So when RVP was excellent wide for Arsenal, he was a square peg in a round hole? When Rooney was brilliant wide left for Utd, same thing?
Because RVP is good upfront, it means he can't be good in another position and playing him in another position would be a player not comfortable? That argument stands up to any scrutiny except..... oh wait, several years ago when RVP was moved to be a lone striker from his wide position you would surely have said the same "he's great wide, why would you play him as a lone striker, he can't do it, square peg round hole and all that. Hmm, I sense a flaw in that argument.
Utd were also woeful in the 08/09 year where Berbatov played upfront and Rooney frequently played as a wide forward... you, wait, were the last team to reach 90 points in the league, won the title, got to a champs league final(where you got pretty easily beaten when you dropped Berbatov and played fairly differently to how you had all year)..... well because Utd had their best season in recent history that year, it's proof that system was awful, absolutely and that Rooney was horrendous in that system when played wide.
Utd scored less than most champions that year, conceded less and got more points than anyone has since. They were very well balanced, deadly on the counter and because they were built to counter they could sit back more and be more defensively solid.
You don't have the midfield to tika taka your way through stubborn opposition, you do have the offence to counter well, and that will be even more true with Falcao on board. Sitting deeper which helps protect you defensively and softens the impact of a crap midfield(as you had in 08/09) as they won't get caught out so often nor offer as much space. It also frees up your offence with more space in behind the opposition.
