Man United are chasing Benatia. Could get interesting... United have the far greater need for a defender of his quality, but Chelsea are not short on money having made a profit from transfers so far (and also in January), and are looking for options to replace Terry.

If he can be prised from Madrid, I'd prefer to see Chelsea sign Varane though. Benatia is obviously the more complete player right now, but he will be expensive, both in transfer fee and wages, and at 27 he's in his prime will surely want to be first-choice CB from day one. I'd prefer to keep the Cahill-Terry partnership intact for one more season.

Where does it say we're chasing him, or Chelsea for that matter? The Express started the rumour about us being after him, and then Di Marzio said they'd sell him for €35m, which fuelled it. Seems completely baseless, at the moment anyway...

Nothing is ever certain until the contract is signed, but there's a weight of consensus building. United certainly need a centre-back, and Benatia is one of the best on the market.

Most (all?) of this is based on a completely fabricated article by The Express. Even Di Marzio (responding to people asking about the Express article) didn't say we specifically were interested, just that we hadn't bid.

While it would be logical for us to be interested, it's a complete non-story at the moment.

If that's a non-story, isn't the Vidal saga a non-story? :p

Not to the same degree, no. The Express/Metro, etc, are well known for just making up 100 random transfer articles per day. They're worse than the Daily Star.

There's much more to the Vidal rumours, from what I can gather. It's possible it's all been made up, but it's pretty unlikely.

The Express story is "completely fabricated" huh? Any particular reason you think that? I suppose the givemesport story is fabricated as well? And the sources that it's based (le10 and tuttosport)?

This is a thread to post transfer rumours. Honestly - what standard of "proof" do we need to reach before a rumour is considered enough of a rumour to post in a rumours thread?

Until the contract is signed, it's *always* just speculation.

Because The Express post loads of fake stories every day, it's like posting Daily Star articles. They're one of the worst sources. They're like Goal.com and Metro, with the exception that sometimes they do quote foreign reports which may be better, but not often.

The Tuttosport article seems to be just speculating based on the fact Roma were looking at Manolas, but Juventus are trying to sign him now too.

You can post what you like, I'm just giving my opinion on it, I don't think there's anything in it, yet at least. I hope I'm wrong though, I'd be happy if we signed him. :p

Fulham have signed Mark Fotheringham. Why the hell?

Also reports Stekelenburg has signed for Monaco and Magath expects Ruiz/Mitroglou to leave.

Another Arsenal Captain bailing out, they should give the arm band to Walcott next year in the hope he follows all the rest somewhere else.

On the accuracy of transfer rumours, there have been plenty of studies. this one for example analyses the percentage of correctly predicted rumours from 2006 to 2013.

The express comes in at 24.9% accuracy. This is some way behind The Guardian (34.2%), but it's not far behind the Times (27.3%), and well ahead of papers like Metro (11.6%).

The Express is not the most reliable source, but to dismiss them offhand is silly when the hard data tells a different story. They're right roughly one time in 4. The most reliable paper is right roughly one time in 3. Hardly an enormous difference.

I'm not sure what to make of that, I mean the Daily Star have managed to get just shy of 22% and it's well known they are atrocious. How exactly has it been measured, if you spam out enough stories then you're bound to get some of them right? They (Express) report on pretty much everything, wherever it's come from. A lot of it can just be common sense guesswork, if Benatia was up for sale, then obviously a number of clubs, ours included, would at least show some sort of interest. Are they looking at 'gossip column' reports too, rather than proper articles?

I personally tend to look at what the journalists who specifically cover Man Utd are saying, at the moment they are all in the dark, which means the likes of The Express almost certainly will be too. Most of the stuff at the moment is coming from abroad via agents/other clubs.

As I said, you're free to post whatever sources you want, but from what I've seen of The Express lately, they're just churning out as many articles as they can, they don't have any sources, so to speak.
