My view is that if/when a player of D'Maria's quality becomes available, you get them, he's absolutely fantastic (and seems to have a third lung) and would improve Manchester United, certainly an improvement on players similar that they have.

Don't need d'maria. Last position that needs filling.

Not if we switch to a different system, which LvG would prefer, it just depends if we can get the players for it.

Even in our current system, I'd rather have Di Maria at RWB than any of our other players (and Cuadrado seems to be a Barcelona target). Sure he's probably not great defensively, but going forward he'd rip teams to shreds.

If we have the opportunity to buy him, I'm sure LvG can come up with a new tactical system that will get the best out of him and Mata/Rooney, it's not as if Di Maria is a one dimensional player, he was used in central midfield for much of last season.

Exactly, signing a player of his quality would send out a very positive message, too, and be a huge lift to the squad which is always important.

I would rather see that money spent on a CB and a CDM / CM

LVG does not need to change the system it has so far been very effective in pre season and for Holland in the World Cup,

i understand he is a great player, but not what UTD need right now, LVG came out and said the team is unbalanced i trust that means he wont buy fwd players

At the moment it doesn't look as if we're going to sign anyone, so I'd take Di Maria over nothing...

Same old situation, again.

i am sure they will, just think they need two CB's and a CM first, you just have to worry about how fit the current 3 will stay

I agree (but 1 experienced CB will do), but I don't know how we're planning to do things. We might have a list of potential targets and we'll ONLY sign those targets. So if we don't get Vidal, Hummels, or whoever, and we don't have anyone lined up as a second choice, I'd rather we bought Di Maria than nobody. He's very expensive but I'm sure we can afford it.

Unfortunately the good journalists are all completely in the dark so everything regarding our targets is coming from abroad, hard to say how credible it all is.

Yeah I agree but if you think man utd had 5 CB last season and only used two at a time now they have 3 and will use 3 at a time this year. Leaving a massive void when it comes to injury and suspension.

Need two ideally and even then there will be times when utd will be short judging by Jones and evans resent injury form.

i must say i'm surprised utd haven't bought a destroyer/gatekeeper/holding type midfielder (fellaini is neither either of those) as their midfield is at a massive risk of getting torn to shreds by an attack.

United have basically been without a good DM since Roy Keane left and have never replaced him. Hargreaves was an attempt at filling the position and probably would have been great if he wasn't always broken. I completely agree with Jimlad that we need more than one CB. Smalling didn't look comfortable on the ball in any of the pre-season games, he has such a bad first touch and really lacks composure, and Jones and Evans are still injury prone.

If we continue to play the formation we did in pre-season with 3 CBs, there's no way we can go a season with just one addition, we'd need one addition just so that we can drop Smalling to the bench.

It'd be nice to have Cuadrado and/or Di Maria, though I'm not sure Di Maria suits the wing-back role at all, but our priority has surely got to be strengthening the defensive side of the team.

LVG said he wouldn't stick to just one formation so it's not out the question but even if he did want Di Maria as a wingback he has a great work ethic and quite underrated for it but better to use him as a proper winger though

LvG will likely promote one of Keane or Blackett (perhaps both), I thought the latter looked very good in his pre-season games for us - composed, physically imposing, fast. It's hard to gauge from pre-season, but he looked significantly better than the older defenders. If he doesn't promote them then yes, we need a couple of defenders.

I'm not saying we should drop other targets and sign Di Maria, but given the current state of the squad (midfield and defence are weak), we need a few signings. I don't think that generally you should pass up the chance to sign a player as good as Di Maria, he's one of the best players around and can play anywhere in the attack.

Dortmund have just made Hummels the club captain today, so I doubt he's going anywhere (we were never getting him anyway).

Who we're actually close to buying is anyone's guess (I think we've got a reasonable idea of targets), but we need to hurry it up. At the moment it's overwhelmingly negative on the transfer front. Daley Blind can cover a few positions and looked good at the World Cup, so he's likely under consideration.

Vidal, Benatia and Cuadrado for example would all slot into the 5-3-2 system and suddenly our team looks like one that might well win the league, but that's £110m~ worth of players, on top of the £60m~ we spent already...

I think lvg values a skillful winger who can run at a defence and cause issues like robben does for holland. I guess you'd have mata on the left or rooney and rvp up top with dia maria on the right.

Moreno will hopefully complete his move to Liverpool after Tuesdays Super Cup final. This is the 10th time he should complete his move though so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Another striker and a back-up keeper and that'll be us done I think.

I was going to say the same, Mata can play out wide if he's got permanent cover behind him but in a fluid 3-5-2 or 5-3-2 he'll leave big gaps.

10th more like 100th, really hope he does but if that's case surely it means all terms are all ready agreed so why not just announce it now but still let him play the game anyway

For a start he wouldn't have had his medical but also I'm sure Sevilla wouldn't want the distraction before, what is to them, a big game.
