While I agree, it does seem perfectly viable at least. Our one obstacle, assuming PSG aren't in for him, is to convince him to miss CL football for hopefully just this season, maybe next.

We'll see if he's in the squad against Atletico tonight, COPE and Marca think not...

Bayern are also being awkward over Benatia, we should be straight in there and pay Roma's asking price.

I think the problem is or could be, that Manchester United are trying to negotiate, almost too much.

The squad and first team desperately need improving. Manchester United need to meet clubs demands for transfer fee's, Di Maria and Benatia would be two players that the club sign without hesitation.

The same applies for the ~majority of players.

Another season without European football will be a disaster.

I don't think there's any doubt about this, Woodward will be trying to do the deals as cheaply as possible. When it comes to football transfers there isn't always much room for negotiation, especially when you're dealing with the likes of Real Madrid.

Madrid do want to get rid of Di Maria though, so they can get Falcao in. We might benefit from waiting but I suspect not.

If we're haggling over a few million here and there then that's so stupid. I bet we've lost out on players because of it.

Oh it seems perfect... a little too perfect for it to actually happen. LvG drops his name when referencing players that he would love on the wings. RM buy Rodriguez, Ancelotti says that Di Maria has asked to leave and won't sign a new contract.

All this suggest to me is that we will miss out on another transfer that we shouldn't have any trouble securing. The number of players that we could / should have signed over the past 5 years must be absolutely staggering.

You forgot - Perez is keen to sell him so they can sign Falcao.

As I mentioned though, it's not the most straightforward transfer considering the quality of the player and our current predicament. Lack of CL football won't always be an issue, but with a player like Di Maria I'm sure it is a concern.

Anyway, fingers crossed as usual. :p

We could have him delivered gagged and bound at our front gate and Woodward would find a way to lose him. I know that we don't have CL football but do you think that if Chelsea missed on CL football this season anyone would be worried about them getting back in this season.

Of course they wouldn't because they have a brilliant squad full of top players. When a marquee player looks at the current United squad he won't think that its anything more than a big gamble when it comes to getting top 4 and CL next season.

We should have bought a few top players earlier than this so that anyone else we wanted would see that we have the squad and manager to compete again. If I was Di Maria I would want some sort of clause in my contract related to being sold next year if United don't get CL football.

Of course we should have bought much better than we have so far, but we are where we are. :(

It can still be partially salvaged, be handy when we don't have 8 players out injured too.

And based on where we are, where are we likely to be come the end of the transfer window?

You don't go from being a complete pleb in the market to snapping up a few worldies in the dying days of the window.

No, but we might get one.

As a Man Utd fan, it shames me to say that if I was Di Maria, I wouldnt want to sign unless the pay packet was HUGE.

And just to remind Man Utd supporters:
3 signings so far:
Shaw - Injured
Herrera - Injured
Rojo - ineligible to play - no work permit.

Its actually quite laughable.
Never did I believe that under LvG, this would be happening.
For one, I'd never have allowed Evra to leave - and I'd have done everything to persuade him to stay another year. We lost 3 experienced defenders in 1 Summer - absolutely crazy.

Previously, I've said that we should trust the manager, but now that we have so many injuries and look a dead certainty to lose against Sunderland, I think we need to spend money and build a big squad. I'm not understanding how/why LvG is so relaxed about the situation and isn't forcing Woodward to buy players - even squad players.

As others have said above, I think Woodward is trying to negotiate a better price. The problem with this strategy is that if we continue to negotiate until 31/08, we could end up either paying a much higher price (which is what happened with Fellaini) OR we end up losing the player.

I am worried that we are going to rely heavily on the youth team to cover the injuries during the season. I hope LvG realises that if he fails to get top 4, he will more than likely be fired.

PS. off topic, Paul Gascogne looks like a zombie from a horror movie.

I don't think LvG or Moyes had any say in who we actually sign beyond giving Woodward a list of players. LvG can't turn round and say to the world that everything is a disaster and that we can't get top 4 anymore. What he is thinking in private is another matter entirely but publicly he won't say anything of the sort.

We have a manager who will get the most out of what we have and has said that it will take a few months to get the side playing as he wants. I don't think this squad will get top 4 but we should get 5th. We simply won't go through the season without numerous injuries and we don't have the quality to get top 4 based on all the other teams that are competing for it having strengthened considerably more than us.

As Robbo says, we may get a marquee signing before next weekend but I wouldn't hold your breath.

im surprised lvg hasn't walked away from it all his reputations on the line

Nah, I think most people will realise that Woodward didn't make the signings he wanted. I also don't mind if we miss top 4 as long as we play good football along the way. One of the best things about pre-season is that he got us passing the ball really nicely and attacking with some flair. Moyes football was worse than the stuff we have been playing for years which is one of the reasons we all wanted him gone.

If United under LvG show improvement and play good football then I don't mind if we don't do so well this season.

I don't get why people seem to think Manu are missing out on signing the top cream of players from other clubs abroad. When have united ever done this with much success in all the period of success? I can't think of many players. Stam came from the dutch league and the same for RVN? They are the only two successes my old man memory can recall and they didn't come from the very best teams in europe at the time?

Yet united managed to maintain success without dumping £56m on a Real Madrid reject. I totally agree United need to rebuild and add lot's of strength to the side but chasing marque signings doesn't ever seem to really work for the way United have gone about business in the last 20 years. Perhaps it's the scouting and youth team coaching that needs an overhaul because £50m players in their mid 20's aren't interested in being out of the CL and those that are probably shouldn't be the players you look at.

Bit harsh to call Di Maria a reject, RM wouldn't pay him what he wanted and have often discarded good players (to sign more fashionable ones). Look at Robben (who LvG signed for Bayern).

Di Maria is often the best RM player on the pitch, which is impressive considering who his teammates are.

Agree with the rest though, shrewd cheaper signings are a better way to go about it, and with the right scouting, just as effective.

I actually think that you need to go for a marquee signing, whereas i usually advocate being more shrewd. Di Maria would be such a lift to the club, he'd be a fantastic buy for you.
