Who in their right mind would pay £15 million? Be lucky to get 5.

Southampton, to replace Lallana after Pochettino goes, all the decent players follow and Moyes takes the reigns.

Seriously though, it would be hysterical if Moyes buys him again wherever he goes next :p

Every day, every blood day I ask myself how did the senior management allow Moyes to buy Fellaini for £27.5m, considering his recent buyout was a few £m lower. Why!? I don't think I will get over it any time soon, that should have been a gross misconduct.

The situation was pathetically desperate!

Hysterical for everyone except the unfortunate club :p

Part of LvG's appeal is that he works with players and gets the best out of them. In a squad with Rooney, rvp, mata, kagawa and januzaj in it, why would you want kroos to come in when lvg could get the best out of already good squad players

Surely defence, a defensive midfielder and toure-esque player are much more important. alternatively, Why spend £20-40m on an attacking player just to try and shove him in a different position?

That's a reasonable point, but unlike those players, Kroos has experience playing deeper in a central role (and so can Fabregas).

I don't think we really lack creativity though, we just need some solid midfielders, Strootman/Vidal would be ideal, or someone along those lines.

Van Gaal seems to have a clear list of players he wants, he doesn't seem to buy for the sake of it.

The question is then; are kroos/fabregas better as a destructive DM than, say, Matic?

I don't think so and nor do I think that either if those two are better at driving the team forward from deep like toure.

I don't know whether playing kroos/fabregas as quarterbacks like Gerrard would be better than having a dynamic deep lying toure type player though. In both situations a solid destroyer to play next to them is important. I think overall, for the pl, toure is more useful than a distributor.

How do we know that? A few days ago the same journos who are reporting that the deal was off were telling us that Kroos was on his list.

That's true, for all we know the journalists might all be guessing entirely.

Van Gaal was asked, though: 'Is Strootman on your list?' Van Gaal: 'That's something only I know.'

Implying there is a list, and I saw it mentioned elsewhere too.

I imagine, as a football man, he will have an idea of what players he'd like brought in.

All managers will have certain players they like working with, we see it all the time when a manager goes to one club and then tries to take players from his old club with him.

I think the issue for Van Gaal and Utd isn't so much the players Van Gaal knows and likes but the players at the club already. How long ago was Van Gaal sounded out about the Utd job and how closely has he been following them? Surely you can't draw up a clear plan of what you want to do without knowing what you've got to start with.

He was contacted immediately after David Moyes was fired, so he's not had that long. He can probably see for himself that there are glaring weaknesses in the side (from watching video replays of the matches this season, or whatever), and even more so now with our two most senior centre backs having gone.

Edit:

Graham Hunter is now claiming that Pep wants to keep Kroos, and we've been offered Schweinsteiger instead. Probably one of the most ideal players we could get, wanted him for years. I just can't see him leaving Bayern though.

How can people say there is no need for creativity? Before the last game of the season Manchester United's central midfielders completed ZERO throughballs and thier passing stats generally were woeful. Did you lot not watch the game where our forwards were deprived of the ball only for it to go back and sideways to Young and Valencia? Remember the 80 crosses in one match? At times is was being knocked about so much Rio would step up and hoof balls up to Rooney it was laughable how bad we were.

So why on earth would you buy two DM's? You need a worker and a creator not two pit horses. That has been part of the problem and what we are doing in the market is dipping in to adress those flaws. For instance up until Juan Mata joined us in January Patrice Evra was second to Rooney in our assists rating at 5. Yes that is how bad it was before Mata came and beat Evra to second or managed to tie with him.

A creator further back is an absolute minimum requirement.

It really depends on how you set up to play though. When it comes to creative players, Mata/Kagawa/Januzaj/Rooney are all able to play in the role(s) behind the striker and they can offer a lot. The issue is the supporting players behind them have been utter garbage so it hasn't worked very well, and then you've had people like Chris Smalling at right back, wasting attack opportunities on the overlap.

Without knowing Van Gaal's system in detail and how he wants to line up, it's difficult to speculate beyond "we need better quality in X position".

Central midfield is an obvious area that needs improvement but it's the likes of Jones, Smalling, Rafael etc, players/positions that aren't obviously needing improvement but equally aren't definitely going to be players Van Gaal will rate either.

I'm sure there will be a lot of ideas and plans that will change after the WC and Van Gaal's actually spent time with the squad and been able to properly assess them, assuming he wasn't sounded out months ago and done it already.

None of the team were performing under Moyes; it isn't an indication of poor players. Rooney, RVP, Kagawa, Janujaz(?), Mata can all pick passes.

Agreed. It would be beneficial to try and sign players beforehand though, especially if they might be in higher demand after the World Cup. There must be one or two targets at least.
