The 3-5-2 gets crushed by a 4-3-3, when Juve played Bayern Philipp lahm had a free role down the right wing and caused so much havoc with Robben.

I detest the formation, it only works if u have amazing wing backs who are prepared to run up and down for the whole 90 minutes. If the opposition has good wingers they will just double up and run riot.

The CM's have to help out on the flanks when they start to double up and just makes it very hard on the team playing 3-5-2. It's very easy to stretch the team playing 3-5-2 if u have good enough width to trouble them.

There is literally not a top team out there running 4 at the back in which the wingers aren't expected to run the wings for 90 mins, none. Arsenal do it, Chelsea do it, Barca do it, Bayern do it, Real do it. It's what's expected at the top of the game. in a 3-5-2 the entire point of having the extra defender back always directly means the wing backs are expected to defend LESS, not more.

3-5-2 does not get crushed by a 4-3-3, a better team beats a worse team. You're comparing Bayern, probably the best team in the world currently to Juve... not close to the best team in the world. Then you compare the right winger having his best ever seasons with the best right back in the world and instantly assume the system is responsible, not simply significantly better players? Despite the fact that Robben has played the same in both a 3-5-2 and a 4-3-3.

You can't simply say a 3-5-2 loses because Juve got beat by bayern. bayern playing 4-3-3 trashed Barca playing a 4-3-3 and Real playing a 4-4-2 trashed Bayern playing 4-3-3.

If the opposition have good wingers and double up... nothing, every system has to cope with that, it's what the third CB is for. 3-5-2 by design has the extra CB to cope with the fullback/wingback is caught up field.

The system doesn't require any more adaptability than 4-3-3 Duffman, again by design when the wingback is caught out there is an extra defender back. In a 4-3-3/4-4-2 fullbacks are constantly caught out and there is often less cover because there won't be a third CB.

Any system when used incorrectly is a disaster waiting to happen. Again look at Barca and Bayern's utter thrashings in the champions league while using 4-3-3. On many of the goals in all the four games it was fullbacks being caught up the field and poor defensive cover. It was also a poor system and poorly trained CB's who made constant errors.

LIkewise, bad teams get beaten by better teams more often than not, regardless of formation used.

Formation itself is pretty much pointless, nothing is better than something else, what matters is using a formation that fits the players at the club best to get the best out of them.

If you lose 3 players to injury and have to play three different players, the same system working perfectly might suddenly work poorly because they are simply different players, who look for or make different types of runs or passes.

A 4-3-3 with players that don't play it well is useless, a 3-5-2 with the wrong players is useless, a 9-0-1 can work.... Inter won the CL with that formation :p

When you have 11 players working well together you have a better team, if a specific formation gets more players linking up better, it's a better system for that squad, not a better system in general.

Ye i see your point but i think a team playing 4-3-3 to it's strengths will have a better chance of winning against a team playing 3-5-2.

Juve did get crushed by it but it is probably like u said the formation was being used incorrectly with a couple of players out of position and not having the best WB's to cope with Bayern's onslaught.

I have just had to watch the formation for the last 3 seasons being played so poorly that i just blame that formation for everything :D

I also feel a little sorry for Fellaini...

- It's not his fault that Man U overpaid for him.
- It's not his fault that he was their only major signing of the summer.
- It's not his fault that Moyes played him out of position (he's no defensive midfielder...).

Despite all the above he still under-performed, but he doesn't deserve to be the running joke that he's sometimes made out to be. Through no fault of his own he was placed in an unfamiliar position with an insane amount of pressure and expectation on him.

I hope he's sold this window, and has a successful spell elsewhere. I doubt he'll go for much more than £12m though, unless United are paying a portion of his wages.

It is his fault he is lazy though.

Marko Marin is having a medical for Fiorentina, so it seems Cuadrado is indeed leaving, for (supposedly) either Man Utd or Barcelona...

Would be surprised to see him to go Barca. They have 4 guys already to fit in 3 slots and none of them get injured much. Unless of course Cuadrado is happy playing 20 games a season with a chunk of those being sub games.

I'm not sure how Barca will line up tbh. Messi is best when he has the space centrally and runners either side to create more space. With Neymar he wants ball to feet to dribble and beat people so he isn't going to run in behind a lot like Alexis / Pedro did.

Assuming their back 7 players pick themselves I think they might line up 4231 with:

------- Suarez ---------
Neymar -- Messi -- Pedro

Then Cuadrado can play either flank but I don't see him being first choice. Iniesta can (and does) play left as well but he is infinitely better centrally.

But Barca are a 433 club so you do wonder how Messi and Suarez will play together with them staying 433...

I know they play Dani Alves currently who is an auxillary right winger but Cuadrado there would be a bit brave... and a bit foolish too. :D

At least Dani Alves is moderately competent at being a defender. Cuadrado isn't.

Well he'd be a Dani Alves replacement. Not sure who's the better defender really, I've not seen Cuadrado defending much, Alves isn't exactly brilliant. :p

That's the only position they could use him in, if he doesn't play there then Barca won't be interested (and they have implied they are).

Looks like Drogba is out injured already. Ankle knock he picked up in last night's game :( I guess that makes the sale of Torres even more unlikely.

... as long as he's back and fit for the Arsenal game on October 5th!

I think you're being generous on Alves there Rusty

He ain't great though he doesn't need to be with how much of the ball Barca generally have but he is better than Cuadrado defensively. I'm sure he could probably be converted (like Jordi Alba was at Valencia prior to signing for Barca) but I would be surprised to see him there. If they sign him I see him as backup / competition for Neymar / Pedro and then cover for the RB position.

Dani Alves has generally done a pretty good job keeping Ronaldo quiet in the Classico's. Not all the time but it is Ronaldo after all... you don't do that without at least a base in half decent defending but I do agree that he isn't a great defender overall.

Not sure what you are expecting from him this season, but highly doubt he will play against Arsenal, He's 37 in March his best is a long way behind him.

It was more in jest than anything else. His scoring record against Arsenal is frightening. He loves the taste of Gooner blood.

Besides, his age didn't stop him putting two past Arsenal last year when playing for Galatasaray :p

Nobody is realistically expecting him to play 90mins. He'll be a 20min 'impact sub' for tbe most part I imagine.

Catalan paper Sport is reporting that United have agreed personal terms with Cuadrado, but haven't yet fixed a price with Fiorentina. link.

We definitely don't want to be paying too much for him if we can help it. £30m is okay, £40m isn't so good.

The Manchester journalists haven't even mentioned his name, so there's nothing on our end. Either we're keeping everyone brilliantly in the dark, or we're not really trying to sign anyone aside from Vermaelen which has obviously now failed...

Given how quietly Herrera was signed I suspect its just a matter of no leaks coming out,

If the reports are true regarding how many have been told they can leave over the weekend ( and of course from Utd's point of view this info leaking is a benefit) Utd HAVE to buy some players just to get through the season

If the axing rumours are true the one I find really unfair is Will Keane as he has barely had a chance to play in 1st team games. Even if he was kept for cup games I do find it strange if he is shown the door. Rafael could also be debated but imo with his injury record combined with his questionable tempramemt it was a matter of when rather than if.

I could see Barca lining up in a 3-4-3 this season, could certainly work as different type of formation to the usual 4-3-3. Would clear up some of their frailties at the back by adding another CB in there. They have so many options it's ridiculous..
