Why have we not just bought Benatia and Vidal for that sort of money? Really is a staggering fee. I do rate Di Maria very highly but it does not solve any of the issues with the squad. Bizarre.

Benatia seems like all window he was actually just looking for more money from Roma, but now Bayern have come in due to injuries and it's not surprising he favours a move to them over us.

Vidal who knows, maybe it's the knee that was being murmured about and we got cold feet not wanting to be burned again like with Hargreaves. I also think that really, LVG wants to splash the money on Strootman and will wait to see how he recovers from his injury.

From all the chat it seems that Blind is going to happen and then one other, which the journo's are saying they don't know who but the De Jong rumour mill is back in full force.

Yeah, Daniel Taylor said he heard (but not confirmed) it was £59.9m + £7m add-ons.

That really is an incredible price, but considering what some players cost I don't think it's that outrageous, Di Maria is one of the best players around and gives us something totally different. The only question is exactly where he'll play.

I didn't think the Ozil price (£42.5m) was crazy and I think Di Maria is a lot better.

I'd rather buy Vidal for £50m, but there's clearly some sort of issue with his knee or LvG doesn't want him.

Daley Blind is a good player who can shield the back four, and I don't think he'll cost loads, so that should provide a better balance in midfield.

If we want to compete with the likes of Chelsea and other big spending clubs (not saying we arent a big spending club), we have to keep making our mark by buying these players when then become available.

How many attacking midfielders have Chelsea bought over time when they didn't need them?

Not many... can't really think of any since ~2005.

Also, while Chelsea do compete for high-end signatures, it's generally done at market value. Apart from the terrible flop that is Torres, the most Chelsea have spent on a transfer is £32m - for Hazard and Costa. Fabregas was £27m, Schurrle was £18m etc.

If I were supporting Man U then I'd be concerned that dropping £60m+ would single you out as a team with money to burn on star players, even if they play in positions you're already stacked at. A kind of poor-man's galacticos...

That £60m would be better spent on, say, Khedira and Benatia. Maybe those two players aren't quite the superstars that Di Maria is, and maybe they don't make the big headlines that will excite Woodward, but they'd improve your squad far more. You might even have cash left over for a squad-level CB or FB.

Sometimes you need the headlines and excitement a signing makes as much as you need the actual player.

Utd are at a very low point right now and need a lift. Di Maria will lift the entire club and hopefully (from Utds point of view anyway, I hope he flops) will bring out better performances from others and create a bit of a fear factor.

Everybody knew Arsenal didn't need Ozil last season but when he signed Arsenal were at rock bottom, but the reaction from their fans when he signed was as if they had won the league and that optimism carried into the first few months of the season where they went on a great run. Henderson then ruined him and Arsenal folded :p

:p
Only Martinez is deluded enough to think that would break us into the top 4. We are playing for 7th.

I can't figure out whether you really have it in for Martinez or just loved Moyes.

Maybe Martinez is deluded but I'd rather have that than a manager that accepts mediocrity.
