No, just that they were improving year on year.

City (or anyone) backsliding epically will struggle to attract the biggest names without paying over the odds (which City did)

And they could afford stupid wages for Europes top mercenaries. United are a business project, City are a toy.

Utd arent going to struggle with wages either if they need to (although they dont NEED to spend huge amounts on a lot of merc's to get back into the top four)

However you or a lot of others on here want to continue to deny it, Utd are not typical - even now

Sorry, of course, Utd are already dead and gone lol

Might as well get ready for a relegation battle next season and give up. ;)

It's not hard to grasp, really (if people are struggling). We won't have our pick of the players but, we:

  • Are the biggest club in the country and in some respects, world
  • Have significant financial power, as much as anyone bar City and Chelsea
  • Will have one of the best managers around, and those who have played for him say he's incredible

Lastly, we don't need to sign 4 or 5 amazing world class players, a couple and then just very good players in the other positions we need, and we'll be able to mount a top 4 challenge with ease. If not better.

Even that is debatable (as the club cant count on the owner's personal finances with ease - although dodgy sponsorships will always look glaring) :)

I made this man utd prediction earlier re. transfers / team for next year... based on a lot of rumours / guess work.

------------------De Gea-----------------
Rafael----Smalling----Hummels-----Shaw
--------------Kroos-----Vidal-------------
---------------------Mata------------------
--------Reus-----------------Robben**-------
-----------------Van Persie---------------

subs: Januzay, Strootman, Jones, Evra, Fletcher, Valencia, Wellbeck

Sold: Cleverley, Young, Anderson, Hernandez, Nani, Kagawa, Rooney

Other possible signings: Cavani

**Robben for one or two years as he's 30 to be replaced by Ronaldo when he comes back

Feel free to come laugh at me at the start of the season....

LMAO...this cannot be serious. For a start you wont sell Rooney, if you wanted to, you would have done it last summer or this past Jan lol.

We went from 1st to 7th in the League, its not been a 4-5 year decline.

We picked completely the wrong manager and were punished hard for it. We are getting a world class manager in and will be buying top class players regardless of the costs involved.

Liverpool have managed to get back into the CL places and nearly win the league without CL football for the past few years.

I seriously have no idea why people think this is going to be a huge ask to be back in the CL next year.

It's not a huge ask to be back in the CL next year. If things go well for Utd, I wouldn't be wholly shocked to see them challenge for the title again next season.

On the other hand, I would also not be surprised to see them floundering in mid-table again this time next year. In short, I think that everything at the club is completely up in the air at present.

In other news, there are rumours on Twitter that we're bidding for Emre Can. Anyone seen much of him? He looked poor against Utd, but then again so did everyone. He's apparently highly rated.

Edit: If we get Can, Lallana, and Moreno I'll be pretty happy this transfer window. A right back, third choice striker, and centre back would be very handy, but bulking out our midfield has to be the priority.

Problem is you're going to have to offer stupid, stupid money to attract the players you want. They won't be all that interested in playing for Man Utd (without Ferguson it's just another big club), and with no European football to offer it's going to take a lot of money to tempt them, and as I've said, I can see a lot of players waiting to see what other signings Man Utd confirm before they commit - if they don't act fast it could be a busy (and desperate) August.

And I still don't believe the rumours of how much cash they've got to spend. I'll be staggered if they spend more than £100 in transfer fees this window.

We have Anderson,Nani,Buttner,Young,Bebe,Hernandez,Valencia,Kagawa possibly going out as transfers this season and if you total up fee and wage savings you could come to £100m i bet. Wage savings from Vidic,Rio,Evra,Giggs,Scholes as well come to £600k roughly per week And United are due to renew thier shirt sponsorship deal for ten years in the coming months for around £600m.

If the Glazers investment is threatened there is no shortage of cash from United itself to pay out £150m in player and agent fee's and use the £600k saved from our old retirement players to pay thier wages. We could buy Toni Kroos for £50m and give him £200k per week three times over quite easily and fall well within FFP.

punished to the tune of over £50m if last weeks telegraph is accurate. accounting for moyes' pay off, lost tv and league money and gate receipts.

league winnings have gone up due to the new tv deal (although obviously Utd would have gained even more had finished higher)

Given the added sponsorship deals etc the loss in earnings are unlikely to amount to that much

.

Not sure why you are including Scholes in that list - while he may have been paid a little for a coaching role (which he hasnt been doing for majority of the season, as he was spending time with his family) it would in all liklihood have been far less than what he was previously getting as a player.

The Moyes experiment will have cost us close to 100m by the time its all accounted for I reckon.

£30m+ from missing Cl
Xm for coming 7th in PL instead of top 4.
£27m felliani +wages for however long he is here for
~10m payoff for moyes

Then you have to take into account the inflated transfer fees and wages we may have to pay. The extra cost of getting in a top class manager when they have us over a barrel. The loss to the value of the club due to Moyes reign on the market value of the club has been.

Its a bit of a shame what has happened to United over the past 10 years. Without the Glazers and without Moyes, god knows how much money we would have.

There's far from any guarantee you'd have got CL football without the Moyes "experiment", though. 79 points is higher than any team has ever reached to get 4th before, and the current Utd team is weaker than those of any of the top 4. I appreciate the argument that last year Utd won the league comfortably, but City and Chelsea underperformed hideously, and Liverpool have come on leaps and bounds since then.

I agree that Moyes was not, in the end, the right choice, but to lay this season entirely at his door and the door of those who appointed him is not right.

We didn't miss out on CL football because it was the highest points total required for 4th place ever. We got 64 points because we kept losing to every man and his dog. You don't have to win the league but you do have to at least get in the top 4 after winning the season before. Even if City and Chelsea had not under-performed last season, we would still have won the league.

You win the league by beating as many teams as you can. Not by beating the best teams in the league in a few choice games.

I don't blame Moyes entirely. I probably apportion 60% of the blame at his door but the fact of the matter is that we had the title winning side and he took us to 7th while spending £27m on a complete flop and making us lose out on CL football.

When you have a drop in results like that without losing half your team the manager should be held mainly responsible. His job is to control the style and tactics of the team and to motivate them. He failed in every aspect.

Fair enough. As said in previous posts, I have no idea how you'll do next season, but if you end up in 7th again I wouldn't be totally shocked.

I don't know why we would. We don't have the 7th best squad in the league, we won the league with a good manager last year, we will buy top platers this summer and we will have a good manager again.

I don't expect to win the league but anything except top 4 will be as big a failure as Moyes (as long as we buy good players in the summer).
