Hell, even Frank Lampard wouldn't have had a shot at getting in a very top side by 19. Neither would Diego Costa.

Diego Costa is 25 years old in the same way that Kanu and the Nigerian olympics team of 1996 are still only 28yrs old. I jest but it wouldn't surprise me. That is one oooold face. He's gonna score goals for fun though.

A fella I know at work who "knows" someone at Melwood mentioned Eto a few weeks ago. I'd question our ambition if we went there to be honest. I don't rate Eto, especially given his age but I think he's a ***** aswell. We have the money....Rodgers should be able to get his targets.

I agree with you to some extent. However you were talking about paying £30m to transition Benatia into the team to replace Terry in the long term. If Zouma is as good as you say, he should be doing that. I think some of the bigger clubs are too scared to put some faith in their young players, but that's a different discussion - don't want to derail the transfers thread further!

I think Zouma has a great deal of potential. Whether that potential develops to the full, and he becomes a truly world class player, remains to be seen.

Besides, the two players are in very different stages of their careers - Benatia is 27 and at his prime. Zouma is 19... He can develop for a few years either on loan or as a squad member, learning from the likes of Terry and Cahill. If he develops well enough to take a place away from Cahill or Benatia (or anyone else who's in the squad) then so be it. Remember, he'll be reaching his prime more or less when players like Cahill and Benatia are ready to retire.

To be clear, Chelsea don't *need* a player like Benatia in this window. Frankly, the squad is well rounded at the moment (apart from a lack of depth at CF). But someone like Benatia could strengthen the defence and be a rapid replacement for Terry. Players like Zouma and Kalas have the potential to take a starting place, but they're not quite there yet.

... I agree that it seems like a lot of money to spend on a position that isn't essential right now - and this was my first thought when we were first connected to him before the world cup. But players of his quality don't come on the market all that often, and we've made a profit on the last two transfer windows, so the funds are certainly there. It would also have the added bonus of denying Man United a top class player at a position they desperately need to strengthen so there's that... :p

On the Eto'o rumours... Well he'd come in for free, so paying maybe ~£4-5m in wages for a 12 month contract wouldn't be the end of the world. He wasn't exactly spectacular for Chelsea last season, but he's still got chops in front of goal, and he was clearly our best striker.

That being said, Liverpool have money to spend so surely someone like (say) Wilfried Bony would be a better option? Playing two up-front, with Sturridge and Bony, and Lambert as backup, would make for quite a potent attacking force. I haven't seen much linking Liverpool to Bony, but I don't really see the downside. Surely ~£20m would be enough to prise him away from Swansea?

I really don't see the Eto'o thing at all, if you ask me that's all agent talk trying to stir up interest in his client. I'd be surprised if Liverpool signed him, very surprised.

This seems the most likely option. He's been trying to find himself a place all over, and he's already said that he wants to join a Champions League team. CL teams that are willing to pay £100k / week for a 33(?) year old are few and far between.

I'd rather see Eto'o go to America or something. Isn't he about 40 now (as in real age rather than what he/his agent tell people his age is)?

Well I think even the papers have given up on Man Utd transfer rumours now. Not going to be entirely surprised if we go into the season with the squad we have now without any re-enforcements.

Portugese papers claiming that United have made a £16m (20m euro) bid for Marcos Rojo.

Seems quite a lot of money for him (transfermarkt recon he's worth £4.8m), but United need CBs. Who knows...

Joining Liverpool would be a good career move for Eto'o I reckon, just think how much he can learn from the best striker in the league.

He's a LB, isn't he?

Hmm... Transfermarkt has his primary position as CB, but it seems he's been playing as a left back recently for Argentina and Sporting. The Portugese paper ("O Jogo") recons Van Gaal will use him as a CB.

I really don't know much about him - just sharing rumours I've come across.

:D

Utd are reported to only be offering under £10m upfront for rojos, with ~6m in addons, but because of 3rd party ownership having the majority of the player Sporting arent that keen

Utd and Napoli sounds like have come to an agreement over Fellaini with €3m ~ Loan agreement near to completion for the season even though most of that is going to be his wages ( Utd are covering 50 %)

£2m loan agreement is close for Zaha to go back to CP as well ( but outright sale is also still on the cards depending on what Utd decide)
